Welcome to our second thread supporting our Chernobyl project 2017, the end of the first one crept up on us!

For the last three years we have been making warm, comforting Little Hugs for Belarusian teenagers and children visiting the UK for recuperative holidays during the summer with the fabulous charity the Chernobyl Children's Project and Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline. Photos from previous projects can be found here..

Each year these marvellous charities bring children who live in the most contaminated area near the Chernobyl reactor over to the UK. In summer, when the dust causes radiation levels to rise, it becomes even more important for as many children as possible to leave their contaminated homeland for a few weeks of fresh air and clean food. The rates of childhood cancer are very high, the most common cancers being thyroid and leukemia. Coming to the UK for a four week break increases their immunity against the awful disease when they return home. Often these children are in remission. Sadly though there is a high chance of these children falling ill again. They all suffer living in such difficult conditions and with very little.

Last year 36 children, teens and their interpreters went home with a beautiful Woolly Hug. This year we are keen to help even more groups, so Liverpool, Gloucester/Leeds (same Leeds group but this year spending 2 weeks at each location) Portsmouth and Helpston, Northampton.

That is about 70+ blankets!! shock Gin

With your help we know we can do this

Gin Gin

Please do join us, here’s how..

Crafting Information

  • We would like 12" squares in bright and cheery Stylecraft Special DK colours.
  • PLEASE AVOID USING black, bright green, bright pink, browns, greys, citron, sunshine, fiesta, jaffa and any pale pastels, white or cream for practical reasons. This will help squares fit together more easily.
  • Make squares in a neutral colour theme, or more specifically for a boy or girl. As much as we don’t like to think of colour as being gender specific, these children may.
  • We will be happy to accept 6" squares if making a 12" one feels too much.
  • Crochet or knitted, 4mm hook or needles. Single colour, mixed colour, simple, complex.
  • No blocking and please sew in pesky ends.
  • If needed, we can supply yarn. Let us know if we can send to you.
  • Posting of squares please to the South Coast address, PM if you need it. star

If you think you’d like to make a whole blanket that is WONDERFUL, but please contact us first. We will be asking for gender neutral blankets which are 48 inches by 60m, but would just like to chat to you first, thank you!

Supporting with funds
If anyone would like to donate funds to support this, we would be so grateful. Please PM us for the donation info. Thank you xx

Can anyone help with extras?
There are a few extras which we will be collecting too alongside squares, items which really help, if you would like to add in any of these we would love to receive them for the children, thank you, bless you.

Underwear aged 10 plus. New only

  • Adult size socks (one size fits all) new
  • Toothbrushes, single packed please
  • Hairbrushes
  • Toiletries, toothpaste, shower gel, shampoo etc, but not bars of soap please.
  • Sanitary Towels
  • Plasters
  • Vitamins, please check suitable for 10 years+
  • Any little luxuries that teens might love, eg hair clips, make up bits, stickers etc.

If you would like to add 50p in when you post squares for ice creams that would be so kind, we will split any money we receive between the groups.

Last posting of squares (plus whole blankets) and any extras is Saturday 8th April

No later please as we have to get on and sort at the end of that following week. Thank you. The rush will be on as the first group, Portsmouth arrive in May.

What a big ask! Good grief!

But the fabulous Woolly Hug crew never fail to amaze, last year was an astonishing team effort, as the photo shows, we know that together we can do this.

On behalf of these children and their families, a huge THANK YOU.
Actually, thank you doesn't really come close.

Us xxx

MrsDG. Still sounds like you have a lovely figure to me 16>18 via 🍰 I'm sure makes you lovely inside & out! Well done on the previous weight loss, it's not easy! I hope you really enjoyed your 'Oh I like that > buying it' experience. It's an incredible feeling after not being able to shop easily in high street stores (I'm back to that again & it's no fun).
Lots of lovely squares 😊

Drop. Excellent 'On the go' achievement. DD did really well! 🥈 in her first comp. How old is she? The 11 yo has just got into gymnastics, but only at home/school. She's worried she'd be the oldest in the grade if she started a class. I'm unsure exactly how she'd fit it in!

Okki. If ONLY frogging involved a wand and a prince!

Vitty. Let us know when the next mock is and we can all send good luck vibes!

RR. Are they Candy's Colours?

Diamantegal. DH v SSDK. 🤔 It's a toughie!

LEM. is there anyway to mix & match the yarn? If not could you fold it (or frog it) & use it for a cushion cover instead & choose something else for her blanket?

Madison. A black shift dress with a pretty/brightly coloured card I sounds good.

My Ex is a 'people pleaser'. It was partly why I fell in love with him I guess (nice guy, do anything for anyone, cheerful etc) but his inability to say no to anyone was a large part of why our relationship broke down. Picking your battles is certainly wise & a day out with nice food & just DH is a HUGE improvement on MIL & SIL

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 02/04/2017 12:47

🎈🎉 🍰🥂 Happy Birthday Month NN & WBW 🥂🍰🎉 🎈

I hope you both get lovely 🎁🛍🎁🛍

Malcolm. I'm so sorry to hear about all the little sick people, it's no fun for anyone 🙁

Your squares are beautiful! 🌸

NN have you considered waxing QC? I really don't want to use a biro, I want something that looks soft & warm. If no one has any other suggestions I might have to resort asking people who have blogs. That would be a bit tragic though Blush

Is there ANYONE who isn't coming to Candy's Hugs? Hope not! 😢

Spindelina · 02/04/2017 13:01

Chipping I've just used a graphite pencil.

bookbook · 02/04/2017 13:45

I am already there at Candy's Chipping, but a bit lonely!
Madison - that dress sounds like a plan - a different jacket/shrug/pashmina will mean it will come in useful time and again . And you already have some brownie points - isn't MIL due to be visiting shortly...? tongue between teeth I guess, though at least your DH knows.
Happy Birthday month wishes to Woolly and Norm
(I am actually setting off a baby jacket this afternoon, while watching the boat race :) )

DoubleR · 02/04/2017 20:20

Hi there, yes Chipping they are Candy's Hugs colours so I'll also be over there when I've finished this last 12 inch square. I learned to crochet so I could join in with Candy's Hugs but then the appeal to help with this project came up so I stopped here on the way.

Norman and Woolly Happy Birthday month! Cake

I quite fancy trying the ripple too Malcolm I saw a tutorial on how to do it, are you following a specific pattern?

DoubleR · 02/04/2017 20:22

Gah! Sorry about the bold fails! I'm on DS's bedroom floor again waiting for him to calm down so I can sneak out!

TheoriginalLEM · 02/04/2017 22:25

Have started a ripple pattern!! Tried to do it on my phone but its too small, keeps going off so im going to have to print it out. Got a headache now so will stop and try again tomorrow.

For some reason i struggle with the first rows, tell me the pattern repeats enough to get intuitive? or should i do a cosy stripe to save my sanity? ?

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 03/04/2017 09:45

Thanks Spin. I'd just make them smudgy & messy though & then I'd hae to re do them 😖

bookbook. I did pop in briefly & I saw you there 😊 I think I'll chat here until the deadline .

RR. That's good, pressure is off then!

LEM. I think the first bits are difficult until you have enough to get a hold of properly and things start to flow. Hang in there!

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 03/04/2017 09:58

This is most of what I'll be sending. I might get a few more done before Friday, but I'm not sure I'll be home in daylight hours to take photos, as it was I was already losing the sunlight and my house lights seem to make everything a ghastly colour.

The 6" ones are all completely ready to go. Unfortunately quite a variance in size, but trying to fix the smaller red one made it a tad bigger than 6" so I've left the other slightly smaller ones.

The RED ones are in memory of Juan's husband who unexpectedly died recently, a lovely man, gone far too soon. (He had a well loved, much worn Red Cardi) xx

One lonely knitted square...poor thing!

They are all much more square, even & flat than the photo would lead you to believe.

The 12" ers need finishing, but it won't take long, except the Peskies on the multi coloured one 😖 They look massively curly, but they are fine when pinned, so they'll be fine.

TheHatOfDoom · 03/04/2017 10:20

I'm hoping to get some squares in the post in a few days so can someone pm me the address please? I have the Candys Hugs address but think this is different?

I have two 12" squares in spice and saffron done and am just starting one in grass green and an undecided second colour. Didn't expect the grass to be so bright!

bookbook · 03/04/2017 10:24

LEM I am not good at doing rows rather than rounds, so I am steering clear, but the ripples do look lovely.
Chipping on the home run! - I have been eyeing up doing four little ones into a square - do you slip stitch or crotchet them together first?
I am looking forward to knitting squares again, but it will wait as I have other knitting on the go now, so will crotchet in the meantime .

IAmNotAUserNumber · 03/04/2017 13:20

Hello all, everyone's squares are beautiful, I'm looking forward to seeing the made-up blankets. I have just packaged my final Chernobyl squares, all 12 inches. From left to right: petrol in a basket check; plum and fuscia; saffron and spice; lavender and violet; saffron no petrol; and empire and turquoise.

MrsDilligaf · 03/04/2017 15:05

I'm posting my Chernobyl squares tomorrow and will be off to Candy's Hugs squares shortly. Got one underway already, I don't know why but I knit those rather than crochet!

I've also got to make a baby blanket as my friend has just announced that she is expecting her first baby!! Baby D is probably going to lead this poor little baby astray...

IAmNotAUserNumber · 03/04/2017 15:07

I'm an idiot - just went for a 45 minute walk doing various errands, the main purpose of which was to post the parcel. Guess which errand I forgot to do? Blush

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 03/04/2017 15:40

IAmNot...hmmm...let me think...

😖

Time for another walk?

bookbook. i joined them with a slip stitch first. It has 796, 478 Peskies still to secure. Urgh. Still all the Peskies are done on the 6"ers that was fun NOT yesterday.

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 03/04/2017 15:42

IAmNot. Great squares, I do love knitted stripes!

BlackeyedSusan · 03/04/2017 17:31

In the library googling crochet patterns for a textured square. ie: the yarn I take out with me.

Jux · 03/04/2017 18:54

Chipping 478 peskies! [gasp]

bookbook · 03/04/2017 19:27

Thanks Chipping - I ditto Jux - 478 peskies Shock
IAm - that is usually me Grin

Okkitokkiunga · 03/04/2017 19:32

Well this is my haul of squares. 2 x just under 12" and 12 just under 6". Have to get my tension right as have a few wonky patterns. May get a couple more done but think I am getting RSI in my thumb Grin

bookbook · 03/04/2017 21:14

they are great Okki - you've only just started - very impressed!

NormansNipple · 03/04/2017 21:14

Chipping wax QC!!? ShockShock I don't think he'd stand still long enough Grin
Lovely squares - one is very similar to mine! The purple and pink c2c.

IAmNot love your squares, and very nice photography!

Okki they are wonderful Smile make sure you don't overdo things. I had to rest a little while when my finger started hurting!

I'm depeskying my squares. I think I have 20 to post on Thursday.

TheoriginalLEM · 03/04/2017 22:18

Dp posted my chernobyl squares today Grin Need to get my jan eatin book back from my mum and head on over to candy's.

In other news i managed to start a ripple! its 13" so destined to be a cushion cover i think. Im not sure if I've the patience to start a blanket as i found the foundation row really difficult

Woolly Hug crew over HERE!! Chernobyl project 2017, our second thread
ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 03/04/2017 22:30

Jux & bookbook. I think 796, 478 might have been a slight exaggeration, but it looks like spaghetti 😖

Okki. Fab load of squares 😊

Norman. PVA instead?

LEM there is a method of doing the chain together with the first row, it might be worth looking into if you really want to crochet a blanket. I think stitch markers are a must, but for an accountant please no one hold that against me I'm a weird one, I HATE counting! 😂

Jux · 03/04/2017 23:21

Chipping Grin it turns out I totally misunderstood as I thought you meant 'of 796 peskies there are 478 left to do' GrinGrin

I seem to have done another square this evening - I think it's Chernobyl colours? When's the last posting? It might be Candy colours though, aaargh I have everything mixed up,
