DS statement on Cummings is shameful

Basically I am sceptical about how terrible this could be to get for all of us - the mild illness stuff has been dropped as not helpful to the general lock us all up thing.

Regardless as a law abiding person I've stuck to the rules.

Which I thought meant you had to self isolate if you had symptoms and no, you couldn't go somewhere easier. If you had kids you all stayed in together, relied on deliveries or the local council support schemes and 111 if it was bad.

So I'm sickened by the knot tying in getting Cummings off the hook.

Number 10 issued the following statement: "Owing to his wife being infected with suspected coronavirus and the high likelihood that he would himself become unwell, it was essential for Dominic Cummings to ensure his young child could be properly cared for.
His sister and nieces had volunteered to help so he went to a house near to but separate from his extended family in case their help was needed. His sister shopped for the family and left everything outside. At no stage was he or his family spoken to by the police about this matter, as is being reported. His actions were in line with coronavirus guidelines. Mr Cummings believes he behaved reasonably and legally."

I haven’t read any of this. Is it actually true?

I often worry about what would happen to my kids (5 and 2) if DH and I both became unwell at the same time. I guess my in-laws would just need to take them 🤷🏻‍♀️

That said I’m sure he has the money and the means to deal with the childcare issue without travelling.

Total bollocks.

iVampire Sat 23-May-20 10:52:24

Everyone else in those circs was told to stay home and contact local volunteer services for assistance (see zillions of threads passim)

We’re either in this together or we’re not

YogaLite Sat 23-May-20 10:52:54

I hate the sly looking guy, can't believe no10 has defended him, hope this brings them both down.

GrimmsFairytales Sat 23-May-20 10:53:45

Absolute bollocks. angry

It is entirely mind blowing. I am a single parent and when I got what I assume was COVID-19 in March I just sucked it up and carried on looking after the children. They could have gone to their dad’s but they didn’t because I had the virus.

There is so much about this story that enraged me.

I am posting this in the hope that someone in this shambles of a government will take notice of the fact that we all know just how mendacious, incompetent and unpleasant they are. And that this won’t be forgotten. If we all just keep posting then perhaps they will realise that however much they bluster and get Laura K to cover for them the public see through their gaslighting and unpleasantness.

I haven’t heard this. I wouldn’t leave my kids with strangers.

Cummings is an arsehole though. I don’t meant to detract from that.

longwayoff Sat 23-May-20 10:55:25

There was a mumsnet thread commenting on his presence in the north at the time. BS to all of these excuses.

WhenSheWasBad Sat 23-May-20 10:57:05

Utterly appalling. Knowingly moving into an area with low levels of Covid (back then) when your household is infected.

CrowCat Sat 23-May-20 10:57:37

We are not, and have never been 'all in this together' as Neil Ferguson demonstrated last month.

SabrinaTheTeenageBitch Sat 23-May-20 10:58:54

My friend is a single parent and had what she suspected was coronavirus. She literally dragged herself through it because she didn't want to send her children to anyone

AuntImmortelle Sat 23-May-20 10:59:48

@WelcomeToTheNorth I think you have the wrong end of the stick here. You contact volunteers to get food and medicine for you. Not to look after your kids

As for Cummings: a truly odious piece of shit, quite frankly.

He has to go.

GreyGardens88 Sat 23-May-20 11:00:31

I hate the slimy bastard, this government can't get anything right, need overthrowing

SunbathingDragon Sat 23-May-20 11:02:20

Despite having never met him, I have a real dislike for Cummings.

If true, and due to my dislike of him I would prefer to think it wasn’t, I am not sure where he would stand with the rules. In all honesty, having the virus is so unpredictable that I wouldn’t want to take the risk of looking after a young child or children if I was also incapacitated and so was my partner. It’s probably covered by saying you can travel to care for vulnerable people.

A friend of mine was the same but her children were sent to family because she needed to go into hospital on two occasions. It’s not always as easy as dragging yourself through it.

LindainLockdown Sat 23-May-20 11:04:32

If only this could lead to his downfall. Unfortunately he will cling on like the slimiest limpet ever know to man.

MadameMarie Sat 23-May-20 11:05:08

Could be the beginning of the end for the Tories this after a long period of government, similar to the 90s when they kept shooting themselves in the foot with scandals.

Their polls are still good but wait till the fallout of the virus both in terms of economic damage and other scandals like care homes and so many avoidable deaths from bad decisions (too late to lockdown etc).

If they keep Cummings Boris will get battered for it. Lose him and he's lost his key ally and main advisor.

DuncinToffee Sat 23-May-20 11:07:10

How will they explain his wife's account of his illness?

He has to go but he won't

EvilPea Sat 23-May-20 11:08:28

I’d imagine with all the borrowing they’ve had to do (not criticising) they will gladly hand the keys to someone else to sort out

Humphriescushion Sat 23-May-20 11:11:46

The more i think about this the madder i get!

Gunpowder Sat 23-May-20 11:13:48

I am so, so cross about this. angry We have four young children including two year old twins. I wish I’d known childcare was an essential reason for travel when DH and I were both poorly at the same time with suspected Covid.

TheFallenMadonna Sat 23-May-20 11:14:49

The guidelines that said his wife should have stayed at home for 7 days, and he and his child for 14 days. Where is the caveat they are referring to?
