I am thinking of trying Match Betting my self. I don't want to spend all my time doing survey sites for a pittance.

Thanks, I’m interested in what you say about publishing journals - did it take a while to build up subscribers?

I suppose that’s the idea of Substack but on a more formal level.

My username is mine! I am a qualified sleep coach for 6 months - under 5s. I would love to do it as a main job but I also love my main job too! I'm so lucky to have two areas of interest that earn money and give me fulfilment. It's nice to have something I can do more or less of depending on my other commitments.

www.moneysavingexpert.com/team-blog/2020/02/how-to-earn-cash-from-market-research/

This is the link I initially found the list. I since met people at the focus groups who have shared other companies they are joined to, allowing me to sign up to more

Most of the companies say to watch out for the ads on their Facebook pages- I'm not on facebook. Is it essential?

MamaMode · 04/03/2024 21:44

@NobbyNobbs Im not on Facebook either. I apply for jobs primarily based on emails they send me. Very rarely I may look directly on their websites

Side hustle is a fancy flowery term for "my employer doesn't pay me enough to live on, so I have to I have to do a second job to make ends meet"

How did we end up here?

Sad for the state of society

@SwordToFlamethrower

Thats actually called a second job.

Some people just want a top up.

Usually people with side hustles are exploring a passion and it happens to make money. That’s my experience anyway. I know investment bankers that make loads that start a business because they are passionate about the cause (for example).

I agree - COL is sad.

Wow, busking is brave - which instrument?Did you just set up somewhere and start one day? How much might you earn in a session?

Thanks everyone for your suggestions! Little update: did some matched betting and joined some focus groups/market research groups.

This week I got £70 for participation in an hours focus group and made £40 on matched betting. £110 is not bad for two hours work in only a week 🥰

Not always.

My job is fairly paid and has fantastic benefits and perks (great pension, holidays etc). It's wfh, low stress because I know it inside out and no expectation to work a second outside my 35 hours. Plus I've been with the company 20 years and if the worst was to happen have an out of this world redundancy package which I'd never get elsewhere.

We're not struggling to live at all but we have 3 dc and money makes the world go round. I'd like to save more and start holidaying in more exotic places than we usually do.

I could probably make an extra £10k a year if I jumped ship to another company but I don't want to risk what I have and would find the pension and holiday allowance very hard to match elsewhere.

So I side-hustle instead. It's going on savings and holidays not the weekly shop.

Xenia · 09/03/2024 11:10

I agree. When I was an employee of a law firm I did not mark exam papers and the other things because my salary as below subsistence level but for additional things as we had school fees to pay; at one point the exam paper marking covered our summer holiday to France's cost. My reacher husband did the same - worked about 4 weeks in the summer holidays full time in a summer camp, is an organist (paid), music teacher etc - we just both seemed to have a particularly hard work ethic and still do in our 60s now working full time with the additional work too. eg he ( ex husband nowadays) and I are both working at least part of today - Saturday

AnonyLonnymouse · 09/03/2024 14:32

I agree, doing a side hustle doesn't necessarily mean you are on the breadline but it can be very wise to slice regular extra small amounts into a pension.

Plus it can be fun to do something different!

My day job pays me very comfy 6 figures. Side job is for fun and something I would do for free as well.

Evvyjb · 09/03/2024 18:22

I tutor. Work 65+ hours a week as HOD and then 10 hours tutoring. And examiner in the summer.

Fucking hell you're like a machine! That's a LOT of hours.

Hmm not sure it's as simple as that really. For myself, I'm pretty well paid working in finance, but I'm worried about funding my daughter through Uni so trying to put as much as I can away for that. The student loans just aren't enough, and obviously no grants like there were for my generation.

NobbyNobbs · 09/03/2024 19:29

@Fallenangelofthenorth I agree with this. I'm pretty well paid - higher than the national average - so I'm not on the breadline like so many y others.

Uni fees, buying DC a car when they're old enough - they're my lifestyle choices so I'd like to save for that.

I realise I'm still in a very lucky position compared to others.

I just think of making money nearly ALL the time. I want to get off my particular treadmill before I'm too old to enjoy life.

I'd love to think of well paid 2nd incomes.

Fallenangelofthenorth · 09/03/2024 20:10

@NobbyNobbs I've just had a friend ask me to work a couple of days a month to do his management accounts which I can do from home. Any chance you can do more of your day job part time? I like doing management accounts anyway, it's the favourite part of my job and he's putting me on his payroll as it's not worth getting insurance and doing a tax return for just one client.

Yep exactly. I am not on the breadline by any means but with two teens heading to uni (let alone the cost of housing for them to get on the housing ladder) and me not starting a pension until my late 30s it is sensible to save as much as you can. I’d also like to have some nice holidays and treat myself and my family. Nothing wrong with that- life is for living so why not earn as much as you can to enjoy it? Many people turn side hustles into interesting and lucrative careers. Why wouldn’t you be interested in doing that- it sounds brilliant

inabubble3 · 11/03/2024 12:49

There are some great side hussles here.

Ive tried matched betting- got up to about £500 with the simple beginner bets and stopped when it became more complicated (casino etc).

Also counted votes for local council.

Hosted foreign students for a local language school- was about £130 a few years ago. Have since stopped as we no longer have a spare room.

I really like the idea of feeding cats.
