You find us busily setting up a new home for our wonderful project. Will be making a special cosy corner for Soupy's poor blind cat - recently blinded by fiesta and her very bright blanket kit Gin

As has been since the first year, this has been an astonishing team effort, folk never fail to amaze. THANK YOU! x

Our first project thread is here.... That was the one where we frantically made SQUARES and some folk made whole blankets, there was a lot of gin and the word characterful was used a lot Grin

On the last thread we reached the dizzying heights of 64/100 absolutely gorgeous finished blankets, so here's hoping this thread sees us through to target...

Ooooo, and this will be the thread where we share the Early Bird 2019 info if anyone has been inspired or just wants to get ahead! Thanks

The photo is from last year, tis the wonderful group who came to Portsmouth.

Cracking on then Grin

Whole blanket. No idea what a while blanlet is.

DropZoneOne · 12/05/2018 12:59

Put me down for a whole blanket ... and I'll know by February whether I can manage two.

TheHatOfDoom · 12/05/2018 13:04

I started squares in January this year and working somewhat inconsistently managed enough for half a blanket. So I reckon put me down (very tentatively) for a whole blanket for 2019 and we shall see.

PurpleFrog · 12/05/2018 14:07

I’ll do a whole blanket again. I did most of mine this year over the Christmas holidays then it lay dormant for a number of weeks before I plucked up the courage to tackle the peskies and do the border.

MrsJonesAndMe · 12/05/2018 15:42

If I can successfully do the Snug Hug I have just started, then I'd love to make one! 17/80 squares completed and I've never joined squares or done a border - what could possibly go wrong??? Blush

Spindelina · 12/05/2018 17:48

K&P can I ask you what makes a blanket not gender-neutral?

Pink? How much pink?
Floral? How many flowers?
Anything else?

I’m guessing it’s pretty hard to make one too masculine, right?

(Not having a feminist rant, in case it comes over that way! Genuinely want to know what to do / avoid.)

MrsHathaway · 12/05/2018 17:59

Am neither K nor P.

Previous explanations have very tactfully suggested that the children come from more traditional / less liberal communities than the UK, with more rigid ideas of gender expression.

Spindelina · 12/05/2018 18:55

Yeah, I’m wondering how rigid. If I do a blue and green blanket, will a few flowers in the design render it too feminine? Just wondering what’s in and what’s out. Where’s the line?

(“Line” is too strong a word. Vague brush stroke.)

MrsHathaway · 12/05/2018 19:15

Tbh I've read it as "no pink for boys" without worrying about flowers etc but I don't tend to go in for highly elaborate squares so would have skimmed over the relevant details.

Spindelina · 12/05/2018 19:29

You haven’t seen the snugs blanket I’m making. It’s got quite a lot of pomegranate and fuchsia in it, and I’ve gone for a more is more approach when it comes to pattern Blush. I need to tone it down a bit!

MrsHathaway · 12/05/2018 19:53

Sounds AMAZING.

TheWoollybacksWife · 12/05/2018 20:04

I'm up for a whole blanket but would love some help with colour choices as I'm rubbish Grin

Spindelina · 12/05/2018 20:04

Well, it’s patterned at the very least.

bookbook · 12/05/2018 20:57

It certainly makes you think!
Spin - your blankets are always sumptuous .:)
A lot of the new yarn cakes are gender neutral - usually a cream and grey with an accent colour of blue/green or yellow
I'm thinking rainbow colours in truth. As there are 20 squares, 5 colours in variations of pattern is probably the way I will go -
maybe lipstick /saffron/kelly green / lapis/emperor though what joining colour is anyones guess!
and if I get to do a second, same sort of idea -
I fancy using parchment, pistachio and duck egg, with maybe a darker accent colour thrown in , but I do like to put the balls of wool on a white background and moving them around to see how I like them :)

PurpleFrog · 12/05/2018 21:32

Remember, if you are doing a whole blanket it doesn’t have to be squares! If you do stripes you don’t have to join anything at the end. Grin

WitchDancer · 13/05/2018 08:32

Morning all. It took a while to find you after that pink 😂

TwitterQueen1 · 13/05/2018 08:37

This is really useful info - thanks for asking the q Spin. I hadn't realised the subtle niceties of colour schemes for boys. I will ensure my next purchases do not include pink of any shade Smile

SoupDragon · 13/05/2018 08:58

If you do stripes you don’t have to join anything at the end.

But there will be a lot of peskies!

PurpleFrog · 13/05/2018 15:15

But there will be a lot of peskies!

Totally dependent on the width of the stripes! Grin

MadisonAvenue · 13/05/2018 21:59

Im thinking of stripes in blues and greens I'll get my yarn pegs out over the next couple of days and work out a colour scheme.

I have a Fiesta coloured nose and chest! I got sunburnt at the football in Manchester (don't believe anyone who says it rains all the time there).

MrsHathaway · 13/05/2018 22:58

Taking a break from Chernobs to get closer to completing this Kinship (also attached blooming cat who does love a spread-out WIP!). No pink or blue, only half a ball of purple, two actual flowers. And yet it doesn't feel appropriate for a traditional boy Confused

My DCs' baby blankets are in limited palettes: DC1 is fire so red/orange/gold; DC2 is water so blue/green; and DC3 is earth so brown (ranging from milky coffee to chocolate). I wonder whether I associate boys with limited palettes and girls with more variety and subtler colour grades?

I have 2 DD's , and one is all pink and girly, the other not pink - loves jewel greens/purples/reds. Its not changed through them growing up to womanhood either . But I also have a DH who has always loved wearing pink shirts and jumpers, so it is not simple at all ! DGS at 5 loves stars on his clothes , so may do a bit of that as decoration :)

bookbook · 13/05/2018 23:06

MrsH - lovely there
Madison - hope you are not too uncomfortable - sunburn isn't nice

SoupDragon · 14/05/2018 09:49

I’ll be dropping my parcel off with MyHermes later today. :)

MadisonAvenue · 14/05/2018 09:52

MrsH that is so lovely!

I think I do the same re boys colours. It probably comes from having two boys myself and trying to find clothes in shops when they were younger which weren't various shades of blue, beige or khaki. The colour range was always so limited yet there would be every colour under the sun for girls.

I've never been pink and girly Grin

book it's not sore thankfully, just rather glowy. Put it this way, I didn't need blusher this morning [embarrassed] The weather caught me unawares as the forecast was for 15c, cloudy with sunny spells - it's was a few degrees higher and there wasn't a cloud in the sky and of course sitting there for 90+ minutes watching the match meant that there was nowhere to move to. The forecast was pretty much the same when we were last there 3 weeks ago and we ended up chilled to the bone and soaked to the skin!
