Dedicate: 30 days of Yoga with Adriene

Anyone else doing the 2019 Yoga with Adriene 30 day programme?

The details are here

do.yogawithadriene.com/p/dedicate

It's free and the videos are posted on YT each day. You can sign up via the above link and you get a daily e-mail or via her YT channel.

I joined in for the first time in 2018 and loved it. The community of MNers to share experiences and provide encouragement kept me going to the end.

And I'm ...err ..not young! I'd only done a couple of yoga classes before but have continued an ad hoc basis since. I remember stiffly lowering myself to the floor on day 1 and feeling extraordinarily flexible about 14 days later. I'm hoping I can recover some of that this year!

I really wasn't in the mood this morning, too tired and dizzy but I did it and even added a short resistance band session to the end. Glad I read about the hip dips first, they are not my best move!

I am going to try and follow her monthly calendars from February as they have quite a good variety of sessions in them. I usually do other exercise but it takes me until March/April to get into it as I need the hope of spring to lift me out of my winter blues - I blame my very cold house.

Thanks for the warning about the hip dips - definitely not my favourite way to end a practice!

whitershadeofpale · 16/01/2019 11:31

I failed in my goal of waking up early to do today's session as I'm out tonight (we'll I woke up, pushed the alarm back and went back to sleep).

I'll try and do it when I get in as it's fairly short.

quirkychick · 16/01/2019 11:53

Last year's hip dips were with an ordinary (on hands) plank, a warning to anyone with lower back issues, they are really challenging on your lower back. Forearm ones are a good modification.

This year is good and varied, I agree. Even though I do daily yoga, the slower ones are still challenging with lots of holding a pose and getting you to focus on alignment and position. Also, I can imagine I'm in that gorgeous yoga studio with that lake view, not my sitting room before the sun has even come up.

After January, I usually do a mixture of Adriene, sun salutations and I also really like Shiva Rea's vinyasa flow yoga (I think her 20mins Daily Energy flows are on YouTube). Depends on what I feel like. I often redo one of Adriene's 30 days at some point in the year. Last year I was recovering from flu and injury and redid the Revolution in September and enjoyed it so much more (not the hip dips, I don't think I'll ever enjoy the hip dips).

I’m so grateful it was a short session today. I meant to do it this morning but had an early start at work and had forgotten that I’m in a different time zone this week so it didn’t release until 7am here. It’ll be ok for the rest of the week, luckily today I had a slot I could fit it in.

My first hip dips were ok, the last two were completely ungainly! I’ve been standing a lot today so it was great to stretch my back out with the twists and cat cow.

Habadabadoo · 16/01/2019 17:18

Just finished today's session. My dog went crazy trying to kiss me when I was doing the lions breathe!
Interesting to read what people will be doing in Feb. I want to continue some yoga but really need to throw in a few aerobic sessions a week to get my heart rate going faster. My Fitbit shows yoga doesn't do that.

Spudlet · 16/01/2019 20:40

Up to date now, ran days 11 and 15 together. Oof, those hip dips... was not feeling the yogic grace and oneness with those Blush

Gumpendorf · 16/01/2019 21:04

Day 15! We're halfway through, folks 😀

I liked the workout. It was short and those hipdips. I am clumsy at the best of times, and in the evening I seem to have much less grace. I could almost hear my bones grind as I dipped collapsed. I need to study the move more closely but there is something about the way she does hipdips that makes me feel I want to master them.

I'm really enjoying this year's programme. I agree she seems on top of her game this year.

Btw I think the studio is being rented for the video. She mentioned in an introductory video that she was having work done at her house, so it would be a new venue. It is such a gorgeous place and the view is a tonic.

Enjoyed today although I find hip dips quite difficult on forearms - my middle seems to just collapse!

noodlezoodle · 16/01/2019 23:59

Although I managed the hip dips, I'm not sure I quite got the hang of them. Need to rewatch that bit a few times I think! This is where it's harder to do yoga at home than in a purpose built studio - not that I like watching myself huff and puff around in the studio mirrors, but it is a lot easier to see what your alignment is like.

whitershadeofpale · 17/01/2019 00:19

Day 15 done! Nearly skipped a day as I don’t get home until 11 but DP text me and asked if I wanted a cup of tea when I got in or if I was doing my yoga first. It just made me realise how engrained in my daily routine it’s become that even he recognises it and I didn’t want to let it slip for the sake of 17 mins.

Found the practice good although I only managed half of the hip dips and couldn’t turn my right wrist all the way back without it hurting so it was at a slight angle. Did anyone else have this?

chutneypig · 17/01/2019 06:38

Day 16 done - I was poised waiting for the email. Very gentle practice today, lots of massage, stretching with some bridges thrown in to feel like you’ve worked too. I feel set for the day now, just as well as there wouldn’t have been a chance of doing it later on!

quirkychick · 17/01/2019 07:38

Day 16 done here too. I agree it's a gentle one today. For those (like me) with a tight lower back, the bridges are great. A good tip from another Adriene video, is to put a block under your lower back in bridge for an extra stretch.

I'm sure she said it wasn't her yoga studio. It's gorgeous, though.

My thighs feel it today. Could be the extra walking or the yoga...

Day 16 done and it is very gentle so I added the sun salutation to the end again.

I remember this from the other times I have done the 30 days, when I get to the middle I feel I need a bit more. For me 35/40 mins is a good time and anything shorter just isn't enough. And that's the benefit of home practice and Adriene in particular as she has so many videos to add or change when you want.

BerylStreep · 17/01/2019 13:40

14 and 15 done!

I wonder does she pre-record all of the sessions in one go?

There would be about 75 in a year, so that would be 20 days' filming at a rate of 3 or 4 a day.

I have been so down and so ill past few days but now I am feeling a bit better am gonna resume nightly sessions and plug into Day 16, good to hear it’s gentle. I need gentle.

Ulysses · 17/01/2019 17:45

I'm just checking in here to find out from you guys how Day 16 as my back is still giving me problems. It sounds it will be a good one though and I will do it later tonight once my dinner has settled. I am hoping to get up early enough tomorrow do it first thing as I spend my time fretting about getting it done. I have managed it daily for the past 10 days or so though, and am determined to keep it going.

cheminotte · 17/01/2019 18:41

Up to day 12 here but slight twinges in my back so wondered if I stretched something. I’d rather be a Swan than a pigeon (same thing obvs)and thought doing it upside down was harder than right way up.

whitershadeofpale · 17/01/2019 19:57

Day 16 finished. A really nice and peaceful practice today. Just what I needed as feeling a bit under the weather.

Gumpendorf · 17/01/2019 20:32

Day 16 was just what I needed especially the crescent stretches at the end. I could have stayed in that position for a while. I was feeling 'a bit' tense but now feel more spaced. And I'm thrilled I've got to Day 16 on day 16. Smile
