How do you sign off on work Emails?

I used to sign off Kind regards but DD28 says this is very bad!! and at least change it to Best Regards.
I am re-joining the workforce after several years out so am a bit clueless on the correct sign off etiquette. So how do you do it?

Best Regards sounds awful

Yes agreed. What kind of organisation does your son work for? I’m a big public sector organisation and I’ve never seen this used…. I have seen JFDI used though ( a long time ago)

NightmareSlashDelightful · 22/02/2022 10:07

I don’t do sign-offs at all — it’s not a handwritten letter!

‘Best’ is basically a punch in the face as far as I’m concerned.

‘Kind regards’ is increasingly a joke — you mean to be neither kind nor regarding. I think the young’uns dislike it because it’s a) old fashioned and b) often disingenuous.

MirandaWest · 22/02/2022 10:09

I put kind regards for external people. Regards if I’m a bit pissed off with them. Tend to do best wishes for internal people.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 22/02/2022 10:23

This is fascinating.
I've never thought of 'Regards' as being a grumpy sign off.
This might mean everyone in the office hates me Grin.

OhJesusEffingChrist · 22/02/2022 10:24

Love you always you sexy bastard ❤

iklboo · 22/02/2022 10:38

Kind regards or best wishes. Best regards doesn't make sense.

gettingolderandgrumpy · 22/02/2022 10:45

Kind regards or just regards if they’ve annoyed me which is often. A colleague is often thanks .

Libertybear80 · 22/02/2022 10:47

A close colleague- Many Thanks
Inside organisation- Best Wishes
Outside- Kind Regards

Then my first name

StrawberryLollipops · 22/02/2022 10:49

@MrsRobinsonsHandprints - they don't. MN is where I see people saying Regards is PA - at work I find people think 'Kind regards' is PA and in geenral everyone uses Regards.

That's why I said in my next post to OP - just do as you see the ones you work with doing. Then it blends in and no one notices.

EBearhug · 22/02/2022 10:50

It depends. Usually just, Emma, or Thanks, Emma. But with certain colleagues, with whom I've worked for many years, I'll go totally over the top, starting with Dearest esteemed colleagues, and ending with something, Yours, as ever in humble* gratitude, Ms Bearhug. Obviously not on mails likely to end up with a wider audience... but emails can be very dull.

  • Sometimes I'll add a P.S. to point out I might be making the humble bit up.
FawnFrenchieMum · 22/02/2022 10:56

I usually put thanks & regards, Frenchie

BlackCoffeeInAPoolOfSunshine · 22/02/2022 10:58

viele liebe Grüße

Grin

which actually could be translated as many kind regards - or as many loving greetings 🤣

I always feel as though I'm being ironically over effusive when I write it, which is excellent for very background level amusement, but its actually a completely normal thing to sign off a work email with (at least where I work).

TigerLilyTail · 22/02/2022 11:01

I hate Kind regards because my coworker always signed her emails with it no matter how rude or condescending they were. I couldn't stand her or her emails or her stupid kind regards.

I just use thanks in my emails.

LondonQueen · 22/02/2022 11:02

I put kind regards, many thanks or if I'm pissed off just regards.

LtGreggs · 22/02/2022 11:04

I use 'best' and have done for years. Am surprised that this is taken as aggressive Blush - I was definitely going for a friendly but businessy vibe.

I like the PP idea of it being a birthday card - I am like a little present to my dear clients all day long Smile

Sparklingbrook · 22/02/2022 11:05

'Best wishes' is what i might write in a birthday card. Grin

GrandPrismatic · 22/02/2022 11:09

Thanks
Grand

Or if I like the person and I either need them to do something or they have done something I need then they get treated to a exclamation mark :)

Thanks!
Grand

lopape · 22/02/2022 11:10

Best regards or best or thanks.

Always start with hi, anything more formal is too formal in my industry

WindyWilma · 22/02/2022 11:11

Oh wow. Thank you for the responses. Will read and digest.

So DD says Kind regards is like saying 'Thats nice' in a Mrs Brown voice!! and that I need to find a new sign off.

TinDogTavern · 22/02/2022 11:13

I have an irrational hatred of kind regards.

I usually say regards or best wishes. Best or all best too. No idea this was twattish.

Thanks, sometimes cheers. I bloody love Sunny Greetings, mentioned upthread, might start using that. (VERY informal sector). Smile

axolotlfloof · 22/02/2022 11:29

I also think Sunny Greetings is great, and would go down well in my workplace, where nobody ever meets in real life.
I use Kind Regards, and like it.

FAQs · 22/02/2022 11:31

Kind Regards (if everything is great)
Regards (if I’m pissed off)
Name (if pissed off and angry)

WouldIwasShookspeared · 22/02/2022 11:32

Best wishes

Repetitivebeats · 22/02/2022 11:39

Usually "Many thanks" unless the email is specifically to thank someone for something in which case I change it to "kind regards". Otherwise, the email gets a bit repetitive and over-thanking!

I don't often notice what people in the UK use, but I do pay attention when I get emails from overseas as I like the differing styles. Emails from Japan are my favourite as they are very formal and refer to people (especially senior bods) with a -san suffix, like "please can you ask Janet-san to address this point"

ferneytorro · 22/02/2022 11:47

Best is missing a word surely. Best what? Usual one from me is many thanks or cheers if very informal ie someone in my team or ta if I’m asking them to do something (probably a bit northern for some!). Agree that starting an email with just a name is akin to typing ‘you are fucking useless therefore I am having to explain again in words or one syllable”
