Welcome to our second thread supporting our Chernobyl project 2017, the end of the first one crept up on us!

For the last three years we have been making warm, comforting Little Hugs for Belarusian teenagers and children visiting the UK for recuperative holidays during the summer with the fabulous charity the Chernobyl Children's Project and Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline. Photos from previous projects can be found here..

Each year these marvellous charities bring children who live in the most contaminated area near the Chernobyl reactor over to the UK. In summer, when the dust causes radiation levels to rise, it becomes even more important for as many children as possible to leave their contaminated homeland for a few weeks of fresh air and clean food. The rates of childhood cancer are very high, the most common cancers being thyroid and leukemia. Coming to the UK for a four week break increases their immunity against the awful disease when they return home. Often these children are in remission. Sadly though there is a high chance of these children falling ill again. They all suffer living in such difficult conditions and with very little.

Last year 36 children, teens and their interpreters went home with a beautiful Woolly Hug. This year we are keen to help even more groups, so Liverpool, Gloucester/Leeds (same Leeds group but this year spending 2 weeks at each location) Portsmouth and Helpston, Northampton.

That is about 70+ blankets!! shock Gin

With your help we know we can do this

Gin Gin

Please do join us, here’s how..

Crafting Information

  • We would like 12" squares in bright and cheery Stylecraft Special DK colours.
  • PLEASE AVOID USING black, bright green, bright pink, browns, greys, citron, sunshine, fiesta, jaffa and any pale pastels, white or cream for practical reasons. This will help squares fit together more easily.
  • Make squares in a neutral colour theme, or more specifically for a boy or girl. As much as we don’t like to think of colour as being gender specific, these children may.
  • We will be happy to accept 6" squares if making a 12" one feels too much.
  • Crochet or knitted, 4mm hook or needles. Single colour, mixed colour, simple, complex.
  • No blocking and please sew in pesky ends.
  • If needed, we can supply yarn. Let us know if we can send to you.
  • Posting of squares please to the South Coast address, PM if you need it. star

If you think you’d like to make a whole blanket that is WONDERFUL, but please contact us first. We will be asking for gender neutral blankets which are 48 inches by 60m, but would just like to chat to you first, thank you!

Supporting with funds
If anyone would like to donate funds to support this, we would be so grateful. Please PM us for the donation info. Thank you xx

Can anyone help with extras?
There are a few extras which we will be collecting too alongside squares, items which really help, if you would like to add in any of these we would love to receive them for the children, thank you, bless you.

Underwear aged 10 plus. New only

  • Adult size socks (one size fits all) new
  • Toothbrushes, single packed please
  • Hairbrushes
  • Toiletries, toothpaste, shower gel, shampoo etc, but not bars of soap please.
  • Sanitary Towels
  • Plasters
  • Vitamins, please check suitable for 10 years+
  • Any little luxuries that teens might love, eg hair clips, make up bits, stickers etc.

If you would like to add 50p in when you post squares for ice creams that would be so kind, we will split any money we receive between the groups.

Last posting of squares (plus whole blankets) and any extras is Saturday 8th April

No later please as we have to get on and sort at the end of that following week. Thank you. The rush will be on as the first group, Portsmouth arrive in May.

What a big ask! Good grief!

But the fabulous Woolly Hug crew never fail to amaze, last year was an astonishing team effort, as the photo shows, we know that together we can do this.

On behalf of these children and their families, a huge THANK YOU.
Actually, thank you doesn't really come close.

Us xxx

Ooh, Jux, that's pretty!

Empire and saffron? If it is, then it'll do for either Chernobyl or Candy's. Last posting for Chernobyl is this Saturday.

LEM, that looks great! I love the Ripple pattern, I found it does fall into a rhythm and is quite soothing - but perhaps I'm just slightly odd!

bookbook · 04/04/2017 07:36

I thought Chipping meant 478 out of 796 too! Blush
lovely square Jux
It's hard to leave this thread, even though I have posted mine off......

SoupDragon · 04/04/2017 07:43

I have made the grand total of one. There were enough pesky ends for about 7 squares though!

That's beautiful Soup!

MalcolmTuckersOmniShambles · 04/04/2017 08:25

Soup, that's absolutely stunning! I love it.

Know what you mean, book, it's a lovely place to chat!

SoupDragon · 04/04/2017 11:01

Thanks, it was really easy too, which is a bonus!

It's this but I had to add the rainbow border (just UK DC) to bring it up to size.

Mhw02 · 04/04/2017 11:14

Soup that's beautiful! Fancy, multi coloured squares are so pretty, but the peskies involved...ARGH!

I have three blankets worth of peskies to sew in - i'm going to be in a feverish whirl of needlework for the next three days!

SoupDragon · 04/04/2017 11:49

Don't ever annoy Pistey. She once sent me a blankets worth of squares full of pea kiss to it together Wink

I've just made some felted bags and it was lovely - because of the felting process, three was no need to darn in the Peskies! (Which my iPad wants to autocorrect to Leslie's)

SoupDragon · 04/04/2017 11:51

Ive noticed that it also wants to auto correct it to "pea kiss" too. I prefer Leslie's.

MadisonAvenue · 04/04/2017 14:07

Mine are packaged up and ready to go. I'm saving a little trip out to the post office as an excuse to get out of the house when my mother in law descends on us tomorrow.
I wanted to do ten more 12" squares but only managed eight before running out of yarn. I think with what I sent in previously though I've made a bit more than a blanket so I'm happy with that.

Jux · 04/04/2017 14:36

Oh Soup, that's glorious!

Yes, saffron and empire, Malcolm. Good, I can do a few more as I still have half balls left.

Do the colours stay the same year on year?

SoupDragon · 04/04/2017 16:49

From memory, the colours Lways seem to be a list of exclusions rather than a list of colours to use and they do tend to be the same - none of the fluorescent ones and no really pale ones.

NormansNipple · 04/04/2017 17:07

Chipping Luckily for QC his moulting has slowed down. I was on the verge of covering him in Immac and coupling it with the cone of shame to stop him licking it off.

Jux and Soup lovely squares! I find flowers quite hard to do. I'm going to have a go at that pattern Soup for Candy's squares. It looks great in those rainbow colours.

I'm nearly there with my pesky marathon. My finished pile is definitely bigger than the to do pile.

Hello, just dropping in to tell @KnottyandPistey that my second parcel has just gone in the post so should arrive by the end of the week.

First package was 20 x 6" squares and this one is 8 x 12" squares and I'm really flipping pleased with myself Grin Some of the big ones I've liked so much I wanted to keep them for myself, but only because I thought they were pretty and not because I'd ever actually make use of them. Best to send where they're needed!
Think I've already put pictures on here of the first 3 big ones. Here are some of the others.

Wow Treasures you are a crochet machine! Grin

Nice rhubarb and custard square Norman Grin

My wool mountain finally arrived today, yay! I'm now desperately trying to finish a 12 inch so I can get them in the post tomorrow.

Treasures · 04/04/2017 18:45

DoubleR Yes but only because I've literally got nothing else to do except housework
I tried to take a day off from crochet last week because I was getting neck/shoulder aches but I only lasted a couple of hours. It's very addictive!! I'm going to order a new colour or 4 tonight and I'll go and have a look at Candy's Hugs and see about joining in with that one!

bookbook · 04/04/2017 19:10

evening! - 3 blankets worth MHw Shock
Soup - lovely square
Norm - I will be honest , thats why I make myself do the peskies as I go along- saves the heartache.
Treasures - they are great - and yes to joining us at Candys :)

Spindelina · 04/04/2017 21:25

Right, that's me done. Total of ten squares, which is nothing like the work rate that some of you have managed, but is non-zero.

This is my somewhat eclectic final set of squares, which really don't go together but I'm trusting that each of them will find friends.

See you all over on Candy's Hugs!

MrsDilligaf · 04/04/2017 21:46

Squares are on their way Grin

My left little finger is aching. But my pretty new hooks arrived today so I've been playing. Am making a blanket for Baby D in between woolly hugging, it's just basic grannies but it is in a lovely rainbow yarn and mixed in with plain white squares it should look fab.

bookbook · 04/04/2017 22:18

Spin - that one bottom left is gorgeous.
Mine were boring , but hoped to up the numbers -they will be companions!
MrsD - I think everyones fingers must be aching! I have slowed down now I am on Candys .Pretty new hooks?
K&P are going to be buried underneath a mountain of squares by the end of the week Grin

TheWoollybacksWife · 04/04/2017 22:32

I'm on the border now and should be ready to post on Thursday morning.

I'm still waiting for the results of my X-ray and I've got my fingers crossed that everything is ok, but I suspect that I may have to stop doing so much knitting and crocheting. My 4 day break over the weekend will rest my arm and if it feels better then I know my crafting plays a part in my pain 😢

Okkitokkiunga · 04/04/2017 22:32

Could someone PM me the address for squares please as K&P are away. Thanks.

bookbook · 04/04/2017 22:40

done Okki
Woolly - fingers crossed! I have moved more to crotchet due to some neck pain, but still do some knitting, as I much prefer it . Its not fair is it, having something so enjoyable and lovely being curtailed

DoubleR · 04/04/2017 22:47

Right, my squares are done, not many but I've got faster while I've been here so more than there would have been. I'll post them off tomorrow and see you over on the Candy's Hugs thread.
Thank you for being so welcoming and the advice, pegs and wool Grin

Woolly good luck for your results, keeping my fingers crossed for you.

Treasures · 04/04/2017 22:49

It seems like we're all finishing up now... How do we know there will be enough squares? What happens if there's not enough? I vaguely remember K&P saying 70 blankets = 5,600 six inch squares! I feel like I'm having a little panic on their behalf.
