Anyone else doing the 2019 Yoga with Adriene 30 day programme?

The details are here

do.yogawithadriene.com/p/dedicate

It's free and the videos are posted on YT each day. You can sign up via the above link and you get a daily e-mail or via her YT channel.

I joined in for the first time in 2018 and loved it. The community of MNers to share experiences and provide encouragement kept me going to the end.

And I'm ...err ..not young! I'd only done a couple of yoga classes before but have continued an ad hoc basis since. I remember stiffly lowering myself to the floor on day 1 and feeling extraordinarily flexible about 14 days later. I'm hoping I can recover some of that this year!

Day 1 done and I really needed that. I found sitting for so long at the start hard as I haven't done any exercise for months but by the end I was so pleased to have started it. Despite being interrupted half way through because I forgot I was meant to be giving DD1 (16) a lift with her friends Confused thankfully DH stepped in so I could continue.

NoLeslie · 02/01/2019 12:05

Another one here who has managed today's Grin - overnight guests meant I had to do it in bedroom and felt v self conscious that DH was dozing away next to me. I really need privacy for yoga I think.

DeadBod · 02/01/2019 12:14

I missed the start yesterday with one thing and another so was looking for day 2. I've just realised that it's actually day 1 today although it's the 2nd. It doesn't take much to confuse me Confused

calamariqueen · 02/01/2019 12:21

I tried during DD's nap time, spent the first few minutes of the video clearing space in the plastic ball pit that is my sitting room floor. Wow my planks are going to take some work Confused then got a delivery, dog barked, baby work up & it all came to a rather abrupt end!! But I got through it & feel great for doing so 🎉

Clankboing · 02/01/2019 13:56

I am finding it virtually impossible to cross my legs for so long! Is this a problem?

jamaisjedors · 02/01/2019 14:01

@qumquat me too - and am delighted to have the yoga to look forward to each day.

@Clankboing - do you use a block or a blanket to sit on? I do, despite several years of yoga, and my teacher does too sometimes. It helps with the cross legged thing.

Also, the pace will pick up soon so make the most of sitting, I find Adrienne does quite a lot of chat/waffle in the early videos which is great to make sure you get the right position etc.

Espoleta · 02/01/2019 14:10

Just finished up today. It was more stop start than I would of liked as DD cried multiple times through the session but I made it. Tougher than I thought mentally.

Marylou2 · 02/01/2019 14:20

I’m in. I started Yoga last year and it’s the only exercise/ resolution I’ve ever kept to. Going to do it as soon as I’ve taken the decorations down.

PollyFlinderz · 02/01/2019 14:36

Day 1.

this is something I'll only be able to do in the evening due to the time difference where I live but Im ok with that and my plan is a 5000 step walk in the morning followed by a swim and the yoga in the evening.

So my feedback -

Todays yoga left me out of breath but I guess thats good.

I also got cramp in my toes whilst walking in to the downward dog.

I have no idea what she means by no creases in your neck and how to get the long back as I can't get past trying to work out 'no creases in my neck'.

Something about outward rotating your shoulders was also a mystery.

My hips went into spasm about 4 minutes in at the beginning so I just put my legs out in front of me and concentrated on breathing.

I found the baby position then lying flat out on the mat the best thing ever and Im pleasantly surprised at how good it felt and how much I enjoyed recovering in those positions.

I do wonder though if it would be beneficial to go watch the video again tonight in order to clear up some of the mysteries or if I'd put myself off by doing that and all I should do is tune in tomorrow and all the days after sure in the knowledge it will make sense quite soon.

AugustRose · 02/01/2019 14:53

polly for your neck she just means look straight down at the floor, don't look under you or forward. And to rotate the shoulders out in downward dog, if you have your hands straight out in front, slightly wider than your shoulders, turn you arms so your inside elbow creases face towards the front of you mat, as much as possible without hurting - this turns the shoulders out away from you ears.

It took me a good 7/10 days to work out my positions and breathing when I first started with Adriene. She has a series called Foundations of Yoga which is good at explaining each position in more detail - I really should have done that first but I caught up eventually.

clank I too sat up on a block this time as I was struggling to sit for so long.

Clankboing · 02/01/2019 15:21

Yes I'll get a blanket next time. Ridiculously I managed the rest ok - it was the sitting crossed legs that killed me.

floribunda18 · 02/01/2019 15:25

What time does the video go live on YouTube? I'm not quite into the routine yet, will do Day 2 this evening but would quite like to do it in real time if possible. It seemed to come up about 6am UK time, is that right?

Happyinheels · 02/01/2019 15:37

Ooo fab! Count me in! I did an Ashtanga Yoga class for about 6months as I struggle with a bad back. Loved it! Was somewhat surprised at the intensity of the workout.
Need motivation to take it back up so this is perfect thanks!

LadyLance · 02/01/2019 15:53

I just came across this today, and had a go at the first video, which was great. I'm reasonably fit (although have let things slide the last few months but not at all flexible). I really enjoyed it, so I'm going to try and keep up with the series if I can!

Some of the positions were hard work, though! They'd feel easy to get into, and then she'd just have you hold it and hold it while she was talking- it's quite a good tactic actually, as if I was reading instructions like "hold downwards facing dog for 2 minutes" I'd think no chance, but with her talking you through it gets a bit easier.

2019Reasons · 02/01/2019 15:55

I’m doing this, but stating tomorrow so will be a day behind. This is so I can do it at 5.30am before work some days (it doesn’t upload until 6am UK time I think?).

Looking forward to it. Feeling bloated and creaky after Christmas!

Namechangedtoprotect · 02/01/2019 16:06

So today I tried this for the first time. I have never done yoga before and am very unfit, about 2 stone over weight. I had to do it in 3 parts as I am unfit but I did it. Dh just said keep going and do what you can. I guess this is the first step. I also took some photos of my fat tummy to compare with at a later date

mynameiscalypso · 02/01/2019 16:22

Day 1 done here too; found the 50 mins went by pretty fast. I made some modifications for being pregnant (mainly in the transitions to protect my core and skipping the twists at the end) but it was really nice to just sit for a while and focus on breathing!

Gumpendorf · 02/01/2019 17:36

Day 1 done here too. Yes, yes to the discomfort in the hips from sitting crossed legs for so long. I kept having to straighten my legs for relief. Shock

After that it was ok - I'm rusty but in a better state than a year ago so I see that as progress! Onwards....

Redpriestandmozart · 02/01/2019 18:06

Crossed leg is my favourite position, it's the rest I am worried about. I'll let my dinner settle, have a nice bath and get stuck into it about 9pm. Reading all the posts today has really motivated me.

daisychain01 · 02/01/2019 18:26

Prolly if you are new to the yoga practice, don't be concerned if things don't immediately make sense, they take time to

For ex: the neck wrinkle comment Adrienne made means to visualise your head being balanced, chin not lifted or head back, nor head tilted to low, so it's a neutral position, which means your neck skin is "smooth" front and back, not wrinkled.

A lot of her words are descriptive and need to be visualised as you get more into the practice.

There's no harm in rerunning the video as there is a lot of information to take in. Main thing is don't worry about being perfect, it will all come in time. In fact it takes a lifetime Smile

I found Day 1 quite floaty, timeless (I don't know where 50 mins went!!) and positive, the start of the journey. Benji was such a good boy, he knows the moves to take. The room is a lot more open this series, with the big windows.

daisychain01 · 02/01/2019 18:26

Sorry For the typo Polly

SlantyBaws · 02/01/2019 18:30

Day one done here too. Lovely gentle practice and I loved watching Benji mooching about at the big window Smile

Karenspolos · 02/01/2019 18:45

Day 1 done. Took me right away from what had been worrying me. Star

noimnottryingforagirl · 02/01/2019 19:02

Day 1 done numbness in foot from sitting cross legged for so long! But done! 29 to go Smile
