Welcome to our second thread supporting our Chernobyl project 2017, the end of the first one crept up on us!

For the last three years we have been making warm, comforting Little Hugs for Belarusian teenagers and children visiting the UK for recuperative holidays during the summer with the fabulous charity the Chernobyl Children's Project and Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline. Photos from previous projects can be found here..

Each year these marvellous charities bring children who live in the most contaminated area near the Chernobyl reactor over to the UK. In summer, when the dust causes radiation levels to rise, it becomes even more important for as many children as possible to leave their contaminated homeland for a few weeks of fresh air and clean food. The rates of childhood cancer are very high, the most common cancers being thyroid and leukemia. Coming to the UK for a four week break increases their immunity against the awful disease when they return home. Often these children are in remission. Sadly though there is a high chance of these children falling ill again. They all suffer living in such difficult conditions and with very little.

Last year 36 children, teens and their interpreters went home with a beautiful Woolly Hug. This year we are keen to help even more groups, so Liverpool, Gloucester/Leeds (same Leeds group but this year spending 2 weeks at each location) Portsmouth and Helpston, Northampton.

That is about 70+ blankets!! shock Gin

With your help we know we can do this

Gin Gin

Please do join us, here’s how..

Crafting Information

  • We would like 12" squares in bright and cheery Stylecraft Special DK colours.
  • PLEASE AVOID USING black, bright green, bright pink, browns, greys, citron, sunshine, fiesta, jaffa and any pale pastels, white or cream for practical reasons. This will help squares fit together more easily.
  • Make squares in a neutral colour theme, or more specifically for a boy or girl. As much as we don’t like to think of colour as being gender specific, these children may.
  • We will be happy to accept 6" squares if making a 12" one feels too much.
  • Crochet or knitted, 4mm hook or needles. Single colour, mixed colour, simple, complex.
  • No blocking and please sew in pesky ends.
  • If needed, we can supply yarn. Let us know if we can send to you.
  • Posting of squares please to the South Coast address, PM if you need it. star

If you think you’d like to make a whole blanket that is WONDERFUL, but please contact us first. We will be asking for gender neutral blankets which are 48 inches by 60m, but would just like to chat to you first, thank you!

Supporting with funds
If anyone would like to donate funds to support this, we would be so grateful. Please PM us for the donation info. Thank you xx

Can anyone help with extras?
There are a few extras which we will be collecting too alongside squares, items which really help, if you would like to add in any of these we would love to receive them for the children, thank you, bless you.

Underwear aged 10 plus. New only

  • Adult size socks (one size fits all) new
  • Toothbrushes, single packed please
  • Hairbrushes
  • Toiletries, toothpaste, shower gel, shampoo etc, but not bars of soap please.
  • Sanitary Towels
  • Plasters
  • Vitamins, please check suitable for 10 years+
  • Any little luxuries that teens might love, eg hair clips, make up bits, stickers etc.

If you would like to add 50p in when you post squares for ice creams that would be so kind, we will split any money we receive between the groups.

Last posting of squares (plus whole blankets) and any extras is Saturday 8th April

No later please as we have to get on and sort at the end of that following week. Thank you. The rush will be on as the first group, Portsmouth arrive in May.

What a big ask! Good grief!

But the fabulous Woolly Hug crew never fail to amaze, last year was an astonishing team effort, as the photo shows, we know that together we can do this.

On behalf of these children and their families, a huge THANK YOU.
Actually, thank you doesn't really come close.

Us xxx

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 12/04/2017 13:50

I can.

Okkitokkiunga · 12/04/2017 14:13

WHHQ have posted a few pics on FB.

Norman love the drawing. Grin

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 12/04/2017 14:16

Thank you Soupy 🍫🥃

I really need to trust myself more! There was nothing wrong with my recollection of the address! But great to have it confirmed, I'd hate it go astray! 😳

Treasures · 12/04/2017 14:40

Jux I don't have any crochet books! Blush It was called the Lazy Wave on Attic24, but buggered if I can find it again!! I've had a look and all I can find is this Neat Wave pattern that looks the same...I think. As I said, I accidentally crocheted only on the back loops of the previous row each time and it came out 3D, so different to what you'd end up with if you followed the pattern correctly.

Normans Your drawing on the FB page made me laugh Grin

KnottyAndPistey · 12/04/2017 16:12

Pistey here back from Mexico to an absolute woolly mountain, bear with :) Gin xx

book I’m an introvert so not a big city person. I really want to see New York though!

Treasures I love Attic24 Grin I’ve used the neat wave pattern before, but not that one. It does look very effective how you’ve done it.

Jux Don’t feel bad! I’m sure they will arrive before K&P finish their sorting Flowers

I’m glad you appreciate my very limited artistic talents Grin

NormansNipple · 12/04/2017 17:01

Apologies for this not Chernobyl or Woolly Hugs related, here's my entry to the work Easter bonnet competition.

When I started Woolly Hugs around 3 months ago I could only do granny squares. Thank you and Flowers to you all for inspiring me to try new things and improve my skills!

Welcome back Pistey! Good luck with your woolly mountain Smile

I'm going to shut up now.....

bookbook · 12/04/2017 17:10

Oh, just back in and seen all the pics on FB :)
love the drawing Norm and wow at that hat - its wonderful!
Treasures - I keep looking at attic24, but not tried any yet, and that is great
Jux - I suspect there is a little wiggle room on posting ...:)

SoupDragon · 12/04/2017 19:40

I'm so rubbish - I've not posted mine Blush

TheoriginalLEM · 12/04/2017 20:02

love the hat norm - am slightly Envy that your work has easter bonnet competitions

Treasures · 12/04/2017 20:20

Normans I appear to quite like Attic24 now I've discovered it Blush I've since made a bird and a heart and a flower and a leaf and a round bauble Grin I like the way she writes her tutorials. Might as well work my way through them because I'm addicted
I reckon you'll win the competition with that amazing hat! Looks like a lot of work has gone into it.

DropZoneOne · 12/04/2017 20:45

Wow just catching up on the face book pics and the woolly mountain! Looks fabulous, hope there's enough, looking forward to seeing all the blankets.

I've had a few days off after mammoth hooking last week and weekend to get a decent Chernobyl parcel. Jux I posted mine yesterday 1st class in the hope any posted 2nd class on Saturday would be arriving at the same time.

Not quite sure what to do next, back to Candy's or something else. My pegs finally arrived and there are so many colours I want! Not sure it's helping me with colour choices but they look so pretty 😙

Bearfrills · 12/04/2017 20:53

normans, she has hip dysplasia, same thing as clicky hips. I had it as a baby so all this is like flashback time for my parents.

soup, I made your flapjack recipe today. I'm planning a flapjack, a sit down and a JD and coke soon.

BlackeyedSusan · 12/04/2017 23:25

oh ,my goodness just looked at the chernobyl squares on face book, they are fabulous

diamantegal · 12/04/2017 23:58

Soup I haven't posted two of mine either. Completely failed at de-peskying - I blame the in-laws. Will wait to see if they need more for Chernobyl and if not they're in Candy's colours so can go there instead.

Chipping did you mean the purple and blue one? It's a Jan Eaton one - will dig the pattern out when I get home from having dinner at The Ivy on expenses - get me and my posh corporate lifestyle which happens once in a blue moon

And gold bunny hunt was good - we were at Hampton Court and it was both in and outside so we visited the whole thing. But DS felt the prize was too small given the effort of walking there and back and round the palace - I had to buy him a Double Decker on the walk home!

diamantegal · 12/04/2017 23:59

OMG Drop I LOVE your pegs. How do I get such a thing of beauty?

Treasures · 13/04/2017 00:56

OMG I have unintentionally lied to you all! Shock

My Lazy Waves square wasn't Attic24 at all, it was THIS ONE

Sorry! Blush

So you're supposed to do one row on the back loops and the next on the front loops and I did them all on the back loops to get a completely different look.

BlackeyedSusan · 13/04/2017 11:50

the origingal one has a definite top/ bottom to the square. yours can go either way. really useful for a blanket!

Treasures · 13/04/2017 12:07

Yes I thought that too Susan! It's fully reversible

MadisonAvenue · 13/04/2017 12:13

That hat Norman!! It's amazing!
I'm an introvert too but feel more at home in a city than anywhere. Where we live is quite rural, we're on a new build estate though, and everyone knows everyone else's business. I love my house and love how I can walk for two minutes through the estate and then be in the woods or on the common (meaning we were able to get a dog) but I miss living where we used to, which was on a busy road in a town centre, where we didn't know our neighbours and they didn't know us and I could go about my day to day life and be invisible. I've been to New York on my own in the past and loved every single minute. I could just walk around with my camera and be anonymous.

Lovely to see so many squares on Facebook! That pile of unopened parcels was something else.

DropZoneOne · 13/04/2017 18:18

diamantegal from Etsy, seller is polkadot giraffe. Had to wait two weeks which felt like a lifetime but did stop me buying more yarn last month! Includes the three new colours too, not that I know which is new and which is old. If someone tells me the names I'll take pictures.

How was The Ivy? Reckon expense account is the only way to do it justice!

BlackeyedSusan · 13/04/2017 20:39

new colours in cluded mushroom and butterscotch I think then something apricotty?
