Welcome to our second thread supporting our Chernobyl project 2017, the end of the first one crept up on us!

For the last three years we have been making warm, comforting Little Hugs for Belarusian teenagers and children visiting the UK for recuperative holidays during the summer with the fabulous charity the Chernobyl Children's Project and Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline. Photos from previous projects can be found here..

Each year these marvellous charities bring children who live in the most contaminated area near the Chernobyl reactor over to the UK. In summer, when the dust causes radiation levels to rise, it becomes even more important for as many children as possible to leave their contaminated homeland for a few weeks of fresh air and clean food. The rates of childhood cancer are very high, the most common cancers being thyroid and leukemia. Coming to the UK for a four week break increases their immunity against the awful disease when they return home. Often these children are in remission. Sadly though there is a high chance of these children falling ill again. They all suffer living in such difficult conditions and with very little.

Last year 36 children, teens and their interpreters went home with a beautiful Woolly Hug. This year we are keen to help even more groups, so Liverpool, Gloucester/Leeds (same Leeds group but this year spending 2 weeks at each location) Portsmouth and Helpston, Northampton.

That is about 70+ blankets!! shock Gin

With your help we know we can do this

Gin Gin

Please do join us, here’s how..

Crafting Information

  • We would like 12" squares in bright and cheery Stylecraft Special DK colours.
  • PLEASE AVOID USING black, bright green, bright pink, browns, greys, citron, sunshine, fiesta, jaffa and any pale pastels, white or cream for practical reasons. This will help squares fit together more easily.
  • Make squares in a neutral colour theme, or more specifically for a boy or girl. As much as we don’t like to think of colour as being gender specific, these children may.
  • We will be happy to accept 6" squares if making a 12" one feels too much.
  • Crochet or knitted, 4mm hook or needles. Single colour, mixed colour, simple, complex.
  • No blocking and please sew in pesky ends.
  • If needed, we can supply yarn. Let us know if we can send to you.
  • Posting of squares please to the South Coast address, PM if you need it. star

If you think you’d like to make a whole blanket that is WONDERFUL, but please contact us first. We will be asking for gender neutral blankets which are 48 inches by 60m, but would just like to chat to you first, thank you!

Supporting with funds
If anyone would like to donate funds to support this, we would be so grateful. Please PM us for the donation info. Thank you xx

Can anyone help with extras?
There are a few extras which we will be collecting too alongside squares, items which really help, if you would like to add in any of these we would love to receive them for the children, thank you, bless you.

Underwear aged 10 plus. New only

  • Adult size socks (one size fits all) new
  • Toothbrushes, single packed please
  • Hairbrushes
  • Toiletries, toothpaste, shower gel, shampoo etc, but not bars of soap please.
  • Sanitary Towels
  • Plasters
  • Vitamins, please check suitable for 10 years+
  • Any little luxuries that teens might love, eg hair clips, make up bits, stickers etc.

If you would like to add 50p in when you post squares for ice creams that would be so kind, we will split any money we receive between the groups.

Last posting of squares (plus whole blankets) and any extras is Saturday 8th April

No later please as we have to get on and sort at the end of that following week. Thank you. The rush will be on as the first group, Portsmouth arrive in May.

What a big ask! Good grief!

But the fabulous Woolly Hug crew never fail to amaze, last year was an astonishing team effort, as the photo shows, we know that together we can do this.

On behalf of these children and their families, a huge THANK YOU.
Actually, thank you doesn't really come close.

Us xxx

Sorry, nominated not voted. Doh!

MrsHathaway · 22/03/2017 22:53

Who am I kidding, no one on this thread understands the concept of buying one or two balls

One or two balls boxes.

Fixed for you.

DoubleR · 22/03/2017 23:02

Hooray, I've finished the (slightly too large) 12 inch square I've been working on thanks to TheWoollybacksWife sending me some extra green Grin So many beautiful squares and blankets on these threads I'm embarrassed to show my very amateur efforts but I will anyway.

Looking very good RR

DoubleR · 22/03/2017 23:08

Thanks Smile it's more square than it looks in the picture.

DropZoneOne · 22/03/2017 23:20

Evening!

Managed to crochet 4 x 6" squares whilst on the train to the Midlands today, am hoping I can work out how to fit them together to save a job for the construction crew. I can knock out simple granny's pretty quickly now, so as we're on a tight deadline that's what I shall stick with for the next week or so.

Witch very pretty! what colours did you use?

MrsD I love that green on the top right, I don't think I have one that colour, what is that?

Polter wow, just wow, that's a stunning blanket

Malcom I'd also be in the market for a set of pegs if you want to recoup some of the money spent on yarn ;-)

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 23/03/2017 00:10

bookbook I'm not having Norks on! 🙁 😁 The very reason I'm crocheting is because I'm so bloody slow at knitting. Despite being bloody slow at crocheting too, it's still faster than my knitting 😂

Drops how long was your train journey? I can't think of any train trip to Manchester that would give me enough time to crochet 4 squares. Not unless it was one of those 1am trains that stops for 6 hours en route.

RR it looks good.

Witchy I bet that's really Vibrant! Excellent!

Drop on my screen it's Aspen (that MrsD bought).

TheWoollybacksWife · 23/03/2017 00:19

Lovely square RR

Thank you for putting me right MrsH - I wonder if I can buy shares in Wool Warehouse. Us Woolly Huggers would ensure decent dividends.

MrsDilligaf · 23/03/2017 07:32

Drop, Chipping is spot on - it's Aspen.it's absolutely beautiful. It's snuggled next to Turquoise in my wool bag and together they look fab.

And yes....you are all enablers.

SpaghettiMoon · 23/03/2017 07:32

You can buy a full set of yarn pegs here www.getknitted.com/acatalog/Stylecraft_Special_DK.html Grin

Double that's a beautiful square. Have faith in your abilities!

Chipping it's Shrimp, Lipstick, and erm, erm, erm what's it called..... oh bother, it's downstairs.... was it boysenberry? 7 rows of each colour plus an extra little bit Confused

bookbook · 23/03/2017 09:46

Morning!
I was only teasing Chipping - I suspect Norks thought it was knitting , it's easy done - I did the same thing with RR -and the lovely green one
Woolly - how is the neck and shoulder? bearing up I hope
I have been good and only ordered 12 a few balls of wool- no addiction here at all !
Well, I finished a 12" granny yesterady, in the new colours - am a bit meurgh about it - showed it to DH and said it looked like something from wartime, so I got him to pick out the next set of colours. Got started last night, decided to do an extra round in the middle ( a bit off piste) and it all went horribly woggly and would not stay flat - serves me right for thinking I could do something a bit different So frogged it back to the middle round and started again , so looking better. I like to do 3 or 4 with the same 3 colours , just to help the construction crew, so I will pop up a picture later so we can have a verdict :)

MadisonAvenue · 23/03/2017 10:03

Good morning all! The dog's been walked/run/squelched through the mud, the house has been hoovered (all three floors, go me!) so now I think I should reward myself with a nice mug of coffee and an hour of crochet...it'll take my mind off the link that Spaghetti posted. Probably.

DoubleR · 23/03/2017 10:15

Thanks for the encouragement Smile I'm starting one in pomegranate that I got for Candy's Hugs, I'm hoping it's ok to use that colour for this project? Woolly sympathies for your shoulder, I'm recovering from brachial neuritis in my right shoulder, so I know how painful it can be. Looking forward to the craft sale today. Brew

Still laughing. You're an advertisers wet dream 😊

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 23/03/2017 10:54

bookbook. I know you were, hence the 😬. 💐 Trust me, I'm nowhere near that sensitive 😊 Good shopping! Was it all SSDK or some fir Little Hugs too?

WBW. Wouldn't it be great if we could have some kind of Wool Warehouse of our own & cut out the middle man (sorry Woolwarehouse), plus a deal with a kindly courier company that does WH deliveries for free, in return for advertising.

Madison. That's all a bit energetic! You've definitely earned some sitting down crocheting time! 😊

RR. Pomegranate is totally fine for this project 😊 The only colours that aren't, are the kind of fluro colours (jaffa, fiesta, citron, the two actually called bright green and bright pink) whites/creams/very pale colours (kids & pale colours, not a good mix!!) and any anything too dull - grey, black, brown etc...but I've seen some whole blankets (for previous projects) in those colours & they look fab - just not good for matching I guess.

Is that today RR. Blimey it's come around fast. I'll just go and make Brew and have a look! Thanks for the reminder 😊

SpiralArchitect · 23/03/2017 11:13

Lovely squares all!

K&P I am fretting - have my squares arrived yet???? They were posted to the South Coast on Monday, first class...

Okkitokkiunga · 23/03/2017 11:32

Hello everyone. I have been following you all on FB and on MN for a while and think you're all fab. I haven't crocheted a thing in my life, but I am eagerly awaiting delivery of a hook and wool so I can have a go and join you. I am impatiently drumming my fingers looking at all your fabulous squares - and Polters blanket. That is fantastic.

Treasures · 23/03/2017 12:16

Okkitok I learnt how to crochet just last Wednesday and completed my 20th 6-inch square last night! Just proves it's not as hard as it looks and once you figure it out, it all comes together really quickly. I never, ever thought I would say that, or even be able to do crochet at all. Hope your hook and wool arrive quickly!

bookbook · 23/03/2017 12:16

Just clicked on the auction site for the Spring Crafts - its live - I suspect I am not going to win the yarn pegs - its frantic! Grin

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 23/03/2017 12:20

Okki. Welcome 😊💐

Spiral I think they're probably snowed under with arrivals & with the sale on it's probably a bit mad at HQ's! Hopefully someone can reassure you soon 😊

bookbook I was just coming to link to the auction page, I probably shouldn't now, you don't need MORE competition! 😳😖 I bet they could have auctioned loads of those sets.

Treasures · 23/03/2017 12:45

Here are my first 20 little wonky squares.
Pomegranate, Sherbet, Saffron and Plum.
(The round-ish looking one should go square when blocked)
Hopefully will go in the post today IF I can get online postage printed - printer's playing up.

Now I need to order some more wool as these colours are all I have - I can only really afford another 2 for the moment, any suggestions that will go well with these 4?

MadisonAvenue · 23/03/2017 12:49

Okki welcome! Crochet seemed a bit daunting at the start but suddenly it all clicked into place!

Treasures they all look wonderful!

book I looked too and I'm in awe of the talent of the people who've donated their work.

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 23/03/2017 13:02

Treasures. Are you buying yarn locally or ordering online?

Colours. I'm crap, actually CRAP, with colours, so you might want to ignore me, but I think Turquoise & Shrimp would be good. Or Meadow & Lavender. Or Turquoise & Grass Green.

All of those are suitable for Candy's Hugs too, which is a project you're sure to love as well...after this frantic one 😊
