I used to sign off Kind regards but DD28 says this is very bad!! and at least change it to Best Regards.
I am re-joining the workforce after several years out so am a bit clueless on the correct sign off etiquette. So how do you do it?

Most of our managers literally just use their first Inital. Recently a consultant was sending me some emails and kept signing off H xx Smile I think.. as she was replying on her phone to emails she was automatically ending with xx emails via the pc didn’t come with an xx Made me laugh

howardmoonseyebrow · 22/02/2022 21:05

I hate Kind Regards… what does it even mean?? If people sign off kindest regards it gives me the rage! I just think they both come across as quite passive aggressive 🤔

howardmoonseyebrow · 22/02/2022 21:08

Sparklingbrook

'Hope you are well' always sounds like they're after something or special treatment.

If i get an email saying this I always think just get to the point! 🤣

CosmicComfort · 22/02/2022 21:10

I use Many Thanks for everything, I’m not a fan of a Kind Regards and I don’t know why.

I feel like All the Best is generally used in a passive aggressive way IME, same as Regards.

I rarely use regards but if I do, I am really pissed off but trying to be polite. I assume others use it in the same way🤣

alwayslearning789 · 22/02/2022 21:14

@52helloisitmeyourelookingfor
Kind regards if it's a pleasant exchange
Regards if I'm mildly annoyed
And just my name if I'm really pissed off

And:

@47YouCantTourniquetTheTaint

It depends on who the email is going to
Kind regards - Formal
Regards - Someone who has pissed me off
Just my name - ooohhhh yove done it now
Many Thanks - informal I know the person

Yup... That's what I use too....

superking · 22/02/2022 21:16

This has been such an interesting read! I used to be a Kind Regards person. Now I save that for formal correspondence and use Best Wishes, or Best for close colleagues/ when I'm going back and forth in a chain of messages. Sometimes Thanks or Many thanks if I'm asking a favour.

Usually start with Hi unless it's formal external in which case I start with Dear but usually downgrade to Hi a few messages into the chain (feels like you've built a bit of a relationship by then).

HoliHormonalTigerlilly · 22/02/2022 21:19

@Allsorts1

I know I’ve already said it but I’m now pondering the beauty of “many thanks” and I think I like it so much because it actually says something. Like you’re just saying thank you again - and 95% of the time it applies to the email. If it’s weird to do a thank you sign off I’ll go with “best wishes”. I actually made the switch to many thanks quite recently after receiving emails with it as a sign off and having a positive reaction to it, like oh that’s lovely another thank you in the mix.

All you “best” PPs take note - looking at you @HoliHormonalTigerlilly 😂 and loling at warmest pee.

@starsinyourpies love this mug!

Only the very warmest pee for you @Allsorts1

Thoughts and prayers,
Tigerlilly xx

I send and receive a lot of emails to and from academics. It's common to get "Hi Daisy" or "Dear Daisy". Never "Dear Dr Grey" unless they're external.

Similarly I get a lot of "kind regards", "best wishes", "Thanks" and the occasional "cheers" depending on how well I know them.

Personally I like to live in neutral chaos and use "Best" most of the time, unless I'm being a bit stern then it's "Kind regards" and finally if I'd rather you caught fire than email me again it's "Regards".

As a side note, someone continues to email me and uses "In friendship, Doris" and it makes me lose the will to live every single time.

SockFluffInTheBath · 22/02/2022 21:26

This made me laugh too much. It’s always just regards in my company, that’s a lot of fires Grin

Saffy321 · 22/02/2022 21:28

Surely love and kisses?

SnowdropsInSpring · 22/02/2022 21:30

I can’t stand the hierarchy of passive aggressive/ annoyed sign offs. Seems a bit silly really. I had a manager I hated and she began the 'regards' business with me and I just wanted to reply, 'do I really care?'

chopsadoodle · 22/02/2022 21:33

Peace out fuckers
Brrrrrap brrrrrrrap.

Or

Thanks MyName

Depends really. Grin

But that's the problem, you can't reply 'do I really care' when at work
MidnightMeltdown · 22/02/2022 21:35

Wow, I never knew that people read so much into an email sign off! 🤣

To me, kind regards and best wishes are for informal emails.

Formal is regards, although I will typically use many thanks or something similar.

SnowdropsInSpring · 22/02/2022 21:35

Nope. But I don’t know whether she thought she was being clever, or thought she was hurting me. She just came across as pathetic (and I wanted to say so, but couldn’t Grin )

donquixotedelamancha · 22/02/2022 21:37

I don't end my work emails with anything, except perhaps my name if a bit more formal.

MN recently informed me this gives the impression I despise my colleagues and am angry all the time. This was not my intention, just a happy coincidence.

JammyCandy · 22/02/2022 21:37

I once received an email signed off

“I have 100 days until my retirement and quite frankly it can’t come soon enough”

Grin

SouthernFashionista · 22/02/2022 21:40

I hate ‘kindest’ - I had a particularly inept colleague who thought she was all that who always signed off with kindest. She left a complete shit show behind her when she left. None of us were feeling very kindly towards her.

MidnightMeltdown · 22/02/2022 21:43

'In friendship' is hilarious!

I might use that to annoy colleagues that I don't like Grin

marlowe5 · 22/02/2022 21:43

@piglet81

I usually put ‘best wishes’. ‘Regards’ and ‘kind regards’ always make me feel scratchy for some reason!
I agree with this. Something about 'regards' that sounds distancing and 'kind' that sounds patronising. I say 'best wishes'.
ViceLikeBlip · 22/02/2022 21:44

"Best regards" isn't a thing......?

GalactatingGoddess · 22/02/2022 21:46

Kind regards always, unless annoyed.

Never best regards.

Belle96 · 22/02/2022 21:46

Email signature which is set out by the business is kind regards, can add anything additional before that but that is just standard
