What side hustles do you all do?

I am thinking of trying Match Betting my self. I don't want to spend all my time doing survey sites for a pittance.

I run a mobile creche. Childcare and babysitting for weddings, Charity events etc. It's not a guaranteed income but it can help with holiday budgets

Gingernaut · 24/02/2024 13:48

I occasionally work as a bank shifter for another Trust

Couple of hundred £££ here and there is no bad thing

dawngreen · 24/02/2024 13:49

And when you are in a minority group that job markets discriminate against. You have to make your own luck, and think outside the box.

I write books and work in the supermarket.

It depends, from month to month, which is the side hustle. Some months I get far more in royalties than I earn in my PAYE job, some months it's the other way round. So I could be said to have two side hustles and no real job...

Elections work for the local council. Polling station, the count and also in early autumn knocking on people’s doors to sign them up to the register.

I did matched betting but a few years ago when the offered were better. There's still money to be made but it's not as easy as it once was. I made a lot over around 4 years around 75k and paid off the mortgage :) it's like anything, the more time and effort, the more rewards you get.

@MelSilver

great!!

unfortunately I was too risk averse (without understanding how it worked! Still don't, but trust a few known posters who have done it enough, to give it a go)

Given I can't go back in time, & accept it's not so profitable now, where would you suggest I start. I'd need a 'MB for Dummies' type tutorial for it.

I sell a few handcrafted stationery and digital prints on Etsy. I'm only 3 months in and design /create when I have free time. I find the process of creating really enjoyable.

Is that tricky as a practitioner? I imagine that you wouldn’t normally know any of the children so you have to form an instant rapport, plus they might be all unsettled knowing that their parents are in the next room eating wedding cake! Do you have to take a ton of toys and equipment with you?

AnonyLonnymouse · 24/02/2024 14:18

@JS5
For lunches, I would say anything that isn’t a sandwich unless it’s a really fancy homemade focaccia sandwich.

I think the couscous or bulgur wheat with roasted vegetables type of options could go down well.

LimeViewer · 24/02/2024 14:19

I know quite a few people who teach trampolining, one mum got in through their child.
Loads including me do exam marking and standards verification for exam boards, I do loads of little roles on top of teaching but built up over years so I earn quite a lot from it now.
Reckon I could do matched betting, I don't gamble and am not tempted. Only started playing the lottery a few years back as a concession to charity.

@lostoldname

Did you just contact your local council or what?

I'd be interested in looking into it.

Sounds interesting - what software package do you use?

raspberrytart · 24/02/2024 14:24

I don't know how to reply to individuals- sorry! Yes, it can be quite stressful initially until children are settled. Once we've all had a bit of fresh air and a snack they are usually fine. We don't call on parents if there's a bit of whinging but full on screaming isn't good for anyone. Yes, I look at ages and abilities of children and plan resources accordingly. Parents are very grateful!

@AnonyLonnymouse

a few years ago I helped out a woman who did this.

As a Nanny I already had DBS, First Aud etc

Obviously I can't answer for Raspberry Tart, but yes, the children want to 'go party' with the adults/other kids. Which if the parents/organiser is fine with them going back & forth is ok, but I found it too stressful, not knowing who was actively responsible for a child at any time.

Had It been 'my gig' I'd have done things differently.

The huge van of toys/art supplies etc was a PITA to load/unload & with kids in wedding wear the arts dude was very limited.

covering a wide age range without a single focus was very very challenging too.

i wish Raspberry all the luck in the world, but it's certainly not for me.

Not like a side job but I make use of as many offers and cashback as possible on what I would have spent anyway. I work in Finance so this is basically a hobby, I bloody love it.
Eg:

  • Our DDs are in a cashback account (Sant 123 lite) which nets us £9pm.
  • Our spending money is done on a cashback Amex which gives around £180pa.
  • I'll move around our savings to maximise interest. Currently my minimum rate is 5.2%, I max out a regular saver at 8%.
  • I use 3x Halifax reward accounts which give me £15pm.
  • I use receipt apps for every receipt. I get on av £5pm from all 3. Shoppix and Storewards pay out to PayPal, Zipzero pays out to our electricity company.
  • I use Quidco for cashback and Honey on my browser for discount codes.
  • I stooze. I use 0% balance transfer, 0% purchase cards and PayPal pay in 3 accounts while putting the money to pay it off in savings at 5%+ interest. Total owed is currently £8k. This is one that could backfire horrendously if not managed properly.
  • I bank switch as often as I can. I think I've used them all now though. Earned over £1k in total for this for very little admin. I use burner bank accounts so it doesn't mess up our main current accounts.

I use Procreate on my iPad and/or a mixture of Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop. I also have a Cricut machine and a really good printer. Https://trixypix.etsy.com to give you an idea of what I make from home.

thanks! I did see your earlier post (& thought I'd said thank you, but maybe not). I watched their short intro video & was going through their joining process, but thought maybe I should use a separate email account & stalled at setting up a new one. 🙇🏻‍♀️🙇🏻‍♀️

Craft workshops and talks. Before covid me and a friend started doing this. Pivoted during the pandemic and now we do workshops for larger organisations who can pay abit more. Often a few grand per event.

OH is a teacher and tutors on the side. I have a few friends with teaching related side hustles (mainly sharing their skill, it could be business related or fitness like yoga).

How much do you get paid for marking please? I looked at the Capita website and I couldn’t find anything about pay - if it’s not worth the extra workload then I’m reluctant to spend my time applying!

Fluffycloudsfloatinginthesky · 24/02/2024 17:14

@Goldmember

I do a few of those - must admit you have more than me!

Love the idea of the zero purchase card and putting it in savings - with the current rates that's well worth it.

As well as the prolific I mentioned earlier I use TopCashback (went off quidco after a couple of declines)

I have a Santander edge account and keep exactly £4k in the edge saver.

I use airtime rewards which gets me money off my phone bill - I like that as it's linked to my cards so no need remember to go via a website. So in good transactions I can get .5% cashback on cc, maybe 2% cashback on airtime rewards and anything else through TopCashback.

I do a lot of my shopping via vouchers - I can buy them through work at around a 3 or 4% discount for the main shops.

I am a member of Amazon shopper panel and for uploading 10 receipts a month I get £5 voucher. Plus £2 for allowing ad tracking and sometimes another 50p for a quick couple of question survey. I think that maybe invite only though.

I work part time and DJ at weekends. DJing can be a good side hustle. You can earn a couple of hundred per gig

NobbyNobbs · 24/02/2024 17:56

I tried attapoll for surveys and made the grand sum of £33. Didn't even cover my monthly credit card bill so am seriously considering getting a bar job a few nights a week until I pay off my credit card.

ithinkitsdone · 24/02/2024 18:00

I make festival style jewellery and do some fairs too. Whatever I make goes into my gig ticket money pot. I could make more if I did more fairs but don't have the time. A couple of small shops stock the earrings and I get a bit from that too.
I used to do secret shopping and surveys but couldn't juggle it with work.

I used to do chaperone for kids / young people at theatres too.
