World Cup 2026

AIBU to wonder why the UK gets 4 teams in the World Cup, whereas France only gets one.

Why don't we play as UK in the World Cup? Why do we get 4 teams when everyone else gets just the one? It would bring an end to anyone but England sentiment.

i was being facetious!

Does everything have to be explicitly marked as lighthearted on here now?

Sorry. Blush Sometimes when something is said via text/online, you can't tell if people are being serious or not. With the things the OP has been coming out with, it was not too much of a stretch to think you may be serious! 😬😁

Because Scotland is a county and you can stick your team UK .

You mean 'country?'

I’m a huge football fan (Everton ST holder for my sins!), but I beg to disagree re the PL being the best league in the world. It’s certainly the best promoted/marketed/monetised and the richest/most lucrative, especially for a select few clubs, players and their agents. But in my opinion, the general quality of the football on display week after week from most teams (and I very sadly include my own here), is utter garbage.

Hence why, when you get a top notch coach like Pep Guardiola coming into a Club that’s financially backed by sovereign wealth (even if they won’t admit it), being handed a huge budget and given carte blanche to curate a team packed full of world class talent, they go on to dominate the league year after year for the best part of a decade, whilst playing a standard and style of football far superior to that on offer from their competitors.

Are you also not aware that La Liga and The Bundesleague, the Italian league, Scottish football etc. Etc etc. are dominated by the same clubs year in year out....

Whereas the Premiership isn't.... arsenal this year Liverpool previously, previously Man City......

Tell me you know NOTHING about football 😂😂

Livelovebehappy · 12/06/2026 23:43

Exactly. Can you imagine a situation where Scottish and English fans would be standing next to each other cheering the same team? It would feel…..wrong..

Why? The "anyone but England" is deeply cringe making.

@Zov "I don't understand why they say what they do about England (ie; 'ANYone can win, as long as it's not England!!!')"

1707 may illuminate, it is deep seated tbh. 🦄 😊

That's cringe making too.

I will concede that Scotland might be a separate country, but Wales isn't.

😂

Tell that to the Welsh.

Clueless @TheKittenswithMittens you have to be pretending, no one is this 😒 are they.....

Scotland is not a region. It is a country.

Umm...yes...it is as I said one of the nations of the UK with its own football association recognised by FIFA, which is why it can enter a team in the World Cup. Unlike Normandy, or Sicily which are regions of other countries that the OP was incorrectly suggesting are analagous.

Blushingm · Yesterday 00:26

TheKittenswithMittens · 12/06/2026 21:59

Why do we go to the Olympics as Team GB and not England, Scotland, Wales, and NI?

Commonwealth games we are separate. Rugby World Cup and 6 nations we are separate.

The different nations have their own parliament and taxes too

The @TheKittenswithMittens needs to check out countries of the would. Help explain the difference between countries and regions in a country. Most primary school children understand what an actual country is

Bridesmaidorexfriend · Yesterday 00:29

I have no problem with them being separate as I think each country has its own national identity, but you’re not wrong, we see them as separate countries but technically they’re not considered seperate countries globally, on the list of all the countries in their own right, we are collectively the UK

Tony Doyle, from England got Bronze the individual pursuit. The English team, all me took bronze in the team pursuit. There were no women competing.

Women made their Commonwealth Games cycling debut eight years later, at the 1986 Games in Edinburgh.

So, could you please answer the point several PPs have raised - there were no women's cycling teams competing in Edmonton in 1978, from any country, so how can you deny that you are lying? It would be a very weird thing to be mistaken about. Also, if you didn't receive the medal, as you say, who does the one in the photo belong to? Clarification is required if you don't want to be branded a liar.
Also not winning a commonwealth games medal, not swimming the Channel and not climbing Everest doesn't make you any more of a somebody than anyone else.

What fact? That the separatist movement is embarrassingly full of petty, narrow. minded nationalists? Scottish nationalism is as bad as any other type.

gillefc82 · Yesterday 00:43

Explain why then:

182 premier league players
36 from championship

So 218 from English football

95 Bundesleague players

86 La Leagua from spain

Because as I said, the PL is incredibly well marketed. They have negotiated some of the most lucrative TV rights globally. Take just the US broadcasters as an example:

NBC is paying the PL $433 million per year for six years ($2.6 billion throughout the deal) for US broadcasting rights.

Compare that to

  • ESPN - $175 million annually for LaLiga
  • CBS - $75m annually for 3 years up to 2023/24 for Serie A
  • a previous deal between ESPN and the Bundesliga at $30m per year.

The gap is stark. And money follows money. Player agents will encourage the players the represent to make the move to the PL as that will guarantee them a big fat bonus. When the big names come, the endorsements and sponsors follow. It becomes a never ending cycle.

I’m not disputing the PL is well represented at the World Cup and that amongst that contingent there aren’t some amazing, superbly talented players. But in my opinion there’s also a lot of bang average ones too and ones that have been included because managers are often guilty of sticking in their comfort zone and picking their old guard instead of players who have truly shown the better form during the season and in preceding qualifiers/friendlies. Jordan Henderson….need I say more?

JJWT · Yesterday 00:45

You know they have to qualify, like all other countries? So we could also have no teams in it. Are you suggesting "Africa" has one single team as they share a land mass?? All the various fractions of the old Yugoslavia have their own teams, its per country. Scotland is a country. This is a stupid thread.

Jacopo · Yesterday 00:45

Cycling is not a real sport.

SnowFrogJelly · Yesterday 00:51

This is a wind up right

Ziga · Yesterday 00:51

Is this a joke? The U.K. is made up of separate countries OP. What a strange question.

vodkaredbullgirl · Yesterday 00:54

Crazy 🤣

appleberryhandcream · Yesterday 00:58

@TheKittenswithMittenscould you please explain then how you competed in 1978?

Also, what did you do at the olympics, please?

AstonUniversityPotholeDepartment · Yesterday 01:00

The UK is allowed to field a separate team for each of its four nations as a clever bit of sabotage against UK chances of winning the men's World Cup. It's literally a case of Divide and Conquer, and we flipping ask for it.

Think what a team you could have if you could pull from the talent of England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland to create one UK team instead of four separate teams. The rest of the world wouldn't have a chance!

You must be a bloke to have competed in cycling in the 1978 Commonwealth Games. It is very clear from the wiki page for Commonwealth cycling. There's nothing to be ashamed of in admitting you are a man.

Geez, us Aussies are good at cycling. Sorry do carry on.Wales doesn't exist or some such, blah blah.

I really have done this stuff, and I am not remotely bothered about these insults. I am an Olympian too, but that's a whole other story.

These are Commonwealth Games 1978 athletes.
