How do you sign off on work Emails?

I used to sign off Kind regards but DD28 says this is very bad!! and at least change it to Best Regards.
I am re-joining the workforce after several years out so am a bit clueless on the correct sign off etiquette. So how do you do it?

@ferneytorro

Best is missing a word surely. Best what? Usual one from me is many thanks or cheers if very informal ie someone in my team or ta if I’m asking them to do something (probably a bit northern for some!). Agree that starting an email with just a name is akin to typing ‘you are fucking useless therefore I am having to explain again in words or one syllable”
I got first named a few months back Grin Felt like a 5 year old being told off!
LadyMonicaBaddingham · 22/02/2022 20:26

I'm grateful that I live in Wales and 'Diolch yn fawr' is perfectly acceptable...

Allsorts1 · 22/02/2022 20:32

I’m a big big fan of “many thanks”

Allsorts1 · 22/02/2022 20:32

If anyone signs off “best” I assume they hate my guts

BortLicencePlate · 22/02/2022 20:36

I mix it up and am very inconsistent! Either:
Kind regards
Many thanks
Best wishes

@DetailMouse

What I really struggle with is when I send an email in the evening, knowing they won't see it till morning. I can't put good evening but it's not morning either!
Do a 'schedule send' email to arrive in the morning.

Or sign it off for the time you wrote it…

HoliHormonalTigerlilly · 22/02/2022 20:41

I say:

Blah... blah... blah...,

Best,
Tigerlilly.

HoliHormonalTigerlilly · 22/02/2022 20:42

Or just Regards if they are really getting on my nerves.

HoliHormonalTigerlilly · 22/02/2022 20:42

Thanks.

For internal emails

Oh no!
ISeeTheLight · 22/02/2022 20:44

Almost always - many thanks
If I'm getting a bit annoyed- thanks
If I'm seriously utterly pissed off with you - regards.

That said I work in advertising which isn't a formal industry. And emails are almost always external - we use slack internally and also on a day to day basis with clients. Emails are usually for third parties when I'm asking them for something.

Allsorts1 · 22/02/2022 20:44

@HoliHormonalTigerlilly 🤣 something to bear in mind!

starsinyourpies · 22/02/2022 20:45

Some of you might need this mug. I bought it for DH but wouldn't use in my own office, it is totally true though!

I find it really cringey when people sign off "Warmest Regards"

Makes me think they've just peed themselves for some reason 🤣🤣🤣

YouCantTourniquetTheTaint · 22/02/2022 20:47

It depends on who the email is going to

Kind regards - Formal
Regards - Someone who has pissed me off
Just my name - ooohhhh yove done it now
Many thanks - informal I know the person

I hate best regards, I don't know why, but it absolutely pisses me off, I don't think it makes sense.

Regards is soooo arsey isn't it 🤣

OOAOML · 22/02/2022 20:47

Usually kind regards, which I held out against for ages as I don't like it but it is fairly standard. Sometimes thanks. Sometimes so tempted to finish with 'hope this helps' but restrain myself.

TheSmallAssassin · 22/02/2022 20:48

I've used Cheers since about 1993 and use it for everyone.

YellowMonday · 22/02/2022 20:51

I use,

  • "cheers" for informal/work friends
  • "kind regards" for more formal/heads of/c-suite
  • and a passive aggressive "regards" when I'm annoyed/mad/frustrated with someone haha.
AlwaysLatte · 22/02/2022 20:51

Emails, All the best to people I know quite well, or best, or kind regards to people I don't. Yours sincerely or yours faithfully in letters.

TheDoveFromAboveCooCoo · 22/02/2022 20:52

This is one that I think you need to adapt to fit the company culture.

In my current company Kind regards and best regards all seem a bit too formal for me. I use warm regards. We are quite a small company and most women put hugs or kisses on their emails so I think my "warm regards" fits in quite well!

That may sound unprofessional to some but we are a very close knit team with great friendships between us. Even with my administrator who is a lot older than me and Eastern European and greets me with "Oh Dove My DARRRRLING!!"

AlwaysLatte · 22/02/2022 20:53

I usually start it good morning/afternoon/evening, including their name 'for the attention of' if I know it. Or less informally, Hi-name.

spacehardware · 22/02/2022 20:54

I hate 'kind regards' and only ever type 'regards'

It amuses me so many people apparently interpret this as rude

Allsorts1 · 22/02/2022 20:56

I know I’ve already said it but I’m now pondering the beauty of “many thanks” and I think I like it so much because it actually says something. Like you’re just saying thank you again - and 95% of the time it applies to the email. If it’s weird to do a thank you sign off I’ll go with “best wishes”. I actually made the switch to many thanks quite recently after receiving emails with it as a sign off and having a positive reaction to it, like oh that’s lovely another thank you in the mix.

All you “best” PPs take note - looking at you @HoliHormonalTigerlilly 😂 and loling at warmest pee.

@starsinyourpies love this mug!

2KidsNoTime · 22/02/2022 20:59

Always say hi at start of my emails- both internal and external. I'm in the legal profession but work in tech sector so we're pretty relaxed.

Sign off is usually just "thanks". Kind regards is what we put if we're annoyed 😂
