Welcome to our second thread supporting our Chernobyl project 2017, the end of the first one crept up on us!

For the last three years we have been making warm, comforting Little Hugs for Belarusian teenagers and children visiting the UK for recuperative holidays during the summer with the fabulous charity the Chernobyl Children's Project and Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline. Photos from previous projects can be found here..

Each year these marvellous charities bring children who live in the most contaminated area near the Chernobyl reactor over to the UK. In summer, when the dust causes radiation levels to rise, it becomes even more important for as many children as possible to leave their contaminated homeland for a few weeks of fresh air and clean food. The rates of childhood cancer are very high, the most common cancers being thyroid and leukemia. Coming to the UK for a four week break increases their immunity against the awful disease when they return home. Often these children are in remission. Sadly though there is a high chance of these children falling ill again. They all suffer living in such difficult conditions and with very little.

Last year 36 children, teens and their interpreters went home with a beautiful Woolly Hug. This year we are keen to help even more groups, so Liverpool, Gloucester/Leeds (same Leeds group but this year spending 2 weeks at each location) Portsmouth and Helpston, Northampton.

That is about 70+ blankets!! shock Gin

With your help we know we can do this

Gin Gin

Please do join us, here’s how..

Crafting Information

  • We would like 12" squares in bright and cheery Stylecraft Special DK colours.
  • PLEASE AVOID USING black, bright green, bright pink, browns, greys, citron, sunshine, fiesta, jaffa and any pale pastels, white or cream for practical reasons. This will help squares fit together more easily.
  • Make squares in a neutral colour theme, or more specifically for a boy or girl. As much as we don’t like to think of colour as being gender specific, these children may.
  • We will be happy to accept 6" squares if making a 12" one feels too much.
  • Crochet or knitted, 4mm hook or needles. Single colour, mixed colour, simple, complex.
  • No blocking and please sew in pesky ends.
  • If needed, we can supply yarn. Let us know if we can send to you.
  • Posting of squares please to the South Coast address, PM if you need it. star

If you think you’d like to make a whole blanket that is WONDERFUL, but please contact us first. We will be asking for gender neutral blankets which are 48 inches by 60m, but would just like to chat to you first, thank you!

Supporting with funds
If anyone would like to donate funds to support this, we would be so grateful. Please PM us for the donation info. Thank you xx

Can anyone help with extras?
There are a few extras which we will be collecting too alongside squares, items which really help, if you would like to add in any of these we would love to receive them for the children, thank you, bless you.

Underwear aged 10 plus. New only

  • Adult size socks (one size fits all) new
  • Toothbrushes, single packed please
  • Hairbrushes
  • Toiletries, toothpaste, shower gel, shampoo etc, but not bars of soap please.
  • Sanitary Towels
  • Plasters
  • Vitamins, please check suitable for 10 years+
  • Any little luxuries that teens might love, eg hair clips, make up bits, stickers etc.

If you would like to add 50p in when you post squares for ice creams that would be so kind, we will split any money we receive between the groups.

Last posting of squares (plus whole blankets) and any extras is Saturday 8th April

No later please as we have to get on and sort at the end of that following week. Thank you. The rush will be on as the first group, Portsmouth arrive in May.

What a big ask! Good grief!

But the fabulous Woolly Hug crew never fail to amaze, last year was an astonishing team effort, as the photo shows, we know that together we can do this.

On behalf of these children and their families, a huge THANK YOU.
Actually, thank you doesn't really come close.

Us xxx

I am making a blanket. I have a thing about giving a blanket to anyone off to uni. When DH and I were students our digs were so cold they had ice on the inside of the windows. So when DD1 and her closest friends went off I made them all blankets. Needless to say the standard of accommodation has improved and they went from being a necessity to looking good draped on their beds. Grin

This year DD2 and her friends are off this year. DD2's is done and I'm working on the first of 4 for her friends. Shock thank goodness for free delivery and discount codes at wool warehouse Smile

SoupDragon · 01/05/2017 18:45

I'm meant to be making a blanket for DS1 a he's off to uni this year [wail]

Okkitokkiunga · 01/05/2017 19:03

Hi all. Just diving in to ask for advice. I have finished a child's blanket but I am stuck on colour for the edge. I will do one round of saffron, but then not sure whether to do more? It's currently approx 24" by 28". In case pic not clear, other colours are Spice and Pomegranate.

bookbook · 01/05/2017 19:20

oooh , thats nice Okki* - :) - personally I would do two rows of saffron , but any of them would look good. I would do the first saffron row and see what you think!

TheWoollybacksWife · 01/05/2017 19:23

I'd go saffron, spice, saffron then finish with pomegranate - possibly using some sort of picot stitch for the last row.

Spindelina · 01/05/2017 19:31

I'm hopeless with colour, so won't add anything to that. But I will say: Okki, that looks great! And I'd never have put pomegranate with the other two but it looks great!

TheoriginalLEM · 01/05/2017 20:03

is thete a new thread?

Jux · 02/05/2017 01:06

That's a really pretty colour combo, Okki. I would do the edge in red.

book, can you do the photo for me? I am far too old for YouTube --having played on it in its infancy, it has grown up and run away to uni ("gorn, gorn. And never called me mother." as they say Grin.)

bookbook · 02/05/2017 06:55

Jux - quick dip in ( DGS due soon)
do you mean your squares? -I put up your photo from fb straight after your last post , ( about 16.14 yesterday ) but if you can't find it, I will pop it on again :)

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 02/05/2017 09:48

Soup. DS1 off to Uni? Bloody hell, where is the time going?!

Bear. Your Mum is definitely a star isn't she! I'm glad you managed to get such a good nights sleep. Tell Bearcub Aunty Chipping said there's to be NO messing around tonight, or else! else...hmmm...cuddles?! I'd love to know what was going through her mind after they removed her brace, it must have felt so amazing to be 'free' 😊

Spindelina. I'm still planning the retreat, for sure!

Okki. I love your blanket. It looks like a minature though - very cool photo. What is it lying on? I'd do a round in sunflower (to create an even edge) then pomegranate.

Woolly. You have to be one of the loveliest people I know 😊🌷. I hope your DD's appreciate that! One of those blankets is on my list, but I'm not sure I'll let anyone touch it, let alone give it away 😂

SoupDragon · 02/05/2017 09:59

BabyDragon is off to secondary school too and that is just plain wrong. She's still a baby, surely!

bookbook · 02/05/2017 19:03

Hope you managed another good nights sleep Bear - its amazing how much difference it can make :)
Woolly - blanket maker extraordinaire Grin ( I am the baby cardigan/ jacket maker here - somewhat smaller.....)
Shall I pop on more photos - I think we are up to 64 !

Okkitokkiunga · 02/05/2017 21:39

Alpha! I'm back from the abyss of concentrating solely on my blanket. I took book's advice and I only did one round of saffron. It looked symmetrical and as I am a sucker for symmetry (and alliteration), I stopped. I also think I'm cured of liking peskies. ChippingIn it's not the biggest of blankets - approx 23" x 26" unstretched, but it had about 400 peskies.........:

I still have to spot one of my squares but I do recognise some of the ones who have posted pictures on this thread, which I am also excited about.

Woolly the Ogees are lovely and I e added them to my list of things to try. I am planning a blanket for my DD(10) at the moment, so not quite Uni age just yet but agree with Soup about time. My PFB will be off to secondary in a year. Thankfully DD still has some way to go.

Bear Rhubard and Ginger Gin sounds fab - did you make it or buy it. I am rather fond of gin Grin. Hope you've had more lovely sleep and that Baby Bear is enjoying being brave free. I had dislocated hips @birth - I am now 42 and unfit but my party trick is the splits.

And finally (sorry for the essay), I've started a thread asking for advice on how to join a flower to a square. I didn't want to fill up this thread.

Okkitokkiunga · 02/05/2017 21:42

I need to wear my glasses. Sorry for all the typos!!!'

Aloha and not Alpha.
My DS and not DD is a long way off secondary
BabyBear Brace free and not brave free.

NormansNipple · 03/05/2017 00:10

Okki lovely blanket! You are very patient to make all those small squares and join them, and the 400 peskies!

Woolly you are so lovely making all those blankets! Your DD's and their friends are very lucky. I'm making myself an Attic24 hydrangea blanket at the moment. How is your shoulder doing?

QC is my only baby and he's 2 years old. As he's a cat and highly unlikely to go to uni he doesn't need a blanket. However, I'm feeling guilty about all the things I'm crocheting for other people so I'm thinking of making him a mini blanket. I'll put it on his throne the footstool for him.

NormansNipple · 03/05/2017 00:14

@Knotty&Pistey I think we need another thread!

TheWoollybacksWife · 03/05/2017 09:13

Chipping you made me Blush. How lovely are you?

Okki my baby is off to secondary in a year too. See you on the 1st March thread next year (unless you live in Scotland in which case you have a far less stressful more civilised way of handling these things)

Book I have a huge extended family and there is always a baby or two cooking away somewhere. I can be relied on for a cardigan and a blanket. I'm under 50 (just) and I already have a great-great nephew so it is relentless. Big family, lots of older siblings. Two of my sisters have grandchildren older than my youngest Confused

Norm the shoulder is still sore. No results from the x-ray yet (6 weeks and counting) and I have a scan later this month. I cried over the receptionist at the doctors. Luckily my family are Stars and they are making sure life isn't going to wrack and ruin around me. TBH it's cramping my crochet style and I'd like it to bugger off now, please.

Re the sorting Susan we don't take pics of sorting and ask for thoughts, it would be too much, everyone's opinion is definitely valid, but folk like different things, it would get too complicated and I don't think we'd ever get there. The important thing for us is that all squares are used and each of the 70 blankets is balanced in a similar way, we don't want some blankets to be more patterned than others, we want the mix of colours on each to look fabulous, so it is done with care, why it takes so long!

Thank you to the folk offering more squares, we will know next Friday exactly where we are, really appreciate it though.

Think we are up to blanket 64!
