Hi all, has anyone else started a new thread yet?

OP posts:
Lindsaychad123 · 17/06/2022 12:02

@danblack87 yeah north for me lol rain rain rain but muggy! I’m working early shift in my weekend job so I’m hoping to do a bit if I can stay motivated to work

Chrissols · 17/06/2022 12:10

@danblack87 good thanks, hope alls good with you. Yes, I hold off as much as I can with hosepipe as metered water, having said that, I live in a very wet part of the country 🌧🌧🌧

danblack87 · 17/06/2022 12:12

@Lindsaychad123 So you work for Dict8 and you have a weekend job too. What do you do weekends working. Do you actually get any time off? I only work for Dict8 and it suits me very well to do that. I am self-employed working from home and I guess I get bored but I am always here if my daughter needs me to look after my grand-daughter. I cannot look for other work due to limitations. I love what I do but sometimes I get aggravated, of course, when the work does not move or is shite!

Meha5a · 17/06/2022 12:18

Is it me or have all the doctors been sucking Helium 🤷‍♀️ and speaking at 100 mph !!!!

danblack87 · 17/06/2022 12:25

@Meha5a 'sucking helium' 😂I am not even going in to check ...that is so funny ... I am sure we have one same specialty in common - it is too hot and I need to get out!!!

Lindsaychad123 · 17/06/2022 12:41

@danblack87 yeah I work from home at the weekend dealing with contractors that fix jobs at big hotel chains I love it. I’ve only been working from home for the last 4 months or so and I find it so much easier I’m here for my youngest daughter I can book appointments and work my day about me and not be chained to a desk. Previously 15 years with the nhs so was hard to leave the security but not the secretary job as it was becoming more and more involved with more put on our plate for no more money and we had to go into the office every day during the pandemic even though no patients were really being seen face to face. And not thanks x

Meha5a · 17/06/2022 12:47

@danblack87 I think we do LOL !! and you're not missing much !!!

Whitestar55 · 17/06/2022 14:19

@Lindsaychad123 It's good to hear someone has a WFH job that isn't actually transcription work and that they actually like it! NHS admin/med trans is the pits as far as I'm concerned 😢apart from the pension, if you have one.

OP posts:
Lindsaychad123 · 17/06/2022 14:25

@Whitestar55 even the pension isn’t great anymore but I have 15 years into it but yeah I love my remote job been very lucky so far,

Whitestar55 · 17/06/2022 16:28

@All Truth be told, if I were younger I would be out of here and pursuing a career in design/engineering or science, but instead I've got myself stuck in this rut that bores me silly, I can't effing spell, I hate writing, my mind wanders when I listen to something I'm bored with and I hate the motonony of listening to and typing out someone else's creation and to top it all the exploitation and poor pay pulls the icing off the poorly risen cake. I'm not belittling the job or anyone who does it, it isn't easy and takes quite some patience and endurance, which I have for some things, but for this I only have frustration. Okay, it can get you out of a rut on a temporary basis, but mostly it puts you in one as far as I'm concerned. Well at least the sun's shining today. I think I'd better give up and go out in it now 😂

EmilyJ23 · 17/06/2022 16:37

Hi everyone

i am a medical secretary but can’t work at the minute due to my health. I am Keen however to work from home a few hours to have a bit of pay coming in

just wondering
are dict8 are a good company to work for?
is the dictation usually clear or is it a pain to listen to
pay rates
any other company that is better than Dict8?

Lindsaychad123 · 17/06/2022 17:49

Oh I know what ur saying it suits me the now as I do 4 or 5 hours 4 days a week for my play money every month that’s what I call it. Means I can be here for my daughter as she’s had a hard time and then I’m really interested in my weekend job so hopefully I can take that forward in a few years but I can totally get the stuck in a rut feeling x hope u enjoyed the sun x

user1493458352 · 17/06/2022 21:03

I look at this way, yeah it is frustrating and pay isn’t great but at least I can go swimming every day when I want (my passion) so I’m fitter than when I worked and also with petrol prices wFh isn’t so bad. Yeah I hate the proof readers and the shitty dictation and the awful pay but on a sunny day I can sit in my garden as soon as I’ve finished and this is coming from someone who has had a shit month with them last month and was looking to Jack it all in. Tomorrow I’ll probs
be on here moaning again.

Lindsaychad123 · 18/06/2022 07:03

U defo need to weigh up the pros and cons of it to be honest, no the pay isn’t great but for the majority there is work to do it’s not always great but enough to muddle through but I have no commute, I work when I want to. And I don’t have that 9-5 grind and pressure. So defo pros and cons

Whitestar55 · 18/06/2022 08:46

It depends on on your circumstances, it's great having no commute and working when you want and from home, those are the pros for me. The cons are, low pay, long gruelling hours to earn anywhere near minimum wage, no pay rises, no pension, no prospects, monotonous, you don't learn new skills to allow you to progress to better WFH jobs, no holidays or sick pay, not good for your health, physical and mental, uncertainty of availability of work, majority of the dictation is unclear/ challenging,
security, and reaching older age being stuck in the same position until you can claim the state pension in your late 60s and probably still needing to do some transcription work to top that up anyway. Short term and as a back up if you don't rely on it as your only income and you're not the only wage earner in your household, it's ok. All this is my opinion of course.

OP posts:
Lindsaychad123 · 18/06/2022 09:59

@Whitestar55 defo pros and cons but the pros definitely outweigh the cons for me at this moment in time as I need to be at home for the moment and do feel I have my weekend job that if I can get through the next 3 years of school with my daughter I defo want to progress in that other job the nhs ground me down and that is getting as bad with the no prospects etc

Meha5a · 18/06/2022 10:15

@EmilyJ23 only you can decide if it is for you. People have moaned about work since day dot ! As pointed out there are pros and cons. I put up with this job because I can do the work when I feel like it, no rush hour traffic/paying extortionate petrol prices and no silly NHS courses to constantly be sent on !!! and putting up with work colleagues/NHS managers who I would avoid like the plague under normal circumstances 😅

The biggest bonus is having this thread to let off some steam, makes it worthwhile !!

Gally123 · 18/06/2022 10:46

@EmilyJ23 - you will need to register as self-employed and it is likely to affect the tax you pay in your main job as well. However, DICT8 are one of the few WFH companies that let you work as much or as little as you like, so many these days demand full time, or contracted hours. I also work for TPro and am contracted for 150 letters a week. I applied to WeType (avoid them for various reasons) and they wanted mornings or afternoons only as a minimum.

Whitestar55 · 18/06/2022 10:55

@Lindsaychad123 I think you are wise to not rely on freelance transcription alone, best wishes, I hope your plan works out.

@EmilyJ23 It's worth doing for some extra pay, you have nothing to lose in those circumstances as you are not tied into a contract and can pick up and drop the work as you like. However, you need to register as self employed and do a self assessment yearly to keep on top of your tax and NI contributions, it's pretty simple to do that online though.

Lovemydaxie · 18/06/2022 11:21

@EmilyJ23 I think it is ideal to do as a stop gap, as an additional income or when you need to be at home for children, etc. The biggest advantage with Dict8 is that you can do it or not do it as the fancy takes you, no contract to do a set number of hours/letters per week. Yes, a lot of the transcription is difficult to understand and that's really frustrating, but if you get a good day with really clear files (it does happen!), then you can earn reasonable money. If only every day were like that. Most of us find that we do a few files, get a load of rubbish so have to stop until that clears and then go back to it so it can be very sporadic. I have been registered with them since 2006 and over Covid I relied on it as my own source of income, but I now do it alongside a part-time three day a week job and for me approaching the end of my working life, it suits me. I would say get registered with them and give it a go to see how you get on as you have nothing to lose. The first few weeks when they are checking all of your work can be grim with the ridiculous feedback, but don't let it get to you and they eventually stop. Oh, and come on here to vent when you have a bad day like the rest of us😁

EmilyJ23 · 18/06/2022 11:21

Thanks everyone for your help and advice!

I have also looked at outsec as well as dict8.

as I said I am unfit to work in my actual job at the moment and my manager isn’t allowing me to work from home doing my actual job 🤷🏼‍♀️ so this is why I’m trying to earn a little money from somewhere

The part that really appeals to me is you chose yourself how much you work and you are not in contracted hours and also The working from home as no rushing to get ready, stuck in traffic, office politics, manager bossing you about, silly training that is pointless that you don’t have time for 🤪 etc

just need to find the right company to sign up to

EmilyJ23 · 18/06/2022 11:27

Ooohh also wondering if you pick up a dictation and it is impossible to understand or a few words you’re not sure of, what happens? Do you have to finish it as you have opened it or do you email a manager to say you weren’t sure of some things or type what you can even if you have to leave some blanks

Whitestar55 · 18/06/2022 12:04

@EmilyJ23 No Emily, you are not obliged to finish a task once you have picked it up, you can ditch it back into the list with no explanation. It happens frequently believe me! 😀If there are just a few words you can't understand, there is a facility to flag them up in a 'notes box', you can't be expected to understand the impossible. This also happens frequently! 🙁Give it a try and see how you get on.

OP posts:
danblack87 · 18/06/2022 12:25

@EmilyJ23: I would definitely give Dict8 a try. It works for me and my circumstances. I am here when needed for my family and I at least having something to lift the boredom and restlessness of a day ... well, most of the time !!

user1493458352 · 18/06/2022 12:41

Exactly my thoughts.
