AIBU to wonder why the UK gets 4 teams in the World Cup, whereas France only gets one.

Why don't we play as UK in the World Cup? Why do we get 4 teams when everyone else gets just the one? It would bring an end to anyone but England sentiment.

Not good enough to replace those that are already in the English team though. NI and Wales didn’t qualify, and I think we all know that Scotland will crash and burn. A UK team would be weaker because there would be pressure to have footballers selected from all four countries, which wouldn’t necessarily mean a stronger team.

Oh I don't know. England have taken Ivan "I'm a betting man, me" Toney, currently playing in the Saudi league, for reasons I can't fathom, . Whereas Scotland has the excellent Andy Robertson, a stalwart for Liverpool for many years and multiple major medal winner. In the recent-ish past, I'd have happily welcomed Ryan Giggs and Garath Bale into an England side, but alas, they played for Wales.

Well you certainly are not a woman, so my conclusion - based on the evidence - is you are a fantasist.

I saw Geoff Capes during filming of the TV programme Superstars when I was about 12. He was disappointing.

That’s a shame. I was hoping he’d have been lovely.

Cmon now OP, answer @SabrinaThwaite’s question about being an Olympian now.

MrsAvocet · 12/06/2026 23:39

JudgeJ · 12/06/2026 22:37

I think I read years ago that when the Olympic people were allocating initials they gave UKR to Ukraine and so the UK was given GBR.

I think that must be a myth, given that Ukraine didn't compete in the Olympics as a separate nation until the 1990s, following the collapse of the Soviet Union. Great Britain has competed as Great Britain ever since the first modern Olympics in 1896.

Zov · 12/06/2026 23:39

Not being funny @TheKittenswithMittens but the only people I ever hear saying they 'hope anyone but England wins' is the Scottish.

I have nothing against them, and would be very happy for them if they won the World Cup, but some of them say they are OK with ANYone winning, as long as it isn't England.

I don't understand why they say what they do about England (ie; 'ANYone can win, as long as it's not England!!!')

Oh, and NO, I do not want a UK team, I prefer it as it is - the individual countries.

.

Exactly. Can you imagine a situation where Scottish and English fans would be standing next to each other cheering the same team? It would feel…..wrong..

Thick as mince? Pretending you don't realise that the UK is made up of 4 different countries whereas France is a single country.

Or bored?

Or ?????

I will concede that Scotland might be a separate country, but Wales isn't.

If I had represented Gibraltar, I would have been proud to be there. I don't like being insulted and called a liar by people who probably have done nothing.

😂

I really have done this stuff, and I am not remotely bothered about these insults. I am an Olympian too, but that's a whole other story.

I don't believe the level of insults...... Why all the insults?

I don't like being insulted

Because we invented the game, codified the rules, set up everything and sat on every committee in FIFA for the important bits...hence why the rest of the world hate us. But it's our ball and we'll take it home with us. It's now worse that the top English league is by far the best in the world...they hate that even more

I’m a huge football fan (Everton ST holder for my sins!), but I beg to disagree re the PL being the best league in the world. It’s certainly the best promoted/marketed/monetised and the richest/most lucrative, especially for a select few clubs, players and their agents. But in my opinion, the general quality of the football on display week after week from most teams (and I very sadly include my own here), is utter garbage.

Hence why, when you get a top notch coach like Pep Guardiola coming into a Club that’s financially backed by sovereign wealth (even if they won’t admit it), being handed a huge budget and given carte blanche to curate a team packed full of world class talent, they go on to dominate the league year after year for the best part of a decade, whilst playing a standard and style of football far superior to that on offer from their competitors.

Tollington · 12/06/2026 23:50

If we had a UK team it would just be English players

AlcoholicAntibiotic · 12/06/2026 23:51

Zov · 12/06/2026 23:48

Ummm, it kind of is.

Most definitions of countries require them to have some kind of parliament.

Therefore I conclude that Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland are all countries. England, on the other hand, is the one that doesn’t have its own parliament.

ENGLANDalltheway · 12/06/2026 23:52

Bluespottedfrog · 12/06/2026 22:34

But to blow ops mind further the Channel Islands and a IOM are not part of Great Britain , only part of The British Isle(whixh is reflected on our passports). As Crown Dependancies they are covered by GB in foreign affairs. Manx athletes can therefore represent team GB in the Olympics due to this (Mark Cavendish). Football associations do not recognise the Isle of Man and players would have to qualify for a home nations team on parentage etc. The ICC however do recognise the Isle of Man.

Not sure if the op could handle that. Make it simple for them.

Zov · 12/06/2026 23:58

TheKittenswithMittens · 12/06/2026 22:10

England is not a country, either. The country is UK.

This thread is reminding me of an equally batshit thread from a couple of months ago, where the OP was saying the UK keep doing badly in The Eurovision Song Contest because everyone hates the English.

Many posters pointed out that it's the UK entering the contest (the 4 countries combined) so that can't be true. Quite simply, it's not England entering. The OP twisted herself out of shape and bent over backwards repeatedly through the thread trying to INSIST that the UK does badly because people hate the English, and that is why the UK keep losing. She would NOT accept that it was the UNITED KINGDOM participating.

Bonkers thread. This one is so like that one. Same kind of sentiment.

You can 'conclude' whatever you like, England is a country. Fact.

i was being facetious!

Does everything have to be explicitly marked as lighthearted on here now?

Stepsisterfromhell · Yesterday 00:08

I think your confusion comes from thinking that countries and nations are the same thing. The UK is composed of four nations. Their union is a political arrangement that unites their sovereign power but it’s also the case that their sovereignty has been divided recently by devolution. The four nations also have their own cultural identities. The other examples you gave of Normandy and Sicily are not separate countries OR nations, they are just part of France and Italy respectively.

With respect to the World Cup, only England and Scotland are represented because Northern Ireland and Wales did not qualify.

Explain why then:

182 premier league players
36 from championship

So 218 from English football

95 Bundesleague players

86 La Leagua from spain

It is, rather boringly, because each of the nations of the UK has its own Football Association recognised by FIFA and presumably regions of other countries don't.

Scotland is not a region. It is a country.
