Welcome to our second thread supporting our Chernobyl project 2017, the end of the first one crept up on us!

For the last three years we have been making warm, comforting Little Hugs for Belarusian teenagers and children visiting the UK for recuperative holidays during the summer with the fabulous charity the Chernobyl Children's Project and Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline. Photos from previous projects can be found here..

Each year these marvellous charities bring children who live in the most contaminated area near the Chernobyl reactor over to the UK. In summer, when the dust causes radiation levels to rise, it becomes even more important for as many children as possible to leave their contaminated homeland for a few weeks of fresh air and clean food. The rates of childhood cancer are very high, the most common cancers being thyroid and leukemia. Coming to the UK for a four week break increases their immunity against the awful disease when they return home. Often these children are in remission. Sadly though there is a high chance of these children falling ill again. They all suffer living in such difficult conditions and with very little.

Last year 36 children, teens and their interpreters went home with a beautiful Woolly Hug. This year we are keen to help even more groups, so Liverpool, Gloucester/Leeds (same Leeds group but this year spending 2 weeks at each location) Portsmouth and Helpston, Northampton.

That is about 70+ blankets!! shock Gin

With your help we know we can do this

Gin Gin

Please do join us, here’s how..

Crafting Information

  • We would like 12" squares in bright and cheery Stylecraft Special DK colours.
  • PLEASE AVOID USING black, bright green, bright pink, browns, greys, citron, sunshine, fiesta, jaffa and any pale pastels, white or cream for practical reasons. This will help squares fit together more easily.
  • Make squares in a neutral colour theme, or more specifically for a boy or girl. As much as we don’t like to think of colour as being gender specific, these children may.
  • We will be happy to accept 6" squares if making a 12" one feels too much.
  • Crochet or knitted, 4mm hook or needles. Single colour, mixed colour, simple, complex.
  • No blocking and please sew in pesky ends.
  • If needed, we can supply yarn. Let us know if we can send to you.
  • Posting of squares please to the South Coast address, PM if you need it. star

If you think you’d like to make a whole blanket that is WONDERFUL, but please contact us first. We will be asking for gender neutral blankets which are 48 inches by 60m, but would just like to chat to you first, thank you!

Supporting with funds
If anyone would like to donate funds to support this, we would be so grateful. Please PM us for the donation info. Thank you xx

Can anyone help with extras?
There are a few extras which we will be collecting too alongside squares, items which really help, if you would like to add in any of these we would love to receive them for the children, thank you, bless you.

Underwear aged 10 plus. New only

  • Adult size socks (one size fits all) new
  • Toothbrushes, single packed please
  • Hairbrushes
  • Toiletries, toothpaste, shower gel, shampoo etc, but not bars of soap please.
  • Sanitary Towels
  • Plasters
  • Vitamins, please check suitable for 10 years+
  • Any little luxuries that teens might love, eg hair clips, make up bits, stickers etc.

If you would like to add 50p in when you post squares for ice creams that would be so kind, we will split any money we receive between the groups.

Last posting of squares (plus whole blankets) and any extras is Saturday 8th April

No later please as we have to get on and sort at the end of that following week. Thank you. The rush will be on as the first group, Portsmouth arrive in May.

What a big ask! Good grief!

But the fabulous Woolly Hug crew never fail to amaze, last year was an astonishing team effort, as the photo shows, we know that together we can do this.

On behalf of these children and their families, a huge THANK YOU.
Actually, thank you doesn't really come close.

Us xxx

Chipping I'm buying online. Yes I'm also crap with colours so I was pleasantly surprised that these 4 went quite well together when they arrived Grin
I like the idea of Meadow I think. I do prefer bright colours in general, but I like muted greens.

Treasures · 23/03/2017 13:34

Forgot to add: yes I probably will get involved with Candy's after this. Zombie was such a shiny star and I love that she wanted to leave Candy's Hugs as a legacy.

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 23/03/2017 13:46

It's a shame you missed the free postage deal at the weekend 😖. I resent paying postage when I could have yarn instead, so I buy enough to get the free postage, but unfortunately to get it, the order minimum is around £25 (or more) which is pretty steep. It's a shame you can't find a local shop, the yarn tends to be a bit more expensive but no postage.

If you use Woolwarehouse it'll come in a lovely organza bag and if you use the code CHARITY you'll get a 10% discount.

How about Meadow & Turquoise?

Treasures · 23/03/2017 14:02

Oh I do love a discount code!! Thanks for that. What's that darker blue down the side of the pic? I'm liking the look of that one and the shrimp and the turquoise

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 23/03/2017 14:23

Oh I'm a twonk! I put shrimp instead of sherbet! Moose.

Here we have

Pomegranate
Saffron
Plum
Sherbet
Violet
Shrimp

Turquoise
Grass green (lovelier than it looks here)
Empire
Meadow
Petrol
Lime (similar to Meadow but a little lighter & brighter)

Fusia
Lipstick (goes well with yourvexusing colours, except pomegranate)
Magenta.

All Candy's colours too.

Did I see you had pomegranate Treasures ? my favourite blue is Aster, and it goes really nicely with it ( I used sage too ).
Yes, I frantically bought from Deramores this last weekend, as they had free p&p offer on!
Don't forget that you could always ask for a wool donation from K&P

bookbook · 23/03/2017 14:25

x post with Chipping - she has a much better selection

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 23/03/2017 14:40

I love Aster & Sage too. It just depends whether you want the colours to double up for Candys Hugs too or not (or Kinship, Little Hugs...).

Kelly, spice & lavender.

...and with that, sadly, I have to go & collect small people from school, back soon! 😊

The colours look so dreary...try this

Treasures · 23/03/2017 14:50

Thank you both for your help!

See... NOW the problem I'm having is that I'm going to have to buy all sorts of colours when I only planned to buy two Grin Grin

I'm looking at
Meadow (or Lime),
Empire (or Petrol),
Violet
Lipstick
Magenta
Aster
Aspen
Spice...

and then for my own project that I haven't started yet, Merry-Go-Round in Rainbow or Starburst, because OMG that looks stunning!

TheoriginalLEM · 23/03/2017 15:19

GAhhhH life getting in the way, thought I'd go for a full blankets worth but been so busy , have to fetch dd soon but am getting to the end of #17

IAmNotAUserNumber · 23/03/2017 15:32

I've just done 5 striped squares in the following combo's:-
Empire and lipstick
Plum and fuscia
Empire and turquoise
Lavender and violet
Orange (shrimp? The Candy one anyway, not tomato) and saffron

I'm about to start one in orange and petrol.
Boysenberry and lime too.

Okkitokkiunga · 23/03/2017 15:36

Treasures I love all your squares - and you've been doing this a week Wow. Which pattern did you use? My hook arrived this morning, but no wool Sad. I've got plum and denim coming, but I really do quite like the look of all the colours Chippingposted. So I may end up ordering a couple more.

Does anyone buy wool from Hobbycraft?

TheWoollybacksWife · 23/03/2017 16:09

Just been to have a gander at the spring craft sale stuff. I REALLY want the Wizard of Oz key ring. DD2 has just finished playing the lion in her Am Dram group production and she would adore that. I may need to conquer my fear of FB and try to buy it.

VittysCardigan · 23/03/2017 16:09

Have just seen my squares on Facebook- loved making them & can't wait to see them made into blankets with everyone else's - what a fabulous project this is. K&P you are wonderful people!

WitchDancer · 23/03/2017 16:35

Okkita I looked in my local hobby craft and it was shameful with just a couple of half unraveled balls sitting really lonely of the shelf. In other words, no. I get mine from the Wool Warehouse now, particularly as I'm struggling mobility wise at the moment

Treasures · 23/03/2017 16:39

Okkito I used the Basic Granny Square pattern and the Solid Granny Square (Elmer) pattern tutorials on littletinbird.co.uk I can't read a traditionally-written pattern and these ones have photo step-by-steps which I found much easier to understand, being a newbie. As for the round-ish one, I've no idea where I picked that up - I decided I probably wasn't going to make another like that so I didn't save the link. Fingers crossed for your wool delivery tomorrow!

Treasures · 23/03/2017 16:41

Vittys I just had a look at your squares on FB - really vibrant, love them!

VittysCardigan · 23/03/2017 16:49

Thank you Treasures Blush

DropZoneOne · 23/03/2017 17:29

Treasures beautiful squares! I can't help with colour choices, after my initial 4, I ended up buying almost all the candy colours after payday to get the free postage. It's made things worse as I'm split for choice

Chipping south coast via London, so four lots of 1 hour + journeys. Just 6" single colour plain granny so nothing special but I can knock those up without too much effort now. I'm off to Belfast for work on Monday, so that's another hour on the flight and crochet hooks are allowed in hand baggage!

Thanks for confirming the lovely green is Aspen. I can see a need for a whole set of pegs plus another bulk order from WW. Thank goodness it's only another week to payday!

NormansNipple · 23/03/2017 17:49

Hi Okki! I can recommend the bella coco tutorials. She goes through things very steadily and clearly.

Spaghetti thanks for the link Smile

I'm not going for the yarn pegs/sticks on the auction, but I do want a little sock pig. Thanks for the heads up, I thought it was another week yet!

NormansNipple · 23/03/2017 17:50

IAmNot I used shrimp and saffron together - it's my rhubarb and custard combination. I love it Grin

bookbook · 23/03/2017 17:55

Afternoon!
well here are my two colourways from new batch - which is best, or should I go and sort out something else - not totally convinced with the cypress green in there

Woolly Hug crew over HERE!! Chernobyl project 2017, our second thread
TheoriginalLEM · 23/03/2017 18:15

bookbook i actually prefer the green one but both are lovely.

my latest c2c - does anyone havea view on what makes up quicker. c2c or plain granny?

Woolly Hug crew over HERE!! Chernobyl project 2017, our second thread
bookbook · 23/03/2017 18:39

thanks LEM - the one on the right? ( they both have spice and cypress, left has raspberry, right has mustard, which looks a bit green.)
I actually prefer the c2c on looks, and once over the longest diagonal it feels quicker , but as a newbie to crotchet I think the granny is basically less fiddly, and I don't have to concentrate as much , so I can do it for longer IYSWIM?
