Welcome to our second thread supporting our Chernobyl project 2017, the end of the first one crept up on us!

For the last three years we have been making warm, comforting Little Hugs for Belarusian teenagers and children visiting the UK for recuperative holidays during the summer with the fabulous charity the Chernobyl Children's Project and Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline. Photos from previous projects can be found here..

Each year these marvellous charities bring children who live in the most contaminated area near the Chernobyl reactor over to the UK. In summer, when the dust causes radiation levels to rise, it becomes even more important for as many children as possible to leave their contaminated homeland for a few weeks of fresh air and clean food. The rates of childhood cancer are very high, the most common cancers being thyroid and leukemia. Coming to the UK for a four week break increases their immunity against the awful disease when they return home. Often these children are in remission. Sadly though there is a high chance of these children falling ill again. They all suffer living in such difficult conditions and with very little.

Last year 36 children, teens and their interpreters went home with a beautiful Woolly Hug. This year we are keen to help even more groups, so Liverpool, Gloucester/Leeds (same Leeds group but this year spending 2 weeks at each location) Portsmouth and Helpston, Northampton.

That is about 70+ blankets!! shock Gin

With your help we know we can do this

Gin Gin

Please do join us, here’s how..

Crafting Information

  • We would like 12" squares in bright and cheery Stylecraft Special DK colours.
  • PLEASE AVOID USING black, bright green, bright pink, browns, greys, citron, sunshine, fiesta, jaffa and any pale pastels, white or cream for practical reasons. This will help squares fit together more easily.
  • Make squares in a neutral colour theme, or more specifically for a boy or girl. As much as we don’t like to think of colour as being gender specific, these children may.
  • We will be happy to accept 6" squares if making a 12" one feels too much.
  • Crochet or knitted, 4mm hook or needles. Single colour, mixed colour, simple, complex.
  • No blocking and please sew in pesky ends.
  • If needed, we can supply yarn. Let us know if we can send to you.
  • Posting of squares please to the South Coast address, PM if you need it. star

If you think you’d like to make a whole blanket that is WONDERFUL, but please contact us first. We will be asking for gender neutral blankets which are 48 inches by 60m, but would just like to chat to you first, thank you!

Supporting with funds
If anyone would like to donate funds to support this, we would be so grateful. Please PM us for the donation info. Thank you xx

Can anyone help with extras?
There are a few extras which we will be collecting too alongside squares, items which really help, if you would like to add in any of these we would love to receive them for the children, thank you, bless you.

Underwear aged 10 plus. New only

  • Adult size socks (one size fits all) new
  • Toothbrushes, single packed please
  • Hairbrushes
  • Toiletries, toothpaste, shower gel, shampoo etc, but not bars of soap please.
  • Sanitary Towels
  • Plasters
  • Vitamins, please check suitable for 10 years+
  • Any little luxuries that teens might love, eg hair clips, make up bits, stickers etc.

If you would like to add 50p in when you post squares for ice creams that would be so kind, we will split any money we receive between the groups.

Last posting of squares (plus whole blankets) and any extras is Saturday 8th April

No later please as we have to get on and sort at the end of that following week. Thank you. The rush will be on as the first group, Portsmouth arrive in May.

What a big ask! Good grief!

But the fabulous Woolly Hug crew never fail to amaze, last year was an astonishing team effort, as the photo shows, we know that together we can do this.

On behalf of these children and their families, a huge THANK YOU.
Actually, thank you doesn't really come close.

Us xxx

Treasures I was dreaming about 5600 squares last night and frantically dream crocheting. Grin

Okkitokkiunga · 04/04/2017 23:02

Book thanks.

Treasures · 04/04/2017 23:49

Okki Ha! I've had a couple of crochet dreams too! Grin

NormansNipple · 05/04/2017 00:01

Treasures I love the colours you have used for your squares Smile

RR that's shrimp and saffron, I do love the rhubarb and custardy combination they make Grin Your squares are fab! See you on Candy's Hugs Smile

MrsD My left ring finger aches all the time now, so you're not alone. BabyD's blanket sounds lovely. I'm going to do a rainbow little hug next.

book I did start doing them as I went, but it's so tempting to dig out some different colours and get cracking with the next square that I stopped. You'd have thought I'd have learned by now. Especially after the day of 188 peskies on the cosy stripe blanket! Grin Must try harder...

Spin I adore your squares, they are all so different! My latest batch are all c2c in various colours.

Woolly I hope you get good news from your X-ray Flowers (and a cheeky little hug)

I really hope K&P get all the blankets/squares they need. I think in total I'll have sent just over 2 and a half blankets worth once these last ones are posted. I saw a lady on FB saying she was doing lots of whole blankets! Fingers crossed...

BlackeyedSusan · 05/04/2017 00:11

What happens if there's not enough?

K and P put a call out for more squares. I asked.

I will have about 11ready to go on friday.

Treasures · 05/04/2017 02:38

Thanks Normans and Black

SoupDragon · 05/04/2017 08:20

I can't work out how on earth people manage to make so many whole blankets so quickly. I can only assume they are octopi

bookbook · 05/04/2017 08:50

I know what you mean Soup - I thought I was doing reasonably well . I started off planning on doing enough out of 4 balls of wool, then got sucked in and did more , but I am retired, so was able to do some during the day, - i think they don't sleep!
Norm - I am now looking at patterns, thinking 'can I work the peskies in as I go on this' as one of the parameter Grin

AmethystRaven · 05/04/2017 11:48

Hello all, not been around much lately and only managed 2 squares total Sad every little helps though I suppose. Please could someone PM me the address? It's different to Candy's I think.

MadisonAvenue · 05/04/2017 11:54

Two squares is fab Amethyst! I've PM'd you the address.

MadisonAvenue · 05/04/2017 12:39

A photo of blanket number 23 has just been posted on Facebook!

SoupDragon · 05/04/2017 13:10

I've just done another rainbow centre and I'm darning in the ends before putting the outside part on so I don't have them all to do at the end!

KnottyAndPistey · 05/04/2017 13:31

Afternoon, darlings!

Just catching up and crawling out from beneath wool chaosGrin

So pleased to see my squares arrived safely Smile and everyone's lovely squares and blankets. So thrilled to be part of this - thank you K &P for all of your hard work.

WitchDancer · 05/04/2017 19:32

I've been admiring the pictures on Facebook too today. Do we know if we're going to meet the target 70 blankets yet?

We've got a few squares done in candy colours, which can be used for Chernobyl I believe but they're 6" rather than 12". I can knock 6" up quite quickly so do you want these or fewer because they're 12"?

Guidance if possible please?

MadisonAvenue · 05/04/2017 19:47

LEM your squares look fantastic on Facebook!

Okki that's something I have to learn.

Mine have gone in the post this afternoon.

NormansNipple · 05/04/2017 20:01

Soup a blanket with an easy pattern of trebles works up surprisingly quickly. I was surprised how fast my cosy stripe blanket was finished. I do work but I have anxiety and I find crocheting helps. It gives me something else to do when I'm watching TV. The more things I do at once the calmer I am! That's why I tend to stick to stick to simpler patterns like the c2c. It's easy to do without requiring my full attention. And that's probably more of my life than you needed to know Wink

book Wine and Cake for you if you share any of those patterns you find Smile

Amethyst every square is important. I love the idea of so many different crafters squares being mixed up together into beautiful blankets. It makes me feel all warm and fluffy inside Grin

VittysCardigan · 05/04/2017 20:04

Loving everyone's squares on FB. Can't wait to see all the blankets. Actually feeling better now, the bug really knocked me out! I will move over to the Candy thread but I have just started a cozy stripe blanket which DD2 already has her eyes on!

bookbook · 05/04/2017 20:47

Evening!
Don't the squares look good on FB. I was glad to see mine had arrived.
I'm with Witch on the worrying stakes - wanted to make sure the ones I had done got there in good time, but now wished I had done more, but I can certainly send off the Candys ones I have done, and maybe get a few 12" away too....
Glad you are feeling better Vitty - as I get older, the recuperation seems to take longer...
Norm - my very limited experience has shown that the closed square ones do quite well - I can crotchet the ends in at the same time as doing the stitches, but that tends to make it a bit boring !

TheWoollybacksWife · 05/04/2017 22:28

I've finished! I'll try to get a photo tomorrow before I nip to the post office but tomorrow looks busy, busy, busy.

TheWoollybacksWife · 05/04/2017 22:30

Norm thanks for the cheeky hug. Still no X-ray results - they have apparently been referred to a consultant. I don't know if that is a good or a bad thing. Confused

BlackeyedSusan · 05/04/2017 22:59

just finishing a square as one of mine is the only one who has no matching friends in the batch I am sending. I have seen some on facebook though.

simultaneously wondering whether mine will fit with the others colour wise and looking forward to seeing the results.

DropZoneOne · 05/04/2017 23:05

Am on phone so struggling to do personals, but Okki that's lovely!

I'm finishing up square 7 tonight. I'd wanted to get another one done before posting (just because I like even numbers) - is the Saturday deadline for them to arrive?

Could someone please the south coast address too as only have Ted. Thank you.

MadisonAvenue · 05/04/2017 23:09

Drop Saturday is the last posting date so you've got a couple of days yet.
