Welcome to our second thread supporting our Chernobyl project 2017, the end of the first one crept up on us!

For the last three years we have been making warm, comforting Little Hugs for Belarusian teenagers and children visiting the UK for recuperative holidays during the summer with the fabulous charity the Chernobyl Children's Project and Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline. Photos from previous projects can be found here..

Each year these marvellous charities bring children who live in the most contaminated area near the Chernobyl reactor over to the UK. In summer, when the dust causes radiation levels to rise, it becomes even more important for as many children as possible to leave their contaminated homeland for a few weeks of fresh air and clean food. The rates of childhood cancer are very high, the most common cancers being thyroid and leukemia. Coming to the UK for a four week break increases their immunity against the awful disease when they return home. Often these children are in remission. Sadly though there is a high chance of these children falling ill again. They all suffer living in such difficult conditions and with very little.

Last year 36 children, teens and their interpreters went home with a beautiful Woolly Hug. This year we are keen to help even more groups, so Liverpool, Gloucester/Leeds (same Leeds group but this year spending 2 weeks at each location) Portsmouth and Helpston, Northampton.

That is about 70+ blankets!! shock Gin

With your help we know we can do this

Gin Gin

Please do join us, here’s how..

Crafting Information

  • We would like 12" squares in bright and cheery Stylecraft Special DK colours.
  • PLEASE AVOID USING black, bright green, bright pink, browns, greys, citron, sunshine, fiesta, jaffa and any pale pastels, white or cream for practical reasons. This will help squares fit together more easily.
  • Make squares in a neutral colour theme, or more specifically for a boy or girl. As much as we don’t like to think of colour as being gender specific, these children may.
  • We will be happy to accept 6" squares if making a 12" one feels too much.
  • Crochet or knitted, 4mm hook or needles. Single colour, mixed colour, simple, complex.
  • No blocking and please sew in pesky ends.
  • If needed, we can supply yarn. Let us know if we can send to you.
  • Posting of squares please to the South Coast address, PM if you need it. star

If you think you’d like to make a whole blanket that is WONDERFUL, but please contact us first. We will be asking for gender neutral blankets which are 48 inches by 60m, but would just like to chat to you first, thank you!

Supporting with funds
If anyone would like to donate funds to support this, we would be so grateful. Please PM us for the donation info. Thank you xx

Can anyone help with extras?
There are a few extras which we will be collecting too alongside squares, items which really help, if you would like to add in any of these we would love to receive them for the children, thank you, bless you.

Underwear aged 10 plus. New only

  • Adult size socks (one size fits all) new
  • Toothbrushes, single packed please
  • Hairbrushes
  • Toiletries, toothpaste, shower gel, shampoo etc, but not bars of soap please.
  • Sanitary Towels
  • Plasters
  • Vitamins, please check suitable for 10 years+
  • Any little luxuries that teens might love, eg hair clips, make up bits, stickers etc.

If you would like to add 50p in when you post squares for ice creams that would be so kind, we will split any money we receive between the groups.

Last posting of squares (plus whole blankets) and any extras is Saturday 8th April

No later please as we have to get on and sort at the end of that following week. Thank you. The rush will be on as the first group, Portsmouth arrive in May.

What a big ask! Good grief!

But the fabulous Woolly Hug crew never fail to amaze, last year was an astonishing team effort, as the photo shows, we know that together we can do this.

On behalf of these children and their families, a huge THANK YOU.
Actually, thank you doesn't really come close.

Us xxx

Witch apparently you can! It was either K or P who'd posted that she'd crocheted a number of squares inflight earlier this year!

Spindelina · 01/04/2017 12:36

Susan a "small parcel" is 45cm x 35cm x 16cm. You can send one of those (Royal Mail) for a bit under £3.

WitchDancer · 01/04/2017 13:04

Fabulous. Now all I need to do is to figure out my clothes to wool ratio in my suitcase! 🤔

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 01/04/2017 13:34

Witch. You could buy a couple of those vacuum seal bags.

Treasures. When I pointed out your wonky clusters, I was trying to explain (clearly badly!) that whatever is causing your clusters to be wonky is surely what is causing your square to be wonky, but hopefully easier to determine. I've frogged a couple that looked wonky and I think it was because my tension had got too loose so the third stitch was longer/baggies.

Bookbook. Lovely squares 🍫 Your DH darts socks & offered to do Peaskies (admitted only until he realised you effectively darn them in!) so why isn't he crocheting some squares? We can be sworn to secrecy! Unless of course I've just figured out how you are SO productive 😳😂

PurpleFrog well done 💐

Madison. I feel your pain. I loathe & detest ANY shopping (that's not wool) but clothes shopping is the worst and if it's fir a wedding, my idea of HELL. No way would I be going to that wedding. You don't know him & DH barely knows him. I'd explain to DH that it's an invitation & not a summons & that I am not going, he can make his decision from there.

Vitty. Sorry to hear the mock test wasn't the best, but hopefully you've got your nerves out of the way now. sorry you feel flat. I'm sending you some bubbles 🥂🍾. When is the real thing?

WBW. At least school discos aren't late! Hope you were with 🥂 by 9.
65/75. Well done!

Okki. You Are Weird. But as bookbook predicted, 😂 Very welcome to do my Peskies.

Spindelina. No. I hadn't though about next year, I was thinking about the point where thIs can go on the 'done' list and CH, LH, KH can get a look in! Not that I don't love doing them for this of course, but right now it would be good to get something pretty much any bloody thing ticked off the 'to do' list in my life...it's just getting longer & longer...

Diamentegal. Good to see QC isn't slacking! Clearly not hired for looks alone despite being so beautiful.

Mercedes I think the slanting looks fab myself, it adds character to the squares. Love the co,our combo. I don't have Lemon or Matador, so they'll go in the basket.

RR. Good shopping 🏅

MrsD. You must have a lovely figure to be able to shop like that. I'm deeply envious.

Mercedes519 · 01/04/2017 14:52

I hope wool warehouse monitors these threads so they can get extra stock in... trying to convince myself that it's worth getting more yarn to get postage!!

Mercedes519 · 01/04/2017 14:54

chipping Matador is a proper bright red. It's a new one for me too but does bring it to life.

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 01/04/2017 16:17

Mercedes. Unless doing so feed a living creature then it's madness not to get enough yarn to avoid paying postage. It's almost two balls of Stylecraft Special DK instead of postage!

Don't forget the code CHARITY, it's a 10% discount, it all helps.

I have got a TON of yarn, I was trying to keep the SSDK to Candy Colours and one pallet of Kinship hugs.

😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

That didn't quite happen, so the next thing was anything that was in the Kinship Hugs pallet, preferably also suitable for C2017.

I think Candy's Hugs, Kinship Hugs & Little Hugs are enough to keep me out of trouble, so I shouldn't really order 'off piste' colours 😕

...but there's always (whispers in case it leads to K&P having a nervous breakdown) C2018...

(I don't use the SSDK for Little Hugs, I prefer baby wool)

Mercedes519 · 01/04/2017 16:32

Don't forget chipping there are always refugee blankets to experiment with!

Thanks for reminding me of the code...must.not.click Grin

I have enough yarn for this Little Hug and the planned blanket beyond that. And the Christmas decs I plan to make. I do not NEED more yarn.

The boysenberry is calling...

bookbook · 01/04/2017 16:43

oh hello K&P - hows the lurgy? - wouldn't mind a cup at all - potters off to switch kettle on...

KnottyAndPistey · 01/04/2017 17:51

Lurgy is slowly getting there thank you, have had this laryngitis tonsillitis thing, I'm not sure, but away for a week from tomorrow, will check in when I can, DH is here to collect, whole blankets to Tedd, squares and extras to South coast branch Grin

But if sending a collection of things, just send to Tedd, not a prob, save your money xxx

Mercedes519 · 01/04/2017 17:53

bookbook thank you for taking the trouble, it is such a nice combo.

Want want want and I don't have any of them as I used up my plum in kinship hugs squares with sage green. So that was a good thing to so I deserve some more...right?

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 01/04/2017 18:14

Mercedes. I'm glad, that despite the iPad making some completely unfathomable changes to my post, you were still able to make enough sense out of it. Bloody ipad is driving me up the wall!

K&P. Thank you Brew most welcome! If you're the poorly part of the Amazing Duo, I hope you're starting to feel a bit better. Xx (if not, I hope you're feeling fabulous! 😊). Either way, a medicinal 🥃 Winging its way to you xx

PEGS. Right, well, most if you know by now that I'm a Really Fussy Twat 😂 I'd like to know which pens you have used (yes, which pens, I know 😖😂) to write on your pegs.

I bought a new Sharpie Ultra Fine Permanent Marker, I like the way it looks initially, but it bleeds and looks a bit fuzzy.

I also bought a Sharpie Pen Stylo, as per the label, it doesn't bleed, but it's a bit too fine.

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 01/04/2017 18:20

I'm up & down like a bloody yo yo, it took me so long to get that post written & sent that I crossed posted with you Oh Lurgied One. That sounds awful! 🤧🤒😥. Hope it buggers off soon & your week away isn't too mad! Xx

diamantegal · 01/04/2017 19:21

Jux I like your thinking - 5 ripples a month sounds much more manageable!

Might have a break tonight and do another fun square instead - someone remind me when the last posting date is?

diamantegal · 01/04/2017 19:24

Ignore that, it's in the OP. Saturday. Hmm, that's a whole week, and I'm off work on Monday (although supposedly taking DS to London Zoo). Surely I can manage another 3 or 4 squares in that time?

DoubleR · 01/04/2017 19:34

Hi diamantegal lovely blanket Smile
We never did get around to arranging that meet up did we...

Jux · 01/04/2017 19:38

Of course you can, diamante !

Has anyone used that lovely looking Caron Cake stuff yet? I need to know how it comes up, and what it looks like when knitted/crocheted up. If anyone has used it, could they post a photo? I'm desperately trying to find a nice multi wool for a cardigan for dd. I've tried a couple which are not right, and just tried two cotton yarns which have no give in them at all, and I just can't use them.

MrsDilligaf · 01/04/2017 20:34

Bookbook shopping is NOT my forte; I'm not one for faffing and because I have a (very gorgeous, dramatic and elegant) navy and cream hat which I bought for pennies when BHS was closing down I wanted a navy dress. But yes, generally I research, try on, despair, research, try on, despair etc etc.

Chipping oh gosh I wish I had a lovely figure....I'm a size 16/18 (more 18 now Confused because, well...cake!) Not so long ago I was a 28/30 so it is very new to me to be able to go into a high street shop and try on a dress and it fits. Obviously I will be needing a good bra, spanx and sucky in tights to make it look good. oh and new shoes, new bag, a cracking blow dry and a makeover!

I've finished my Chernobyl squares Grin they are all granny squares - I've done 2 x 12" squares and 16 x 6" squares. Moving on to Candy's Hugs squares next.

DropZoneOne · 01/04/2017 20:47

Drop here checking in! I've had a busy week hence the lack of updates.

witch you can take a crochet hook and scissors less than 6" on a plane. I managed 2 X 12" squares during my Belfast trip earlier in the week thanks to the flight and all the hanging around airports.

Sat through DD's 1St gymnastics competition this morning and managed another plain granny 12" in that time! It was a lot of waiting around but she came away with a silver medal so smiles all round.

Love seeing all your gorgeous squares on Facebook. Can't wait to see the finished blankets! After trying to join my 6" squares to make it easier for the construction crew, and failing miserably, I am in awe of their fabulous ability.

WitchDancer · 01/04/2017 21:59

I never thought of the scissors Drop, it's a good job you mentioned them! I'm not sure if I've got any that small! Maybe I can do a few squares and leave them attached to the balls of wool, or maybe better I need to buy some.....

TheWoollybacksWife · 01/04/2017 22:11

Witch nail clippers will cut wool in an emergency and I believe you can have them in your hand luggage.

Okkitokkiunga · 01/04/2017 22:20

I was wondering why we can't block squares? And also, what is frogging?

VittysCardigan · 01/04/2017 22:21

Thank you for the fizz Chipping GrinGrin I haven't booked the real test yet, going to do another mock in a couple of weeks.

Am still trying to shake this bug, feel better for a while but then the headache comes back and I feel totally wiped out. It didn't stop me from buying another 7 balls of SSDK today though.
