Welcome to our second thread supporting our Chernobyl project 2017, the end of the first one crept up on us!

For the last three years we have been making warm, comforting Little Hugs for Belarusian teenagers and children visiting the UK for recuperative holidays during the summer with the fabulous charity the Chernobyl Children's Project and Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline. Photos from previous projects can be found here..

Each year these marvellous charities bring children who live in the most contaminated area near the Chernobyl reactor over to the UK. In summer, when the dust causes radiation levels to rise, it becomes even more important for as many children as possible to leave their contaminated homeland for a few weeks of fresh air and clean food. The rates of childhood cancer are very high, the most common cancers being thyroid and leukemia. Coming to the UK for a four week break increases their immunity against the awful disease when they return home. Often these children are in remission. Sadly though there is a high chance of these children falling ill again. They all suffer living in such difficult conditions and with very little.

Last year 36 children, teens and their interpreters went home with a beautiful Woolly Hug. This year we are keen to help even more groups, so Liverpool, Gloucester/Leeds (same Leeds group but this year spending 2 weeks at each location) Portsmouth and Helpston, Northampton.

That is about 70+ blankets!! shock Gin

With your help we know we can do this

Gin Gin

Please do join us, here’s how..

Crafting Information

  • We would like 12" squares in bright and cheery Stylecraft Special DK colours.
  • PLEASE AVOID USING black, bright green, bright pink, browns, greys, citron, sunshine, fiesta, jaffa and any pale pastels, white or cream for practical reasons. This will help squares fit together more easily.
  • Make squares in a neutral colour theme, or more specifically for a boy or girl. As much as we don’t like to think of colour as being gender specific, these children may.
  • We will be happy to accept 6" squares if making a 12" one feels too much.
  • Crochet or knitted, 4mm hook or needles. Single colour, mixed colour, simple, complex.
  • No blocking and please sew in pesky ends.
  • If needed, we can supply yarn. Let us know if we can send to you.
  • Posting of squares please to the South Coast address, PM if you need it. star

If you think you’d like to make a whole blanket that is WONDERFUL, but please contact us first. We will be asking for gender neutral blankets which are 48 inches by 60m, but would just like to chat to you first, thank you!

Supporting with funds
If anyone would like to donate funds to support this, we would be so grateful. Please PM us for the donation info. Thank you xx

Can anyone help with extras?
There are a few extras which we will be collecting too alongside squares, items which really help, if you would like to add in any of these we would love to receive them for the children, thank you, bless you.

Underwear aged 10 plus. New only

  • Adult size socks (one size fits all) new
  • Toothbrushes, single packed please
  • Hairbrushes
  • Toiletries, toothpaste, shower gel, shampoo etc, but not bars of soap please.
  • Sanitary Towels
  • Plasters
  • Vitamins, please check suitable for 10 years+
  • Any little luxuries that teens might love, eg hair clips, make up bits, stickers etc.

If you would like to add 50p in when you post squares for ice creams that would be so kind, we will split any money we receive between the groups.

Last posting of squares (plus whole blankets) and any extras is Saturday 8th April

No later please as we have to get on and sort at the end of that following week. Thank you. The rush will be on as the first group, Portsmouth arrive in May.

What a big ask! Good grief!

But the fabulous Woolly Hug crew never fail to amaze, last year was an astonishing team effort, as the photo shows, we know that together we can do this.

On behalf of these children and their families, a huge THANK YOU.
Actually, thank you doesn't really come close.

Us xxx

Thanks TheWoolly, another problem solved. 😀

Okkito blocking makes it harder to join squares together I believe. Frogging is where you undo your work.

Okkitokkiunga · 01/04/2017 22:44

Thanks Witch. I have royally mucked up my last square so was hoping frogging involved a magic wand and a Prince to fix it. Hey ho Wink

bookbook · 01/04/2017 22:48

Evening!
I have decamped to Candys tonight Blush
Mercedes - you know you want to buy :)
MrsD - well done you, thats a real achievement, so lovely to beable to just go and buy!
Chuipping - I haven't written on wool pegs, but I do a lot of writing labels for plants on wooden sticks - and from past experience Stabilo is the best.
Okki - - frogging is pulling back the work . I suspect they don't want us to block, due to the discrepancies of size - they can then block them to fit together more easily. :)

TheoriginalLEM · 01/04/2017 22:58

Missing you guys - packed up my parcel of 20 squares today but didn't make it to the post office. Have been working on a blanket for dd in variegated wool but its starting to look like an expensive venture as one ball is only doing about 3 rows as it grows and at £5 a ball Shock

Hankering after a attic 24 cosy stripe kit but a bit worried id screw up the first few rows.

I have some more stylecraft left so might jump back onto Candy's hugs in between rows.

MalcolmTuckersOmniShambles · 01/04/2017 23:07

Evening!

Well, events such as poorly babies and the sudden demise of our trusty sofa (resulting in the need for an emergency trip to IKEA for a replacement by DH and then over an hour of ironing the new covers for me!) have conspired against me being able to do much in the way of crocheting today.

I have finished off the Cottage Ripple square but have come to the conclusion that I'm probably not going to be able to do the Cupcake Stripe square I wanted to do to go with it. I have all 5 children at home as of now as well, so I can only imagine it's going to become even more limited!

I will send off my paltry three squares this week and will be in right from the beginning should there be a C2018!

LEM - its a lovely community on here isn't it?
Malcolm - all 5 at home - you will need some fortifying !

bookbook · 01/04/2017 23:11

oh and poorly babies - hope they are okay?

TheoriginalLEM · 01/04/2017 23:12

That ripple square is truly a thing of beauty!

DoubleR · 01/04/2017 23:34

Oo that cottage ripple square is lovely Malcolm is it special wool, or just lots of colour changes?
I have now run out of wool until my huge delivery, hopefully early next week, I'm half way through a 12 inch so slightly worried about the deadline looming.

DropZoneOne · 01/04/2017 23:37

Witch I took embroidery scissors - amazed they were let on as they're seriously sharp but no one even took a second look!

Otherwise nail scissors or children's craft scissors with the rounded ends are pretty cheap.

Jux · 01/04/2017 23:43

Malcolm, that is superb! How long did it take you?

MalcolmTuckersOmniShambles · 01/04/2017 23:48

Thanks book - DD1 had a tummy bug earlier this week, I initially thought DS2 was unsettled because he's teething, but I'm fairly sure he's got the same thing. Just needs lots of cuddles and hundreds of nappy changes! DD3 was unusually tired and quiet today... I'm thinking it's probably just a matter of time!

LEM, I did a Cosy Stripe square, I think I chained 48. You could always try the pattern in a square for Candy's and that way you can practice for when you buy the blanket .

DoubleR, it's the Stylecraft DK, just lots of colours changes (each stripe is two rows of the same colour). I did my peskies as I went !!! 😇

MalcolmTuckersOmniShambles · 01/04/2017 23:51

Thanks, Jux! I'd say it probably took me a day if I added it altogether, but in reality it took me about three as I've had poorly children to attend to!

It's a really simple pattern, very soothing to do, I can highly recommend it!

diamantegal · 01/04/2017 23:53

Malcolm I'm going to echo the love for the cottage ripple. I ummed and ahhed about cottage vs coast but your colours look great. Although please don't encourage me to buy more wool, it may lead to the end of an otherwise successful relationship!

TheWoollybacksWife · 02/04/2017 00:05

Lovely square Malc. I think it's amazing that people have learned to knit and crochet to join in with Woolly Hugs.

I'm just about to start colour 71 of 75 while I'm waiting for DD2 to get in from a party.

NormansNipple · 02/04/2017 00:06

ChippingIn I think a nice biro would be best. I used a fine felt tip and it wasn't the best.

MrsD well done! I know how hard it is.

LEM I should have 20 squares to send off too Smile I was worried about doing rows before I started the cosy stripe blanket, but her blog is very easy to follow and makes it clear exactly where the rows start and end which helped me a lot. It does come out very lovely. I'm thinking of doing a double width one for my bed!

Malcolm I'm so in love with your ripples Grin Hope everything is ok with the poorly ones and you're enjoying your full house. You are coming to Candy's Hugs when C2017 is finished aren't you? You will be missed otherwise.

RR I find wool warehouse normally deliver next day to me, fingers crossed for a delivery on Monday for you Smile

NormansNipple · 02/04/2017 00:08

Woolly! Happy birthday month to us Grin

GinCakeWineFlowers

TheWoollybacksWife · 02/04/2017 00:15

Indeed Norm - happy birthday month. DH has said he's bought my present. Is it wrong to hope it comes in an organza bag? Wink

NormansNipple · 02/04/2017 00:26

Not wrong at all. However, in my experience men are not the best at taking hints on present buying. I've had some very wtf moments on birthdays Grin

NormansNipple · 02/04/2017 00:28

The best present I could get is for QC to stop shedding his fur. I think there's going to be an extra bit of kitty love in all my squares despite going over them with the sticky roller!

MalcolmTuckersOmniShambles · 02/04/2017 08:35

You guys are so lovely! I will definitely be moving over to Candy's, I'd miss you lot too much if I didn't! Although I do have a couple of WIP projects I'd also like to do.

I'm thinking I might do a Ripple square in Candy's colours!

Diamante I did both the Coast and the Cottage Ripple in squares, although I had to guess at the number to chain and as the Coast was first, it was smaller than I had hoped, so I had to fudge the border a bit.

I love both sets of colours equally - perhaps you could buy both blanket packs?! Go on, you know you want to!!!

MalcolmTuckersOmniShambles · 02/04/2017 08:40

Oops, forgot to add the photo!

Here are my Attic24-inspired squares which will be sent off this week.

Have loved being a part of C2017!

Woolly Hug crew over HERE!! Chernobyl project 2017, our second thread
TheoriginalLEM · 02/04/2017 09:30

am going to have to have a go at those squares, the ripple looks like witch craft but so so effective.

MadisonAvenue · 02/04/2017 11:21

Blimey, so much catching up to do!

Thanks for the dress advice. I'm now thinking a plain black shift dress with a fine knitted skinny cardigan in a nice bright pink or coral. I think I'd feel more comfortable in something like that. And something like a shift could stay in the wardrobe for future occasions.

Chipping my husband is very much a people-pleaser. He thinks his 'friend' will think badly of him if we don't go....and there'll be food so it won't be a wasted day. I'm just focusing on a slap up meal.
I pick my battles carefully. I have an awkward mother in law and a two-faced sister in law (actually my mother in law is two-faced too), which my husband realises, and they both live near to each other 200 miles away from us so going to this wedding will give me brownie points and means I'll be able to wave him happily on his way down South to see them next time a visit is suggested.

Right, back to the crochet. I'm working a 12" square in the Shell Lace pattern from the Jan Eaton book, it's in Pomegranate. 5" to go!

MalcolmTuckersOmniShambles · 02/04/2017 12:07

Go for it, LEM! I chained 59 to get to around a 10" square, which then enabled me to do the border mentioned in the pattern.

It's SUCH an enjoyable pattern, I've promised my two eldest daughters that I'll make them one each probably won't be ready until they leave home in about 10 years!
