Welcome to our second thread supporting our Chernobyl project 2017, the end of the first one crept up on us!

For the last three years we have been making warm, comforting Little Hugs for Belarusian teenagers and children visiting the UK for recuperative holidays during the summer with the fabulous charity the Chernobyl Children's Project and Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline. Photos from previous projects can be found here..

Each year these marvellous charities bring children who live in the most contaminated area near the Chernobyl reactor over to the UK. In summer, when the dust causes radiation levels to rise, it becomes even more important for as many children as possible to leave their contaminated homeland for a few weeks of fresh air and clean food. The rates of childhood cancer are very high, the most common cancers being thyroid and leukemia. Coming to the UK for a four week break increases their immunity against the awful disease when they return home. Often these children are in remission. Sadly though there is a high chance of these children falling ill again. They all suffer living in such difficult conditions and with very little.

Last year 36 children, teens and their interpreters went home with a beautiful Woolly Hug. This year we are keen to help even more groups, so Liverpool, Gloucester/Leeds (same Leeds group but this year spending 2 weeks at each location) Portsmouth and Helpston, Northampton.

That is about 70+ blankets!! shock Gin

With your help we know we can do this

Gin Gin

Please do join us, here’s how..

Crafting Information

  • We would like 12" squares in bright and cheery Stylecraft Special DK colours.
  • PLEASE AVOID USING black, bright green, bright pink, browns, greys, citron, sunshine, fiesta, jaffa and any pale pastels, white or cream for practical reasons. This will help squares fit together more easily.
  • Make squares in a neutral colour theme, or more specifically for a boy or girl. As much as we don’t like to think of colour as being gender specific, these children may.
  • We will be happy to accept 6" squares if making a 12" one feels too much.
  • Crochet or knitted, 4mm hook or needles. Single colour, mixed colour, simple, complex.
  • No blocking and please sew in pesky ends.
  • If needed, we can supply yarn. Let us know if we can send to you.
  • Posting of squares please to the South Coast address, PM if you need it. star

If you think you’d like to make a whole blanket that is WONDERFUL, but please contact us first. We will be asking for gender neutral blankets which are 48 inches by 60m, but would just like to chat to you first, thank you!

Supporting with funds
If anyone would like to donate funds to support this, we would be so grateful. Please PM us for the donation info. Thank you xx

Can anyone help with extras?
There are a few extras which we will be collecting too alongside squares, items which really help, if you would like to add in any of these we would love to receive them for the children, thank you, bless you.

Underwear aged 10 plus. New only

  • Adult size socks (one size fits all) new
  • Toothbrushes, single packed please
  • Hairbrushes
  • Toiletries, toothpaste, shower gel, shampoo etc, but not bars of soap please.
  • Sanitary Towels
  • Plasters
  • Vitamins, please check suitable for 10 years+
  • Any little luxuries that teens might love, eg hair clips, make up bits, stickers etc.

If you would like to add 50p in when you post squares for ice creams that would be so kind, we will split any money we receive between the groups.

Last posting of squares (plus whole blankets) and any extras is Saturday 8th April

No later please as we have to get on and sort at the end of that following week. Thank you. The rush will be on as the first group, Portsmouth arrive in May.

What a big ask! Good grief!

But the fabulous Woolly Hug crew never fail to amaze, last year was an astonishing team effort, as the photo shows, we know that together we can do this.

On behalf of these children and their families, a huge THANK YOU.
Actually, thank you doesn't really come close.

Us xxx

This is where I embarrass myself by saying I love peskies. I am in the middle of a 6 colour one and am really looking forward to seeing them in. I wouldn't go quite as far as saying I am drooling at the thought of Woolly's 75, but not far off Grin

Madison I was also just about to recommend Phase Eight. I am very much a jeans and t/shirt girl and have discovered that their clothes fit my pear shape. I bought one last year that looked like a sack on the hangar but with heels and a chunky necklace was great. And very comfortable.

Okkitokkiunga · 31/03/2017 19:01

sewing them in not seeing.

Spindelina · 31/03/2017 21:53

Is anyone else finding themselves planning what to do next year already?

NormansNipple · 31/03/2017 23:21

Vittys so sorry about your mock test - it was probably nerves. Try to relax and you will ace your real test!

Woolly sounds like you're getting on really well with your blanket. Can you post a picture for us before you send it please Smile

Okki would you like to do my peskies too? Grin

Spin I already have a colour scheme for a blanket for next year! And I might do a whole blanket made from rainbow c2c squares. It may require eye protection to look at it though.

Madison I'm afraid I have no fashion sense. I live in leggings and tunics and dread any occasion where I am required to wear something else! I think the important thing is to feel comfortable in whatever you choose to wear.

bookbook · 31/03/2017 23:59

Evening!
I have been gadding tonight - so no Woollly Hugging :)
Vitty - don't let it worry you - better a bad rehearsal :)
Okki - you love peskies? wow - you will have a queue outside your door if you are not careful - Chipping will be at the front :)
Woolly a stroppy teen - just what you need ..... but- 75 stripes Shock - you lot who have made/are making whole blankets are Star's
Spin - erm yes, but also planning all sorts in between ! I have started another Little Hug, to crotchet against a knitted baby jacket and Candys Hugs . I was thinking I may attempt to do a whole blanket next year - it may just be granny squares joined up rather than anything more ambitious ...but I need to find the courage!

diamantegal · 01/04/2017 00:00

K&P, you should be getting my offerings about now. They're mostly 6 inches in Candy's colours, but feel free to use them for this or any other project as you see fit.

Still on a bit of a pause as I work my way through an Attic 24 Ripple blanket, but it's getting a bit tedious at row 24 of 84 so I may come back for a break and a bit of variety!

diamantegal · 01/04/2017 00:08

book - the whole blanket is easier than it sounds as long as you're patient. This has taken me just over 2 weeks so far and that's evenings only as I work full time. No way I'll make the deadline for this year, but if I start early next year I reckon it's perfectly possible. If somewhat monotonous...

diamantegal · 01/04/2017 00:12

P.S. It looks wonkier in the photo than in real life. I can guarantee this as there is clear evidence of quality control in the photo!

Mercedes519 · 01/04/2017 08:34

dia stick at it. I've just finished the Coast blanket and it looks amazing. I did get the kit the Christmas before last and have been doing it on and off since then.

I've been reading the slanting with interested. My Chernobyl squares are in the post (very boring compared to some of the beauties on here but it will set them off a treat) so I've started a Little Hug granny square blanket but it's gone skew-whiff already.

I always understood it was because I go round the same way. Am tempted to keep this one as a coaster and do it with the 'going back the other way' tip. Has this worked for anyone?

Mercedes519 · 01/04/2017 08:36

It doesn't hope I started with the red so it REALLY stands out!

DoubleR · 01/04/2017 09:11

Morning! I didn't get much time for crochet yesterday, but Norman's pegs arrived so I did my first ever Wool Warehouse order, I may have ordered a few sixteen! balls Grin Grin Well I didn't want to pay the postage. I just hope DH isn't in when they arrive Wink , anyway it's for charity.

Vitty that is a beautiful dress, I'm going to buck the trend on this thread and say I love dressing up, bring on the weddings!

Some really beautiful squares and blankets arriving on Facebook.

WitchDancer · 01/04/2017 09:26

Am I sad in that I like sewing in the pesky ends too? To me it's not finished until they are so I do them as soon as I have finished the knitting or hooking part. 😇

Wedding outfit shopping fills me with fear too! I've never felt confident in clothes shopping as I never seem to find anything that looks right at all. Thankfully I've got a a friend that goes around the shop at lightening speed and then thrusts me and the clothes into a cubicle and then says yes or no every time I emerge. 😂. I've got two weddings this year within two weeks of each other but thankfully a different set of friends so I can wear the same outfit twice

MrsDilligaf · 01/04/2017 09:35

Good morning!

I bought a Phase Eight dress yesterday too.

I was out for lunch with friends, snuck out of the pub for a sneaky puff on a ciggie and saw a dress I liked. Nipped in, tried it on, despatched friend back to the pub to get my handbag and paid for it all in 10 minutes.

That's my kind of shopping!

bookbook · 01/04/2017 09:38

Thats just too easy MrsD :) you have to research and try on loads, then the one you really like is not in your size.....

bookbook · 01/04/2017 09:41

Mercedes - those are pretty colours Treasures did the going back the other way thing -I think it has worked :)

Mercedes519 · 01/04/2017 09:58

bookbook I might try that then. Do you think it would work if I did the colour one way and the cream the other way so that the htr stitches are all consistent?

I'm liking the colours more, I was a bit unsure but they do work together. It's a Cath Kidsen esqe palette of fondant, lemon, meadow, matador and cloud blue.

On the topic of colours I have to say I have really like pomegranate. Kind of pinky red. Is raspberry on the same sort of colour palette?

bookbook · 01/04/2017 10:14

In truth I think it would be nice either way, as the texture just then highlights the colours, but why not do a bit both ways to see?
Here is pomegranate against the raspberry . Its a brighter reddy/pink. Raspberry just a bit more muted. It looks a bit different on the two different backgrounds , so put up both pics

bookbook · 01/04/2017 10:16

I should have taken a pic with the boysenberry as well - the 3 go nice together ! Will maybe do later for you - its time I went and got on ! :)

NormansNipple · 01/04/2017 11:12

diamante your blanket is lovely as is your QC! Mine is currently staring at me in a menacing manner, I think he wants a second breakfast.

RR you can reassure your DH that it's not a very expensive hobby. I'm lucky I don't have one, I've been off work this week and have had 2 deliveries from wool warehouse and a trip to the local wool shop! My stash is getting a little out of control. I'm not even sure what I've got now.

Mercedes I like your Cath Kidston colour scheme Smile

Jux · 01/04/2017 11:34

Morning! Had to take a break from hooking as my hands are playing,up a bit. I'll be back on it next week though.

MErcedes, I think raspberry has more blue in it, hence it contrasting well with yellows. If you put it against blues, it will blend and the effect will be gentler.

Jux · 01/04/2017 11:39

diamantegirl, your ripple is a thing of wonder! shame it's monotonous. Hey! If you do 5 rows a month it'll be done at this time next year, and still leave you loads of time to do more interesting things to alleviate the boredom!

Mercedes519 · 01/04/2017 11:55

You yarn pushers you...i don't have raspberry or boysenberry and I love the effect bookbook shows of the different backgrounds making the colours different. I do like the vintage ish colour palette.

Am now trying to restart the granny but keeping the cream going rather than snipping every round. Unless okki lives near me and wants to do the peskies. I pesky as I go otherwise I would never finish any project!

WitchDancer · 01/04/2017 12:15

A question, you lovely hookers - can you take a crotchet hook on an airplane?

BlackeyedSusan · 01/04/2017 12:23

advice please on packaging up squares and posting the cheapest way.

somewhere around 10-12 12" squares. (that should be squarish and 12"ish with lots of "character")

bookbook · 01/04/2017 12:35

Witch - yes you can ! I hooked on the way home in Feb :)
Blackeyed - I've found Royal Mail small parcel 2nd class is best - its £2.90 , and its more dimensions that are the problem -
Small parcel 45cm long 35cm wide 16cm thick 2kg £2.90
I put 14 x 12" and some bits in, well within size with a bit of firming down :) I just laid mine flat in a clean carrier bag, and then reused a deramores parcel plastic bag around the outside, strapped down with a lot of parcel tape......
