Welcome to our second thread supporting our Chernobyl project 2017, the end of the first one crept up on us!

For the last three years we have been making warm, comforting Little Hugs for Belarusian teenagers and children visiting the UK for recuperative holidays during the summer with the fabulous charity the Chernobyl Children's Project and Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline. Photos from previous projects can be found here..

Each year these marvellous charities bring children who live in the most contaminated area near the Chernobyl reactor over to the UK. In summer, when the dust causes radiation levels to rise, it becomes even more important for as many children as possible to leave their contaminated homeland for a few weeks of fresh air and clean food. The rates of childhood cancer are very high, the most common cancers being thyroid and leukemia. Coming to the UK for a four week break increases their immunity against the awful disease when they return home. Often these children are in remission. Sadly though there is a high chance of these children falling ill again. They all suffer living in such difficult conditions and with very little.

Last year 36 children, teens and their interpreters went home with a beautiful Woolly Hug. This year we are keen to help even more groups, so Liverpool, Gloucester/Leeds (same Leeds group but this year spending 2 weeks at each location) Portsmouth and Helpston, Northampton.

That is about 70+ blankets!! shock Gin

With your help we know we can do this

Gin Gin

Please do join us, here’s how..

Crafting Information

  • We would like 12" squares in bright and cheery Stylecraft Special DK colours.
  • PLEASE AVOID USING black, bright green, bright pink, browns, greys, citron, sunshine, fiesta, jaffa and any pale pastels, white or cream for practical reasons. This will help squares fit together more easily.
  • Make squares in a neutral colour theme, or more specifically for a boy or girl. As much as we don’t like to think of colour as being gender specific, these children may.
  • We will be happy to accept 6" squares if making a 12" one feels too much.
  • Crochet or knitted, 4mm hook or needles. Single colour, mixed colour, simple, complex.
  • No blocking and please sew in pesky ends.
  • If needed, we can supply yarn. Let us know if we can send to you.
  • Posting of squares please to the South Coast address, PM if you need it. star

If you think you’d like to make a whole blanket that is WONDERFUL, but please contact us first. We will be asking for gender neutral blankets which are 48 inches by 60m, but would just like to chat to you first, thank you!

Supporting with funds
If anyone would like to donate funds to support this, we would be so grateful. Please PM us for the donation info. Thank you xx

Can anyone help with extras?
There are a few extras which we will be collecting too alongside squares, items which really help, if you would like to add in any of these we would love to receive them for the children, thank you, bless you.

Underwear aged 10 plus. New only

  • Adult size socks (one size fits all) new
  • Toothbrushes, single packed please
  • Hairbrushes
  • Toiletries, toothpaste, shower gel, shampoo etc, but not bars of soap please.
  • Sanitary Towels
  • Plasters
  • Vitamins, please check suitable for 10 years+
  • Any little luxuries that teens might love, eg hair clips, make up bits, stickers etc.

If you would like to add 50p in when you post squares for ice creams that would be so kind, we will split any money we receive between the groups.

Last posting of squares (plus whole blankets) and any extras is Saturday 8th April

No later please as we have to get on and sort at the end of that following week. Thank you. The rush will be on as the first group, Portsmouth arrive in May.

What a big ask! Good grief!

But the fabulous Woolly Hug crew never fail to amaze, last year was an astonishing team effort, as the photo shows, we know that together we can do this.

On behalf of these children and their families, a huge THANK YOU.
Actually, thank you doesn't really come close.

Us xxx

LEM I can do a plain granny quicker than c2c but partly because I still need to check tutorials for c2c, it's not natural yet. I prefer the cosiness of a c2c though.

book I prefer the one on the left, I do like pinks and purples for looking warm. I've mustard myself and it's an odd colour, thought it would be more, well, mustard 😂

bookbook · 23/03/2017 19:58

know what you mean about the mustard Drop - chose it online, and thought it would be a bit more goldy/yellow looking!

TheWoollybacksWife · 23/03/2017 20:19

I ended up taking my ball of mustard back to the shop. It looked like the insipid love child of gold and lime Grin

bookbook · 23/03/2017 20:25

yep - I keep looking at it thinking mmmmm Grin

VittysCardigan · 23/03/2017 20:28

I used it on these next to gold - it is definitely more green than mustard

bookbook · 23/03/2017 20:34

that looks lovely! - the only yellow I have is saffron , may have a look. I have started a c2c in magenta to ease my eyes!

VittysCardigan · 23/03/2017 20:48

I used the same colours but reversed the order IYSWIM so, saffron, spice, tomato, gold, mustard, meadow, cypress

NormansNipple · 23/03/2017 21:11

LEM in theory granny squares should be quicker as they have less stitches. I'm finding c2c really fast but haven't done a granny square for a while so I might just have sped up. Maybe it depends which you prefer, or which you have done more of recently. In other words, I don't know Grin

TheoriginalLEM · 23/03/2017 22:05
Grin
IAmNotAUserNumber · 23/03/2017 22:46

Treasure the empire is a brighter, more shiny blue than the petrol - the petrol is more Matt, if that makes sense?

IAmNotAUserNumber · 23/03/2017 22:51

bookbook I really like that green in the one on the right - definitely lifts it - was that the cypress green you weren't sure about?

IAmNotAUserNumber · 23/03/2017 22:52

Treasure - your output so far is very impressive, they look lovely

bookbook · 23/03/2017 22:54

yes it is IAm - love the green, just wasn't sure it was 'right' :)

MalcolmTuckersOmniShambles · 23/03/2017 22:56

Drooling at all of this yarn talk!!!

I am also mightily annoyed with myself for somehow missing out the four colours that Chipping pointed out in my yarn pegs. So far I have resisted buying them from Wool Warehouse although they may already be in my basket waiting!

And AAAAARRRRRRGGGGGHHHHHHH!!!! I'm worried I may have bitten off more than I can chew with the cosy stripe blanket.

Mental note to self: measure the flipping chain BEFORE you start crocheting the rows in future!!!! It didn't dawn on me until a couple of hours ago that I should probably check that it was as wide as it should be, rather than simply taking it for granted that it would be if I followed the pattern. I never considered myself a tight hooker (ooh-er!) but I was over 20cm short!!! 😩

So I've had to frog it back and chain some more. Turns out I need 227 stitches instead of 198 to get to around 120cm wide. 😡😡😡

Anyway, here is my rather woeful-looking evening's effort.

I am going to see how I get on in the next couple of days, if progress doesn't pick up, I may ditch the blanket and go back to squares so I can at least get something in before the deadline!

bookbook · 23/03/2017 23:07

oh no Malcolm - thats heartbreaking

MadisonAvenue · 23/03/2017 23:34

Oh Malcolm what a shame. I've had times though when nothing seems to go right and everything I do needs frogging, so I just go back to basic squares for a bit and that seems to help.

Bloody knew that there had to be a reason why my husband lined up a load of Green Day videos on YouTube on the TV tonight. I'm there in my happy place - Billie Joe Armstrong on the telly while I crochet - when he drops it on me that his mother is coming to stay in a couple of weeks Hmm

MrsHathaway · 24/03/2017 00:48

I have learned how to do a foundation dc which ought to sort out some of my "six inches" issues.

I'm also now totally in love with c2c and have started a baby blanket for a dear friend in the "Spiced" palette because it's for an autumn baby and it will definitely take me that long. Another friend quietly revealed a pgy today so I'll be consulting for colour scheme there too once she safely through her scan, God willing.

In parallel I'm having a break from squares with a construction pack, and I'd like to reiterate that plain squares are just as valuable as complicated for the overall effect, and speedy grannies are easier to join than c2c without a (ch3, sk3, dc) border. I adore construction, particularly the patterns and colours people choose.

MrsHathaway · 24/03/2017 00:49

his mother is coming to stay in a couple of weeks

I misread that as "to stay for a couple of weeks.

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 24/03/2017 02:40

Treasures. Ooops. Sorry. I was trying to help you choose two wisely...😖🤣 Own project? I've totally given up on that notion!

LEM. Life has a terrible habit of getting in the way! #17 is still very impressive!

IAmNot. They sound lovely. Can we have photos? Pretty please 😊 (Shrimp is the lighter one, spice is the darker one)

Okki. I'm an enabler - sorry!

I don't buy it from Hobbycraft as none of the ones around here stock the wool for this project (Stylecraft Special DK.) We have a wool shop a village or two over that does the full range & I order online too. I like Woolwarehouse best - I find their website the easiest to use & their wool comes in niceorganza bags. Wisebadger is good too, lovely to deal with.

I found THIS tutorial really good. If at anytime you are struggling, I found watching a tutorial on the same thing, but by another person really helpful. Just be aware that the UK & the US have different names for the same stitch.

WBW. Is there not one on the auction site? (WofOz keyring). You don't need FB for that. Insipid love child of gold & lime 🤣 Quite a brilliant description of 'mustard'.

Vitty. It's lovely seeing your squares on FB isn't it 😊 Even nicer when you spot them in a blanket. How are the driving lessons going?

Witch. Sorry to hear you're struggling with your mobility, I hope it improves soon 💐

Drop. Yep, that confirms it, I'm clearly as slow as a tortoise! C2017 needs work to send you to Australia 🤣 Roll on payday!

Norman. I'm doing a spiral in shrimp & saffron! Well, to be more accurate, I've started a spiral...

Eek. Too many started, not enough finished!

bookbook. It's hard to say on the screen, but if DH says they're 'wartime colours' it sounds like the go ahead to buy some other colours! 😉

LEM. I don't know, but at a guess I'd say GS as there's less work in it, but I prefer the CTC as it looks & feels more cosy and I like the fact that it decreases where as the GS increases. I don't really do repetitive, so I find both boring to do.

Malcolm. It was only 3 wasn't it? (Jaffa, Spring Green & Citron). [I only pointed it out as you said you realised you'd missed Jaffa & I didn't want you to order that then realise there were two more.] You might as well wait until the three new ones are ready. I still can't see them anywhere, the names don't inspire me though.

Cosy striped blanket... you'll be fine 🌸 I hate to ask, but how much did you do before you measured it? Things seem to grow quite a bit bigger than the chain length.

You can always do it for a Kinship Hug (or yourself!) when the pressure is off.

I know I'm a tight hooker 😉😂

(you forgot to attach the photo x)

Madison. Did you forget to mention to him that that's the exact time you're coming to stay at mine? 😉

MrsH 😂 At sorting out 6" issues, you'll be in high demand!

A CTC spiced baby blanket sounds lovely. How big do you plan to make it? I can't seem to make myself do a 12" in CTC, let alone a whole blanket.

I hope both pregnancies go well 💐💐

MrsH can you explain what you mean about the border on CTC squares. Pretend you're explaining it to a 4 yo 😂
💐 For constructing for us x. (I misread Madison's post too!)

MalcolmTuckersOmniShambles · 24/03/2017 03:45

That's a really good idea, Chipping, I'll wait until the new ones come out and then reward myself with all six (you were right, it was only three I was missing!).

Things grow bigger than the foundation chain, you say?!

It wasn't much that I had to frog back, to be fair, and thank heavens at least I caught it before I'd done more! A definite learning curve for me and a lesson I shan't forget!

MalcolmTuckersOmniShambles · 24/03/2017 04:17

Oh and Chipping:

attic24.typepad.com

New yarn colours on the above link!

NormansNipple · 24/03/2017 05:38

Malcolm I stretched my foundation chain out to meet the measurements. Once I'd done a few stripes they made it bigger and the foundation chain started to curl in, hope that makes sense. By the time I was halfway through it had all settled down though and everything was the right size.

ChippingIn do you have a link to a spiral pattern? I haven't tried one of those yet.

MrsH Flowers for constructing blankets. They always come out looking amazing!

Wh0Kn0wsWhereTheTimeGoes · 24/03/2017 06:54

Does anyone else find holding a C2C square awkward as you work? I love the effect, and the pattern is straightforward enough, but constantly having to lift it to stitch at an angle to start the next square slows me right down and ends up with my arm at an odd angle if I'm not careful. I've done a few 6" which were ok but having just done my first 12" I was glad to get it finished. I agree with MrsH that they are easier to join neatly if they have a border on them, their natural edge is quite uneven.

VittysCardigan · 24/03/2017 07:36

Chipping- I have a lesson this morning. I haven't had one for about a month for various reasons! We were going to do a mock test but not sure if we will now due to the long gap. Thank you for asking Smile

MrsHathaway · 24/03/2017 07:46

This is what I mean about c2c. I've sent some without but I'm going to go round any more.

I'm not sure how big I'm going to go: until it looks right, I guess. It's in stripes of five rounds so a multiple of five Wink and it'll be rectangular rather than square so I have two decisions to make.

Hope everyone has lovely days. I have two meetings Hmm at opposite ends of the working day.
