Dedicate: 30 days of Yoga with Adriene

Anyone else doing the 2019 Yoga with Adriene 30 day programme?

The details are here

do.yogawithadriene.com/p/dedicate

It's free and the videos are posted on YT each day. You can sign up via the above link and you get a daily e-mail or via her YT channel.

I joined in for the first time in 2018 and loved it. The community of MNers to share experiences and provide encouragement kept me going to the end.

And I'm ...err ..not young! I'd only done a couple of yoga classes before but have continued an ad hoc basis since. I remember stiffly lowering myself to the floor on day 1 and feeling extraordinarily flexible about 14 days later. I'm hoping I can recover some of that this year!

Day 11 done. Really enjoyed today, balance was better than I expected though I can’t do crow at all, I do feel that more weight is going through my arms arms core now though.

I’m going to an hour long yoga class tomorrow but am planning on still doing Adriene’s since it’s only short.

daisychain01 · 12/01/2019 20:04

I've noted Days 11 and 10 as being ones to rerun a number of times after this series has finished.

I'm a self-professed useless Crow. I can just about get one foot off the mat, but never feel like it's doing me any good, whereas give me a good warrior variation or triconasana (triangle) and I feel it's within my capabilities and I enjoy it. Crow just leaves me discontent!

FuzzyShadowChatter · 12/01/2019 20:35

I ended up with really bad pain in the arch of my foot in some places and had to pause more than I would like, but made it through. My Crow attempt was more like a bad frog hop, but it was more than I was expecting after how wobbly and achey I was through some of the challenges on one leg or lunges.

eurochick · 12/01/2019 22:12

I've just done a catch up session of 9 and 10 together. I really liked them, although they are probably not the best ones to do before bed. I found the floor pose with the arm stretch really tough - I've had loads of physio for tightness in my neck and shoulders (too many years in a stressful desk job). I felt like my shoulder was going to pop out of its socket!

noodlezoodle · 13/01/2019 00:09

So far I've done everything on the 'right' day but I'm going to defer day 11 to tomorrow and do 11 and 12 together. I went to my first spin class in a couple of months this morning and can hardly move, so am not feeling like a lot of one legged balances are on the cards!

Ulysses · 13/01/2019 08:44

I was 3 quarters of the way through day 12 and I've done something to my lower back. It's so painful, even sitting down. I think something just snapped. I hope it corrects itself quickly but I may need a trip to the docs.

Habadabadoo · 13/01/2019 09:15

Oh no @Ulysses that's a shame. Was it an awkward pose?

carrie74 · 13/01/2019 09:16

I'm a bit behind, haven't managed Day 8 yet, but might skip it altogether, as I'm less keen on the meditate-y ones. Just did Day 10, and will hopefully do Day 11 later this afternoon. I find yoga in the morning so much harder, my muscles are just too cold and stiff, and I find myself huffing and puffing much more.

Looking forward to crow though, sometimes I can totally nail it, others...not so much 😁, but I enjoy it as a pose.

I have to be really mindful of my lower back, and find chair pose can be quite painful, but I find really strengthening my core, sucking naval up towards my back while in the pose really helps give that support, if that helps anyone else.

carrie74 · 13/01/2019 09:17

Oh no Ulysses, just seen your post after I posted mine. Take it easy, hope it's not painful for too long x

quirkychick · 13/01/2019 09:35

Ulysses hope you feel better soon. Lower back pain is horrible. Those forward bends with legs crossed are quite challenging on hamstrings and lower back.

I have done Day 11 & 12 this morning. My usual yoga pattern is a 20-25min practice in the mornings and a longer session on Sundays, so it's just the old routine. I haven't done many standing balances for a while, I was ok, but my left leg felt it a bit by the end. I did the forward fold pigeon, but used a foam block under my bum, so my back leg is slightly bent.

carrie74 I can do crow too Grin. Today, I managed to lift both feet off for 4-5secs and I haven't done it for a while, so very pleased with that. Disclaimer, I've been doing yoga daily for 3yrs now and Adriene puts crow in her 30 days quite a bit. There are plenty of things I can't do, though.

@FuzzyShadowChatter

I ended up with really bad pain in the arch of my foot in some places and had to pause more than I would like, but made it through.

Adrienne has a great one for feet which might help stretch those arches:

Missed yesterday with being really busy and then out for a friend's birthday so I'm going to do day 11 in a minute and depending how that goes, day 12 straight after or.later on today.
I'm definitely toning up in my shoulders and my DH says my stomach looks flatter, but I'm a bit disappointed to find I've put nearly 2lb on since I started 🤔
I'm missing out some of my usual exercise to do this (a couple of Zumba classes and a sort of yoga/tai chi/toning class) so that's maybe why. I'm a bit disappointed though.

Redpriestandmozart · 13/01/2019 10:16

I did day 11 last night, I loved this one too but was unable to do any of the one-legged stuff but enjoyed it never the less. I have MS and terrible balance, I'm going to start a new thread for tips and advice on doing yoga with MS.

Gumpendorf · 13/01/2019 10:18

sucking naval up towards my back while in the pose really helps give that support, if that helps anyone else.

Really good advice carrie74. My Physio teaches the same in Pilates. It helps hugely.

Ulysses - that sounds painful. I hope you feel more comfortable soon. Do take care. ThanksThanks

I did Day 11 yesterday evening before bed. A risk for me as I've said before, but I really enjoyed it even though my balance is crap (even defying my Pilates teachers best efforts) and the best thing was I slept really well. I even tried the crow and did a little hop. Last year it just looked like magic and I sat it out. This year I'm thinking it might be something to work towards. Progress can sometimes be slow but it's satisfying.

I didn't do Day 11 as I went to a yoga class in the morning and then had other stuff to do. I'll do 11 and 12 together after I've been for a run today.

@letthemeatcake I have put on a couple of Honda since starting too!
Is it that yoga isn't actually good for weight loss as not burning as many calories as other exercise like Zumba?

Coffeecoffeebuzzbuzzbuzz · 13/01/2019 11:43

Thanks for this thread- I have done a few of her videos previously but didn’t know about the 30 days so have started yesterday (well behind the rest of you I know) but will post on here if it’s ok and read along just to keep me motivated?

FuzzyShadowChatter · 13/01/2019 12:02

IfyouseeRitaMoreno Thank you for that recommendation, I'm going to have a look at that later Smile

Coffeecoffeebuzzbuzzbuzz Welcome, we're all doing it at our own pace and has been such a lovely thread so far. I hope you enjoy it.

Day 12 done, very relaxed compared to yesterday. Struggled a bit with fire hydranty stuff (I found it was one side giving me trouble the first time around low and the other side was doing it when it was higher because my body wanted to be complicated today Grin ). Really enjoyed it.

Habadabadoo · 13/01/2019 12:07

Day 12 in the books . Enjoyed it again.
Welcome @Coffeecoffeebuzzbuzzbuzz hopefully this thread will help keep you going. It certainly has helped me to stick to it Smile

AugustRose · 13/01/2019 12:52

Ulysses I hope the back pain eases soon, it sounds similar to what I get a couple of times a year, if I've been lifting or twisting. It normally clears in a few days if I am careful about how I do things and I hope this is the same for you.

Mrsr8 When I first started my breathing was terrible, I would be so unco-ordinated I made myself feel dizzy. It took a while to get the breathing and movement together. If it helps just slow to your own pace or miss out some moves so you don't feel like you have to be doing exactly what Adriene is, or take a rest to catch your breath.

Welcome to the group Coffeecoffeebuzzbuzzbuzz

Day 12 done, it was enjoyable enough but I felt like I needed a bit more today so added one of Adriene's older sun salutations as it's only 10 minutes and gets the heart going with constant movement. It's a good one for the morning or if you don't have a lot of time.

coffeecow · 13/01/2019 12:59

Enjoyed yesterdays but I can never master crow no matter how many times I've tried it over the years! It hurts my arms most of all, where my knees are digging in?

Looking forward to todays, got a food shop to conquer first!

quirkychick · 13/01/2019 13:15

Mrsr8 with all of that going on, you sound as if you are doing wonderfully!

Whoever said about the feet, I think doing yoga really makes your feet more flexible and strong. You notice it too! I like her feet dvd, it's helpful.

Ietthemeatcake · 13/01/2019 13:54

@Habadabado great typo - I hope you haven't put on a couple of Hondas 🤣
Day 11 and 12 done - back on track!

itssquidstella · 13/01/2019 15:13

@coffeecow my arms often hurt from my knees digging in in crow too. It doesn't matter how high I get hem (and I'm pretty strong now and can get them up to my armpits), it's so painful I end up compromising on the pose! Not sure what the solution is...
