Dedicate: 30 days of Yoga with Adriene

Gumpendorf · 30/12/2018 11:00

Anyone else doing the 2019 Yoga with Adriene 30 day programme?

The details are here

do.yogawithadriene.com/p/dedicate

It's free and the videos are posted on YT each day. You can sign up via the above link and you get a daily e-mail or via her YT channel.

I joined in for the first time in 2018 and loved it. The community of MNers to share experiences and provide encouragement kept me going to the end.

And I'm ...err ..not young! I'd only done a couple of yoga classes before but have continued an ad hoc basis since. I remember stiffly lowering myself to the floor on day 1 and feeling extraordinarily flexible about 14 days later. I'm hoping I can recover some of that this year!

Agreed, day 6 I is one that I definitely felt is worth coming back to.

FuzzyShadowChatter · 07/01/2019 14:55

After yesterday's hectic day, I did Day 5 and 6 today as Monday is my quiet day so really the only time I'll have to catch up. Knees and wrists are still struggling, but getting and I did find the sitting back with the toes down way harder than I thought it was going to be & really appreciated her discussing those issues.

I found 5 more difficult than 6 - legs were a bit wobbly afterward the first one as I went to make lunch and do a few things before doing 6 which after a bit intense at first, quite a bit was laying down (my younger daughter joined me for that bit, she liked the hugging herself) - but I think that might be individual.

FuzzyShadowChatter · 07/01/2019 14:57

My post has just reminded me - right after I hit post of course - she said something about taking pressure off the back of the palm during tabletop and similar moves, but I'm really struggling to move the pressure elsewhere on my hands. Her comment about index finger and thumb helped a bit but I was wondering if anyone have any tips for that?

DistanceCall · 07/01/2019 15:30

@FuzzyShadowChatter, I find these help (Adriene mentions them regularly):

  • Clawing through all your fingers (even curving them slightly if you need to).
  • Remembering to rotate your forearms externally, so the inside of your elbows is facing forwards.
  • Focusing on the area between index and thumb.

In my experience, it does get better with practice.

Apologies in advance I'm going have a little moan. First day of term and school just got the call today we are having Ofsted tomorrow. I know yoga may well help me but also under a lot of pressure to work all hours tonight. I am going to try and squeeze in at least a 15 minute practice. Wish me luck!

qumquat even if you don't do the 30 day ones, Adriene has lots of short practices including ones for stress/anxiety. Best of luck with the Ofsted visit. Teacher here too.

coffeecow · 07/01/2019 17:28

Day 6 done. I always overthink core day! It was fine in the end!

FranKubelik · 07/01/2019 18:12

Day 6 done. Enjoyed that and agree that it's one I'll come back to.

FiveNightsAtMummys · 07/01/2019 18:38

Well I did 6 aswell as 5 and I can really it now I have the shakes.

cheminotte · 07/01/2019 18:47

I did day 4 this morning and day 5 this afternoon. Have now got a really painful neck now and wonder if it was from the crunches that weren’t supposed to be crunches. I always struggle to not tense my neck.

Normal life resumes tomorrow with all adults and children back at work / school. Am considering setting the alarm as it’s that or do it at 9pm tomorrow.

PollyFlinderz · 07/01/2019 18:56

Ive had to give up. I have 3 slipped discs in my neck and yesterday I lost the feeling in two of the fingers in my right hand. My right upper arm is also extremely painful. I don't want to say I was expecting it because I was quietly hoping some treatment I had recently would have worked to the extent I could get back to exercise but sadly anything that involves taking my weight on my arm is just not possible. Its not all bad news for me though because Ive been in touch with a new yoga studio a few minutes from my house and on Thursday Im going to join their stretching class for older people/people who have injuries. The teacher was very nice and when I said its obvious I can't do anything like down dog she said don't worry there's plenty other things you can do.

Its only a year ago when I was competing in a crossfit masters and doing really well but a fall on a cruise ship when stone cold sober really has put paid to a lot.

Onward and Upward Smile

Samb79 · 07/01/2019 19:00

@qumquat teacher here too, you poor thing. Hope ofsted goes ok and you get an ok time of it.
I’d recommend that if you do anything at all, do her bedtime yoga, you’re going to need to be rested! X

BonBonVoyage · 07/01/2019 19:01

Yikes day 6 was tough. But I sat in my car and ate a whole bar of dark chocolate today so I reckon I needed something to balance that out Blush

I loved day 5 though

Oh polly, that is rubbish. Hope your new class is good though. Maybe in time your new teacher can show you how to modify the routines so you can practice at home as well if you want to?

Good luck Qumquat - what a start to the year! Confused

noodlezoodle · 07/01/2019 19:35

That was hard and I already know I'll be feeling it tomorrow. Will definitely come back to this one though because my core clearly needs a lot more work! I couldn't push up into a one legged hover at all, had to do a three-legged dog and then drop my knee. Very strange, so I will keep at it until I can do it!

whitershadeofpale · 07/01/2019 20:14

Day 6 done. I found it really hard but like others I know I’ll come back to it as I could really feel it working. I couldn’t manage the one leg knee raises at all but just lifted as much as I can manage. It’s something to work towards.

itssquidstella · 07/01/2019 20:30

I enjoyed the three-legged hovers into down dog - I felt like my legs were really engaged. That was an enjoyable practice: not too tricky, but I have a reasonably strong core so I wasn't expecting it to be (my back is my weak spot so I'm hoping to strengthen it over the course of this month!). Looking forward to a shorter video tomorrow as I'm back at work.

Mailfuckoff · 07/01/2019 20:34

That was hard and I think my abs are going to join my shoulders, neck and legs in hurting tomorrow. But it's little steps to a better body and that's keeping me going

calamariqueen · 07/01/2019 20:34

I had a double healthy new year fail yesterday- too hungover to do yoga Confused well I missed it! I've just done day 5 & I've got an actual real life class tomorrow night so guess I'll be 2 days behind after that!! I'm very much ok with it though. I've done more yoga this last week than in the last 6 months & I'm already feeling less tightness 👍🏼

KickBishopBrennanUpTheArse · 07/01/2019 20:37

Day 6 "in the books" Grin

I found the hover / down dog move quite easy. Not sure I would have done a week ago.

I struggled with the lift ups and holding my legs in the air, even though I've done it in pilates. Mind you I always struggle with them there too. That would be a really good routine to do twice a week in between pilates classes.

I hope she goes easy on the core tomorrow. I think I will be sore.

Good luck Qumquat. What a horrible start to the term. Flowers

VioletCharlotte · 07/01/2019 20:37

I got home late from work and was starving so ate dinner and now too full to do yoga! Will do Day 6 tomorrow morning and day 7 in the evening.

daisychain01 · 07/01/2019 20:39

Day 6 some of it torture (the crunches), some of it lovely (oblique side stretches at the end felt nice and balancing after all the centre core work) and some of it oooo that's different! (hover to down dog).

I've read everyone's comments and it sounds like we all got something good from it today, albeit a tough session (core always is!)

Hope you're OK polly did you mean you had to stop just today? Or the rest of the series? Sad hope your poor neck is OK, can you put a warmed wheat pillow on it?

noodle I'm definitely going to feel it tomorrow! I may need a hot water bottle lol.

Hope you're fully recovered from your cold Gumpendorf

We've earned our 17 min day 7 tomorrow xx

LadyLance · 07/01/2019 21:01

I found elements of that pretty hard, especially the sort of twisting crunches- I think I will save those for when I especially want to torture myself.

I was pleased with myself for getting my knee off the floor in the three legged poses although I couldn't quite manage to transfer directly into three legged downward dog!

But I am proud of myself for having done it and stuck with it- I will definitely need the shorter session tomorrow though!
