Welcome to our second thread supporting our Chernobyl project 2017, the end of the first one crept up on us!

For the last three years we have been making warm, comforting Little Hugs for Belarusian teenagers and children visiting the UK for recuperative holidays during the summer with the fabulous charity the Chernobyl Children's Project and Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline. Photos from previous projects can be found here..

Each year these marvellous charities bring children who live in the most contaminated area near the Chernobyl reactor over to the UK. In summer, when the dust causes radiation levels to rise, it becomes even more important for as many children as possible to leave their contaminated homeland for a few weeks of fresh air and clean food. The rates of childhood cancer are very high, the most common cancers being thyroid and leukemia. Coming to the UK for a four week break increases their immunity against the awful disease when they return home. Often these children are in remission. Sadly though there is a high chance of these children falling ill again. They all suffer living in such difficult conditions and with very little.

Last year 36 children, teens and their interpreters went home with a beautiful Woolly Hug. This year we are keen to help even more groups, so Liverpool, Gloucester/Leeds (same Leeds group but this year spending 2 weeks at each location) Portsmouth and Helpston, Northampton.

That is about 70+ blankets!! shock Gin

With your help we know we can do this

Gin Gin

Please do join us, here’s how..

Crafting Information

  • We would like 12" squares in bright and cheery Stylecraft Special DK colours.
  • PLEASE AVOID USING black, bright green, bright pink, browns, greys, citron, sunshine, fiesta, jaffa and any pale pastels, white or cream for practical reasons. This will help squares fit together more easily.
  • Make squares in a neutral colour theme, or more specifically for a boy or girl. As much as we don’t like to think of colour as being gender specific, these children may.
  • We will be happy to accept 6" squares if making a 12" one feels too much.
  • Crochet or knitted, 4mm hook or needles. Single colour, mixed colour, simple, complex.
  • No blocking and please sew in pesky ends.
  • If needed, we can supply yarn. Let us know if we can send to you.
  • Posting of squares please to the South Coast address, PM if you need it. star

If you think you’d like to make a whole blanket that is WONDERFUL, but please contact us first. We will be asking for gender neutral blankets which are 48 inches by 60m, but would just like to chat to you first, thank you!

Supporting with funds
If anyone would like to donate funds to support this, we would be so grateful. Please PM us for the donation info. Thank you xx

Can anyone help with extras?
There are a few extras which we will be collecting too alongside squares, items which really help, if you would like to add in any of these we would love to receive them for the children, thank you, bless you.

Underwear aged 10 plus. New only

  • Adult size socks (one size fits all) new
  • Toothbrushes, single packed please
  • Hairbrushes
  • Toiletries, toothpaste, shower gel, shampoo etc, but not bars of soap please.
  • Sanitary Towels
  • Plasters
  • Vitamins, please check suitable for 10 years+
  • Any little luxuries that teens might love, eg hair clips, make up bits, stickers etc.

If you would like to add 50p in when you post squares for ice creams that would be so kind, we will split any money we receive between the groups.

Last posting of squares (plus whole blankets) and any extras is Saturday 8th April

No later please as we have to get on and sort at the end of that following week. Thank you. The rush will be on as the first group, Portsmouth arrive in May.

What a big ask! Good grief!

But the fabulous Woolly Hug crew never fail to amaze, last year was an astonishing team effort, as the photo shows, we know that together we can do this.

On behalf of these children and their families, a huge THANK YOU.
Actually, thank you doesn't really come close.

Us xxx

Not sure why pic is sideways? So I've put new colours in between some similar existing colours to try to show contrast.

Will try again in daylight tomorrow to see if colours come out better.

well, the facebook page is filling with wonderful stuff! 30 blankets so far ..:)

Spindelina · 14/04/2017 09:56

The blankets are lovely, aren't they. I've now got 1x12" and 4x6" in my ready-to-send pile. They are intended for Candy's, but can be diverted if the call goes out!

WitchDancer · 14/04/2017 12:24

Hola from sunny Spain! How are we doing in the 70 blankets? I've been crotcheting while soaking up the sun - I'm sure there's more than one native that thinks I'm the mad English woman, but there's also some who have come and admired what I've done (a bit embarrassing when it's only very basic granny squares!), and in the morning they ask what I'm going to do today.

If we're short then I can post them off when I get back - they're Candy colours so they will do for either project 😀

bookbook · 14/04/2017 13:03

Envy Witch - its cold and grey here.
You will be getting celebrity status - the mad English ! I think most can admire craftmanship :)
The facebook page is putting up a lot of pictures - I think I saw blanket 33 pop up a little while ago, so they are definitely getting nearer!

BlackeyedSusan · 14/04/2017 14:08

make that 34, and masses of squares to be sent out judging by the pictures.

WitchDancer · 14/04/2017 14:30

That's brilliant Book, nearly half way then 😁

I'm wishing some of the sunshine your way...

NormansNipple · 14/04/2017 16:01

LEM I work in retail. They like to give us these little things to do to stop us from dying of boredom, and distract us from physically damaging the annoying customers Grin

Treasures everything I put on my bonnet was from Attic24, some I modified slightly.

Bear I hope baby bear gets her hips sorted soon. At least she shouldn’t have any long term problems. Mine are very flexible now. I’m a bit of a show off in yoga class Grin

You sound like me Madison. I have an internal groan if I see I’m about to bump into one of my neighbours and will have to make small talk Blush They’re all nice people though, usually we just say hi and bye unless there’s important news. I live in a small apartment block.

Witch crocheting in the sun sounds wonderful! Enjoy the rest of your holiday Smile

There are some amazing squares and blankets on Facebook. Still up to 34 when I checked.

I have good news. I won the Easter bonnet competition! I won an Easter egg, Chocolate is always a good incentive for me. But the best bit is that my manager is wearing my hat for all his shifts over the weekend! It looks lovely with his grizzly beard.

VittysCardigan · 14/04/2017 18:38

35 blankets so far - halfway there!!

VintageTeacup · 14/04/2017 19:07

Half way! It's nail biting stuff this. Just spotted mine on fb and gave a little squee out loud, the family think I've gone potty. Currently knocking together some more 6ins for Candys that can be used for chernobs if needed.

BlackeyedSusan · 14/04/2017 23:35

36

and they are beautiful squares vintage.

Mhw02 · 15/04/2017 12:12

Parcel finally posted - apologies for delay! Will arrive on Wednesday due to the bank holiday.

KnottyAndPistey · 17/04/2017 09:54

Morning loves :) Brew

KnottyAndPistey · 17/04/2017 09:54

Knotty has made 16 kits which are all going out to construction crew, I've just made 4, and am currently hooking together a beauty in turquoise!

OP posts:
TheWoollybacksWife · 17/04/2017 10:17

Does that mean you are still a few blankets short or have you got more squares waiting to be sorted?

KnottyAndPistey · 17/04/2017 10:56

There are LOTS more squares to be sorted, the aim is to do this asap so we can see if we need to have a drive on!

But MHW and GleamingHeels are sending I think 11 whole blankets between them, which will push up the tally Grin

Knots and I are making two blankets between us. The group at Seeded in Southsea are making 3 or 4.

We genuinely aren't worried at the mo Gin

Biut we may need more gin!

SoupDragon · 17/04/2017 10:58

I have two 12" squares here. Bloody things were just over the weight limit for a large letter stamp so I need to actually go to the PO.

bookbook · 17/04/2017 11:03

Sounds like it's doing well!
I will just keep an eye out - I have a great big pile to send in for Candys, (it's 22nd April I think next deadline ) which you can divert to Chernobyl if needed :)

MadisonAvenue · 17/04/2017 11:23

It does indeed sound like it's going well!

MrsDilligaf · 17/04/2017 11:50

I have Candy's Hugs squares done as well which I can send if needed.

I'll be posting them shortly so if they are needed for Chernobs then please use them.

I will also send some ice cream money and other bits as I forgot last time Blush

NormansNipple · 17/04/2017 15:17

11 blankets between 2 people! That's impressive Shock

diamantegal · 17/04/2017 18:35

Chipping realised I forgot to post that pattern. If it's the one I think it is, it's this - which may or may not be legible. If not, no idea!

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 17/04/2017 21:49

Diamantegal yes, it was, thank you 💐 I've just looked online now that I know what it's called & there are lots of patterns for it, I'll give it a go soon.

diamantegal · 17/04/2017 23:53

Oh good, guilt trip over then!

Still have my two 12 inch squares on standby just in case - otherwise they'll go to Candy's.

And in personal crochet shocker (sorry!) am on row 29/84 of my coast ripple. This feels like achievement (it's the second column on the instructions) but also somewhat disappointing (I mean, seriously - some people did more than one of these for Chernobyl? I'm a complete failure!). When I started I was regretting not making it double bed sized. Now I'm okay with that! The cat loves it though so that's something as I'm not entirely sure what I'd do with it otherwise!

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 18/04/2017 10:59

😂 Diamantegal. Well done 💐 We'll be needing photos to drool over! That's about 25 more rows than I could do. I just, simply, do not do 'repetitive'. They look AMAZING but I'd just go mad (madder?). I might manage a very small one for a baby sized Little Hug, but I know my limits! 🤣

No need, at all, to have felt guilty! I'd have tracked you down & squeezed it out of you if I'd been desperate to get started! As it is I have knitting I was meant to be doing, but I've been properly 'out of sorts' and my hands are sore, so I haven't done any knitting or crochet.
