You find us busily setting up a new home for our wonderful project. Will be making a special cosy corner for Soupy's poor blind cat - recently blinded by fiesta and her very bright blanket kit Gin

As has been since the first year, this has been an astonishing team effort, folk never fail to amaze. THANK YOU! x

Our first project thread is here.... That was the one where we frantically made SQUARES and some folk made whole blankets, there was a lot of gin and the word characterful was used a lot Grin

On the last thread we reached the dizzying heights of 64/100 absolutely gorgeous finished blankets, so here's hoping this thread sees us through to target...

Ooooo, and this will be the thread where we share the Early Bird 2019 info if anyone has been inspired or just wants to get ahead! Thanks

The photo is from last year, tis the wonderful group who came to Portsmouth.

Cracking on then Grin

Morning all!

Oh this colour thing, Knots and I are very much of the line that colour and gender don't go together, neither my DC nor hers think this way either, you just have what you like. Can't bear to think that girls should choose something because they are girls and vice versa. Tis just not us!

And then we met the first Chernobyl group, and I think MrsH has it, in the less liberal, more rigid way, and you could see the difference in thinking. Wish we could change them, but that isn't going to happen, and we would all rather make them something they like, so it probably easier to go this way. We would happily give boys blankets with pink mixed in, and have done, but possibly not where it was the dominant colour iyswim?

Totally agree how it doesn't sit right

I agree about shopping for clothes, loathe that 'Mummy's princess' pink shitola and then the tiny corner of boy clothing in blue and khaki. It's fine when they are small and can just wear clothes, but the moment their shape starts changing it becomes a mare. My DD at primary used to wear navy cargo shorts and a white t shirt, like the boys because it was much better than a nasty polyester gingham dress. She did wear those too, but she was so tall that they barely covered her arse.

Hope the sunburn eases!

Hello. My 'I've Got one more square in me' square is almost done. Is it to be sent to the same address?

Ta.

bookbook · 14/05/2018 10:19

I'm supposing one of the problems you may have - do you get to know the split of boys/girls coming over. Or is it a strict 50/50 ?
My little DGS absolutely adored those new t shirts that colour change and you stroke them from one pattern to another - she finally managed to find one that did Captain America logos, but needle in haystack isn't in it ( and at 5 , he is in 7-8 year clothes, which is another nightmare re choice of camouflager/navy/ nasty cartoons! )

We never know who will be coming, this year it happens to be more girls than boys. Some groups like Bristol and Portsmouth bring over half and half every time, others seem to just bring the children, for example this year all those visiting Aberdeen are girls. They are aged between 10 and 14

Actually looking at our spreadsheet, this year we have a lot more girls coming

My DD used to wear those bloody gingham dresses all year round. Couldnt get her out of them.

Thankfully she grew out of this by Y6 as she was then as tall (or taller!) as a lot of my School Run Friends. They would have been more of a cropped top by then,

SoupDragon · 14/05/2018 11:32

I am idly wondering what else to shove in my parcel as I have about 2kg of spare capacity due to the pricing bands.

SoupDragon · 14/05/2018 11:32

Poor Blind Cat comes in at 7kg so I can’t shove him in.

MadisonAvenue · 14/05/2018 11:37

I always remember when my oldest was born and I dressed him in a peach coloured babygro in hospital. One of the midwives commented "Oh, I thought you'd had a boy!" when she clapped eyes on him in it.

TheWoollybacksWife · 14/05/2018 11:50

I'm just about to place a Woolwarehouse order. What do you think of
Aster
Bluebell
Duck Egg
Empire
Petrol
Storm Blue
Teal
Denim
Lapis
Lobelia
as a colour choice? I'm working on an overtly masculine colour scheme or would you prefer one in pinks/purples?

bookbook · 14/05/2018 12:09

Looks good Woolly - how about a bit of parchment too?

TheWoollybacksWife · 14/05/2018 12:12

Good shout book. I've got a parchment in my stash.

MrsHathaway · 14/05/2018 12:19

I reckon this would be just about under 2kg Wink Wink

at gender expectations in general, but I guess it's a pretty low philosophical priority for children living in poverty with sky high cancer rates.

My go-to for new babies is rainbows (red to blue). There's a good rainbow subset from Vibrant Riot, and a slightly subtler version in Spiced (deep red purple to deep green). Pastels are very nice for Instagram but not very stimulating for smalls!

SoupDragon · 14/05/2018 12:29

Given the colour sort they did that resulted in my kit, I think they’ve had more than enough gin.

MadisonAvenue · 14/05/2018 12:59

😂

Spindelina · 14/05/2018 13:02

I did a simple ish rainbow this year, with the intention of it being gender-neutral. But my heart wasn’t completely in it, if I’m honest. Not so much the colours, but the lack of pattern / complexity / spangliness (basically, I have no taste Grin). Thinking I might do something tessalated / Moroccan tile ish this year.

My DD (5) is very much into pink spangly, but more the fuchsia than the pastel end. That started when she was at nursery - her friend a year older declared her favourite colour to be pink, and that was that.

DS is too young to tell, but he wears quite a lot of DDs hand-me-downs!

TheWoollybacksWife · 14/05/2018 13:13

I did a tessellated mystical lanterns blanket for a friend's DD a couple of years ago. It was hard work for someone like me - I struggle with random and I had to sew it together when I'm a lazy old trout who much prefers join-as-you-go. It looked fab though, even if I do say so myself Grin

Fab and not just saying yourself!

I usually c2c for baby blankets so there aren't any dangerous fiddly bits. Pram blankets are so small there isn't a lot of scope for Spin brilliance.
