I was in a similar job to now but in Tokyo 😎

BoarBrush · 19/09/2025 21:18

I was 19 and a cook in a Jewish care home. Was living my best life actually. I'm now a mother of 4 and an accountant, and yes I did pick a boring profession due to my disability.

MrJollyLivesNextDoor · 19/09/2025 21:21

FD (same as now) but for a different company

Hedgesfullofbirds · 19/09/2025 21:34

I was 31 and working as a reservoir and pumping station manager, managing 5 reservoirs totalling 231 acres of water body and a similar area of marginal wetland, wet woodland and reedbeds plus a late Georgian pumping station housing four sets of early electric pumps and the remnants of prior steam driven pumps. Wonderful job for me as it combined my two passions- history and environment/plants, birds, animals and insects!

Shayisgreat · 19/09/2025 21:45

Summer job in a school bookshop and then back to Uni

Lovingthelighterevenings · 19/09/2025 21:50

PDRA in So Cal - sometimes I wonder if I should have moved

BoredZelda · 19/09/2025 21:52

I had just graduated in to doing the job I’m doing now.

Dippythedino · 19/09/2025 21:55

Just started my first grad job post university at a local authority. I'm now head of department in an NGO.

ErrolTheDragon · 19/09/2025 22:07

I’m 64 now, will retire very soon. When I was 32 I was in the same job - writing scientific software - though since then because of mergers and acquisitions the company name has changed a few times, and the languages I write in are different. I’ve actively resisted being moved into management.

lifeonthelane · 19/09/2025 22:14

In 6th form and working in a DIY store on the weekends.

50lbstolose · 19/09/2025 22:48

I was In facilities, earning more than I do now, thanks to a career change to raise my children

itsallabitofamystery · 19/09/2025 23:15

I was working at NHS Direct, now the 111. Best time of my life. I worked Christmas Day and mostly spoke with old dears who were lonely. Quite sad really. But also some very very funny times, how we kept straight faces with some of the calls I’ll never know.

Sub2Mumma · 19/09/2025 23:16

Auxiliary in a hospital while completing my nursing course

SockQueen · 19/09/2025 23:28

I was a med student, so in training for what I do now, though the lectures and lab practicals from when I was 20 are a long way from my clinical work today. Did a bit of temping as medical secretary in the holidays.

soupmaker · 19/09/2025 23:40

I was working as a organiser for a trade union in London. Loved that job.

BigTubOfLard · 20/09/2025 03:30

27 years old and working on a cruise ship as a croupier (casino dealer). Fantastic gig money-wise and tons of downtime as onboard casinos only open when you're at sea, not when you're in port.
Now 54 and working as a senior technical writer for a software company.

GingerPaste · 20/09/2025 05:12

I was a technical writer.

Fleetheart · 20/09/2025 11:50

this sounds like a job my DD would love - do you know where she could look for something like that?

KawasakiBabe · 20/09/2025 11:53

I’m 58 and until I was made redundant recently, I’d been at the same company for 30y. I’d changed jobs and been promoted in that time though. Large corporate place, started as a customer service agent but ended up in a very technical role in finance. I hated it, I’m glad I was made redundant.

Uskie · 20/09/2025 12:20

I worked in London on a national newspaper.

Liked the job but don't miss the travel - did about 3 hours a day!

RaraRachael · 20/09/2025 12:23

Same job I was in my entire life - teaching - at the school I went to as did my kids

Bewareofstepfords · 20/09/2025 12:35

The tax office. DH also.
Acquaintances would wrinkle their noses until they wanted our help in getting tax refunds which we always gave. Then we were heroes!
NB Couldn't help 'em now because of confidentially rules.

Tarkan · 20/09/2025 12:36

I’d just dropped out of uni as I was expecting my eldest.

Hedgesfullofbirds · 20/09/2025 13:32

@Fleetheart - it was with British Waterways, the predecessor to what is now 'Canal & Rivers Trust', which, since it is now a charity, relies very heavily on volunteers, although it also has salaried staff too - worth a look. Or, possibly, the major water utilities companies?

Upstartled · 20/09/2025 13:35

Post grad study, a few hours each week teaching at uni and a p-t job doing admin work for a charity.
