JOB HUNT CLUB - support thread for those looking!

Octo · 07/01/2008 17:45

After finding a few others looking for a new job - here it is - the 2008 job club. Not planning to find you a job - more a support thread for people struggling to find a job!

So a few details will be needed:

age, area, job type, hours, thoughts

I'll go first:
35
Bath/Wilts
Teaching, education or self employed
Flexible - must do school drop off/holidays

Thoughts: most jobs that pay enough seem to be full time which can't do as must do school drop off. Seem to relatively over qualified for most jobs that aren't in education. Can't find anything interesting to do from home.

oh I need this. Got made redundant while on ML - nice.

Also 35, living in NW England, looking for 20-25 hours per week, probably will end up in something clerical again.

Like you I've noticed the part-time jobs are paid far less pro-rata than I've been used to.

Current major problem is my cv is trapped on the pc which is trapped in our junk room (used to be a bedroom and will be again). I can't get motivated to even go and fire up the pc .

God I hate job hunting.

Welcome talktothebees!

I have no CV so have only looked at jobs which you apply online for or get a form!

Maybe that should be top of my list!

Octo, don't rule out applying for full time jobs. if they want you, they may be willing to negotiate on hours. What hours would you want to do? do you need to do collecting from school too?

Octo · 08/01/2008 09:30

There is an after school club so not too bad on that front but must drop them off.

It is all very frustrating!

CaptainDyson · 08/01/2008 10:44

Hurrah!!!!!!

I made it - At last!!

KatyMac · 08/01/2008 10:46

Could you guys come & look at my job advert & tell me where I am going wrong thanks

I am struggling

BTW Congrats Captain - I guess you got a job

CaptainDyson · 08/01/2008 10:48

OK.

I am 25 and live in Eastbourne, East Sussex. I am looking for bloody anything that doesn't involve wiping anyone else bum except my own and my children's and cleaning anyone elses house except my own and my best friends! I am looking for something that is about 2 - 2 1/2 days (17/18 hrs ish) and preferable during the day.

I have a degree, which means absolutely bugger all and not a lot of experience, whcih means I am permentantely stuck in the "no experience, no job, no job, no experience" vicious circle.

Argh!!!! Soooo frustrating .....

Octo - did you send me those jobs on email btw!!?

Octothechildherder · 08/01/2008 10:48

No job for dippy yet - but we're here for you - together we can make it!

CaptainDyson · 08/01/2008 10:49

PMSL KatyMac- I blody wish - No I was just excited because I managed to find this thread!!!!

Octothechildherder · 08/01/2008 10:50

No dippy- didn't email you any jobs!

I have looked on nearly every website I can think of and nothing ....

CaptainDyson · 08/01/2008 10:50

How am I ever going to get a job - it takes me an hour to find a thread on MN!

Octothechildherder · 08/01/2008 10:52

Katymac - that sounds fine - where do you live and can I apply for the second job??

KatyMac · 08/01/2008 10:53

My job wouldn't suit you then - it involves wiping lots of bums apart from being in the wrong area....sorry

KatyMac · 08/01/2008 10:54

Norfolk

Octothechildherder · 08/01/2008 10:56

hmmm could be tricky with mileage

So dippy - what kind of job are you looking for? How long did you work in the nursery shop for? I could do that - love kids shops - maybe should go look round the windows in Bath.

KatyMac · 08/01/2008 10:56

No suggestions for improving my job ad then?

CaptainDyson · 08/01/2008 11:08

Will take a peek and get back to you honey!

LOL @ you walking round looking in shop windows, Octo - NOT the point, young lady!

I worked in shop for over a year - only casual, one pm a week, not really a proper job tbh....miss it though

Sigh.

Would like to do an admin type job - nothing too taxing for my tiny pea sized baby brain!

Octothechildherder · 08/01/2008 11:19

I HAVE GOT A JOB INTERVIEW

I'm not sure if this is a saddo job or not but its thurs/fri/sat 10.30 - 17.30 being one of those taster people in sainsburys - 18 hours @ £7.16 per hour = £128.88 per week! Doesn't particularly use my degree but at least every day will be different.

CaptainDyson · 08/01/2008 11:26

Well Done!!!

Octothechildherder · 08/01/2008 11:28

dh doesn't think should do saturdays - which I agree with really - so will go anyway and just ask to do thurs/fri - he said there was casual work available.

I have also put a supply teaching form into the local secondary school - so could od both.

CaptainDyson · 08/01/2008 11:35

All sounds promising. xx

talktothebees · 08/01/2008 20:50

well since my last (only) post I have done sod all about looking for a job and STILL not dug out my CV.

Is it really OK then to apply for a job and then ask for different hours if they offer it to you? I hadn't even considered doing that. I suppose I'm going to have to learn to be a bit cheeky now .

I really should also work out as well what kind of wage I need to bring home to make it all worthwhile. Anyone know of any idiot-proof sites that let you work out your take home pay and tax credits and stuff? Or is down to my brain, a calculator and a pint of gin for motivation?

Good luck with both jobs Octo. Are you a qualified teacher then? If so I am very jealous. I let that boat sail me by and still regret it a bit

CaptainDyson · 08/01/2008 21:59

I let that boat sail passed me too; but tbh I pulled the anchor out all by myself and grinned happily and waved innanly (sp?) as it sailed serenely out into the ocean (Read: kids make me wanna puke )

Am a little though cos Octo has a vocation and I don't. Sigh.

I do have a CV - but I have zilch experience so, hey, my CV is about less than useless.

Get off your backside TTTB!!!!

Thee's my toen bit of support for this evening.

.... and there endth the lesson.

Beauregard · 08/01/2008 22:02
