Coworker snapped at the dress I'm wearing

I’m wearing a three-quarter length thin white crepe fabric sleeved dress with black ric rac at the bottom. It’s quite sheer, but it’s lined and I’m fine wearing it. It’s boho and vintage. I have thick black tights on with it and black ankle boots. My coworker, who works next door, came in and said, “Aren’t you cold in that”? I said, “No, I’m fine”. She said, “No you’re not”.
Well, I am! I wouldn’t have worn it if I wasn’t OK in it.
The dress is a bit like this:

What I’m really asking is why has what I’m wearing got anything to do with anyone?

Kickoff Ecru Plus Ric Rac Dress

Expertly designed with a split neck and tiered silhouette, the Kickoff Ecru Plus Ric Rac Dress effortlessly combines comfort and style. The short sleeves and black ric rac trim add a touch of elegance to this versatile dress, making it perfect for any...

Looks like a nice dress to me and I wouldn't find it inappropriate if someone wore it in my office. I would be cold in that though in this weather. Did she actually snap at you or was she genuinely thinking you would be cold wearing the dress.

I'm imagining the op looking like this!

www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-1166531/Why-Im-proud-wackiest-dresser-Britain-I-got-legs-25-year-old.html

For the record I have seen Sue in Person when she was in her 40s and she did have the most beautiful pair of legs.

Oh gosh 😆.
But seriously, I'm more this:

It's up to you what you wear. Someone in my building dresses like a Timmy Mallet tribute act who occasionally does a turn as Floella Benjamin. She thinks she looks good, thats the main thing

Nice

"Also I thought short floaty dresses with black tights and boots was dated now? That's what I wore 10 years ago."

Think nowadays following any fashion trend is a bit dated tbh. Looking around me now in here we've got a mix of suits, jeans, active wear, grunge......one day ill wear something like op describes, next ill fancy suited/booted, Fridays ill wear jeans and a t shirt.

Would say 10 years ago it probably mattered more to people that they followed a trend. Definitely not now IME.

Yea op tell your dress to stop winding up your colleagues by being all materially n shit 😂

Op is quite aware her style if dress does not fit in with the general dress code in the office. But she has no intention of fitting in with the others . She obviously doesn't want to be one of the team . She comes over as having a derogatory attitude to her workers and a " look at me" need to be the centre of attention.

BadSkiingMum · 03/10/2024 12:23

I’m saving that Sue Pollard article to enjoy later!

Did anyone else spot the frog-shaped handbag?!😁

user1471867483 · 03/10/2024 12:26

She answered her own question, basically. I told her I was fine temperature-wise in my dress, but she didn't respect my answer. I work in a beatifically warm office, but I don't know 🤷‍♀️??? I don't know why she had to comment in the first place.

If I saw you in the street looking like that, I'd imagine you had a supermarket trolley around the corner filled with all your worldly possessions that you had been collecting from rubbish that shops had put out for the bin men.

G5000 · 03/10/2024 12:28

As I say, unless posters are aware of the dress code it seems quite odd to say it's not appropriate

My office does not have a written dresscode. A colleague who came to office in bumskimming running shorts was still pulled aside and told that it was not appropriate. By the CEO. But I'm sure he was just jealous, right?

Things like pitching in, covering for people if they are off or busy are what id attribute to a team player.

Trying to imagine someone complaining to me that sarah isn't a team player because she dresses differently. Genuinely don't know what I'd do there except shoo the person away 😬

LadeOde · 03/10/2024 12:31

This is less about how you describe yourself and more about where you work (sector), and what is the dress code there? that's usually how it works. The fact you're going to very detailed lengths to describe your 'unique' self, sounds like you're wilfully ignoring the expected dress code and doing the whole wide eyed, 'what have i done wrong?', when it's pretty obvious what is wrong.

ItGhoul · 03/10/2024 12:32

I'm really laughing at people saying 'That's not appropriate office wear'. Do people not understand how much office dress codes vary and how different workplaces have completely different vibes? It's not the 1980s. Offices have moved on from the days when everyone had to wear a knee-length skirt suit with nude tights and court shoes, you know.

OP, your colleague needs to mind their own business and there is nothing wrong with what you're wearing for work. You're wearing a comfortable dress with opaque tights and boots. This would be perfectly OK in my office, and I work for a famously serious and venerable regulatory body.

I was in the office yesterday and I was in ankle-grazer jeans, leopard-print creepers, t-shirt and a skull printed scarf. My boss was in his usual uniform of jeans, Doc Martens and a Levi's hoodie. The two colleagues sitting opposite me were wearing a denim jumpsuit and a short smock dress over black tights and Mary Jane shoes.

Was ops arse hanging out of her opaque tights?

RampantIvy · 03/10/2024 12:34

I just work in an office and I'm very boho and unique in my dress sense. Think vintage, artisan and folksie - and that's me! I'd also describe myself as way out with a 1960s influence.

This sounds incredibly pretentious And possibly you're bugging your colleague with your need to identify yourself this way rather than just work....

Grin "I'm mad, me"
viques · 03/10/2024 12:34

It’s the sort of dress which in a Carry On film would have Sid James leering as you bent over to get something out of a low drawer. That’s how boho and vintage it is. The sixties were an office perverts paradise.

ThisFunHedgehog · 03/10/2024 12:35

I agree with other posters, I don’t think it’s appropriate for an office environment.

quantumbutterfly · 03/10/2024 12:38

A little self awareness goes a long way, are you more bo-ho or uh-oh.

If you can do your job well and not scare clients away I'm sure you'll have a bit of leeway.

LonelyInDville · 03/10/2024 12:38

This is tame compared to what I used to see at my old job. People dressed like they were going clubbing or work the streets. Even at my current place of work the CEO wears jeans so this would be appropriate.

Newwaves · 03/10/2024 12:40

I would have said it’s totally inappropriate for a work environment.

Lol. True. Best to ignore the haters.
The metaphorical “trolley filled with worldly possessions” serves as a reminder of what truly holds value in our lives—relationships, experiences, and personal growth. Let’s hope this trolley comes to no one, as it symbolizes the fleeting nature of materialism and the emptiness that often accompanies it.
