Welcome to our second thread supporting our Chernobyl project 2017, the end of the first one crept up on us!

For the last three years we have been making warm, comforting Little Hugs for Belarusian teenagers and children visiting the UK for recuperative holidays during the summer with the fabulous charity the Chernobyl Children's Project and Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline. Photos from previous projects can be found here..

Each year these marvellous charities bring children who live in the most contaminated area near the Chernobyl reactor over to the UK. In summer, when the dust causes radiation levels to rise, it becomes even more important for as many children as possible to leave their contaminated homeland for a few weeks of fresh air and clean food. The rates of childhood cancer are very high, the most common cancers being thyroid and leukemia. Coming to the UK for a four week break increases their immunity against the awful disease when they return home. Often these children are in remission. Sadly though there is a high chance of these children falling ill again. They all suffer living in such difficult conditions and with very little.

Last year 36 children, teens and their interpreters went home with a beautiful Woolly Hug. This year we are keen to help even more groups, so Liverpool, Gloucester/Leeds (same Leeds group but this year spending 2 weeks at each location) Portsmouth and Helpston, Northampton.

That is about 70+ blankets!! shock Gin

With your help we know we can do this

Gin Gin

Please do join us, here’s how..

Crafting Information

  • We would like 12" squares in bright and cheery Stylecraft Special DK colours.
  • PLEASE AVOID USING black, bright green, bright pink, browns, greys, citron, sunshine, fiesta, jaffa and any pale pastels, white or cream for practical reasons. This will help squares fit together more easily.
  • Make squares in a neutral colour theme, or more specifically for a boy or girl. As much as we don’t like to think of colour as being gender specific, these children may.
  • We will be happy to accept 6" squares if making a 12" one feels too much.
  • Crochet or knitted, 4mm hook or needles. Single colour, mixed colour, simple, complex.
  • No blocking and please sew in pesky ends.
  • If needed, we can supply yarn. Let us know if we can send to you.
  • Posting of squares please to the South Coast address, PM if you need it. star

If you think you’d like to make a whole blanket that is WONDERFUL, but please contact us first. We will be asking for gender neutral blankets which are 48 inches by 60m, but would just like to chat to you first, thank you!

Supporting with funds
If anyone would like to donate funds to support this, we would be so grateful. Please PM us for the donation info. Thank you xx

Can anyone help with extras?
There are a few extras which we will be collecting too alongside squares, items which really help, if you would like to add in any of these we would love to receive them for the children, thank you, bless you.

Underwear aged 10 plus. New only

  • Adult size socks (one size fits all) new
  • Toothbrushes, single packed please
  • Hairbrushes
  • Toiletries, toothpaste, shower gel, shampoo etc, but not bars of soap please.
  • Sanitary Towels
  • Plasters
  • Vitamins, please check suitable for 10 years+
  • Any little luxuries that teens might love, eg hair clips, make up bits, stickers etc.

If you would like to add 50p in when you post squares for ice creams that would be so kind, we will split any money we receive between the groups.

Last posting of squares (plus whole blankets) and any extras is Saturday 8th April

No later please as we have to get on and sort at the end of that following week. Thank you. The rush will be on as the first group, Portsmouth arrive in May.

What a big ask! Good grief!

But the fabulous Woolly Hug crew never fail to amaze, last year was an astonishing team effort, as the photo shows, we know that together we can do this.

On behalf of these children and their families, a huge THANK YOU.
Actually, thank you doesn't really come close.

Us xxx

That's a lovely array of patterns and colours Another.

Woolly* sounds like Rome was fabulous. One of the many places on my list of where I'd like to visit.

I've finished a (very wonky)12" that is intended for Refugees but can be diverted to Chernobyl if needed. How long does it usually take squares to arrive if posted 2nd class? K&P must be smothered in packages and squares.

Epic bold fail Grin

bookbook · 10/04/2017 16:36

Another - they are so pretty!
Okki - squares are not wonky, they are full of character :) I've found second class quite quick tbh - usually about 3 days.

NormansNipple · 10/04/2017 17:52

Bear Baby Bear is so cute! Don’t let her lead you into a crisp habit though Grin I have my fingers crossed for Wednesday. I can’t remember what you said her condition is. Is it something like clicky hips? I had that as a baby. Apparently I had a really fat terry nappy holding my legs at the right angle.

LEM a yarn bombed pier! Unfortunately I am miles away, did you take any photos?

Soup wonderful square, you have my sympathy for the peskies!

Treasures I can’t take the credit for QC’s name. I think it was Chipping who referred to him as that first Smile

Woolly you had your birthday! Sounds like you had a fab time in Rome Smile Did you get any wool presents? Mine is very soon and I’m taking a trip to…..Bakewell! Exotic eh? Grin

Another I love those squares, so colourful!

Okki your square looks very traditional with the black in it.

I found a stray square while I was looking for wool for my Easter bonnet competition. I can send it as a Candy square but I’m waiting to see if more Chernobyl squares are needed first.

Treasures · 10/04/2017 18:34

Woolly Happy Birthday! Cake
Another and Okki Beautiful squares!
Okki Sometimes 2nd class is faster than 1st class. It has been known! I think my squares took two days 2nd class.

MrsDilligaf · 10/04/2017 19:16

Happy birthday Woolly totally agree that ALL the best people are born in April... You, me, the Queen... Grin

TheWoollybacksWife · 10/04/2017 19:47

...and Hitler MrsD Grin

Lovely squares Okki and Another

No woolly presents Norm although DM gave me money that will probably be spent in Wool Warehouse. I love Bakewell and the Peak District. DH and I honeymooned there and I'm dropping heavy hints about booking a house there for a big family party for my significant birthday next year. Wink

Okkitokkiunga · 10/04/2017 19:55

I need some help. I am trying my first square that's worked in rows. No 76 Granny stripes in Jan Eaton book. I've chained 32 and done foundation row. Except it's 4,5" long or stretches to 5". Is this normal and will finish wider or do I need to do a longer foundation chain that itself measures 6".

Thanks.

TheWoollybacksWife · 10/04/2017 19:58

Okki I find that it does get a bit wider, but if you finish it and find that it's still too narrow then you can always put a round or two of DC around the outside.

VintageTeacup · 10/04/2017 21:22

Chipping, it's good to see you too, thanks for the reassurance on my numbers.

Bear, your baby bear is adorable.

Woolly, happy birthday to you.

Confession time, I only posted today. I was all set on Sat but DCs 3 and 4 had other ideas, we ended up with a lovely big den in the living room (think dining chairs, bedding and all the cushions) and lost track of time for the PO. So they've gone 1st class this morning.

MrsDilligaf · 10/04/2017 21:36

Woolly I don't believe that you are 40 next year!! You barely look 25 Grin

TheWoollybacksWife · 10/04/2017 21:42

You flatterer MrsD Grin I'm afraid my 40th is a dim and distant memory.

Does anyone know what the blanket running total is?

bookbook · 10/04/2017 22:10

no Woolly - it's nailbiting, isn't it?
I am doing Candy's , but can send them off for Chernobyl if needed.

NormansNipple · 10/04/2017 22:12

Another one for the April birthday club!

For a moment Woolly I thought we were the same age... I was going to visit New York for my big birthday next year but I've gone off the idea now they have the Trump. I might go to Sweden instead. The peak district is lovely and not too far from me so it's easy to get there. I'm hoping to go and see the plague village at Eyam too.

Okki I find Jan Eaton patterns come up small in rows and big in rounds! If you find you have the same problem changing the hook size up or down helps.

Vintage I'm sure K&P won't mind the posting date. I have visions of them buried in blankets and squares this week!

NormansNipple · 10/04/2017 22:16

I'm poised to make more Chernobyl squares if needed... I suspect it will be a week or two before we know.

MadisonAvenue · 10/04/2017 22:29

Okki I have to adjust the Jan Eaton rows as they come up much wider than 6" if I do the suggested number of chains.

Norman we're looking at New York next year as my husband has a big birthday and it's also our 20th anniversary. We married there so it only seems right that we celebrate there. NY is absolutely my favourite place in the world but we went to Vegas recently and we both fell a little in love with there too so I'm a little torn.

bookbook · 10/04/2017 22:33

The Jan Eaton ones in the round all came up big for me- I had to leave the last round off every one, like Norm - haven't done any rows though

Treasures · 11/04/2017 11:34

Hello, I've finished my first wavy striped square. Is there anything I can do to make the edges straight? It's 6 inches so could go bigger if I turn it into a 12 inch by doing something different around the stripes.
(It's Spice, Meadow and Lipstick in case anyone's wondering)

Woolly Hug crew over HERE!! Chernobyl project 2017, our second thread
BlackeyedSusan · 11/04/2017 12:09

either a slip stitch round the edge or let it get pulled into shape by it's neighbours when it is joined. it is amazing how the wonky ones straighten up as the stiches are held into place by the edge.

BlackeyedSusan · 11/04/2017 12:10

Sooooo, WHHQ have not updated facebook today. do you think we should be worried that they are buried by all the post posted on Saturday?

SoupDragon · 11/04/2017 16:10

treasures that is the sort of thing I would sort during construction. More often than not steam blocking would sort it (do not do this yourself!) or, as said, it will be pulled straight by its neighbours.

NormansNipple · 11/04/2017 22:50

Treasures that's lovely! Very unusual texture. I haven't seen it before.

Madison I don't envy your decision! To be honest my circumstances changed a bit this year and it will take me longer to save up. I still intend to go, but not for my big birthday. I'll know who to ask for top tips from when I do go Wink I wanted to take a train trip out to Montauk one day.

Susan ShockGrin

bookbook · 11/04/2017 22:59

I am waiting with baited breath for an update..
In the meantime , haven't seen Chipping post - maybe Easter is busy?
Madison and Norm - USA ! - I'm not a big city sort, but would love to see 'The Fall'

Treasures · 12/04/2017 01:53

Thanks Soup and Susan. I tried doing slipstitch around it but down the sides it pulled the stitches so big gaps appeared. Decided I will leave it as is.

Normans It's the Lazy Wave from Attic24, but I did it slightly differently by mistake and ended up with that really cool texture! I did all stitches on the back loops of the previous row. The 3D-ness is double sided too! It's much more 3D than it looks in the photo!

Jux · 12/04/2017 10:22

Wow Treasures, psychedelic!!! I'm really intrigued by it, too! No 76 in Jan Eaton? If when I get the book..... Grin

I am ashamed that I haven't posted my last squares. I've not been great physcally these last few weeks, and that's my only excuse - it took a looooong time to get those peskies done, and they're not done awfully well, either. Blush I'll get them sent now, marked for Chernobyl ... no probs if they're unused though.
