Her legacy of Candy's Hugs will be one of love and strength, of coming together to show compassion, support and give and receive comfort.

Seven blankets already with women on the rocky road of cancer treatment in Candy's name. Love in every stitch we say and it really is true. Together we go on, Candy is with us every step. Star

For anyone joining us, and please do, this is an ongoing project, just jump right in, this explains what we are doing and all crafting info. Thank you EVERYONE! x

Just before Christmas, Zombie donated funds to Woolly Hugs and together we hatched a plan to develop an ongoing project with her, which she loved, to make comforting cosy blankets with love in every stitch for women going through treatment for breast and other cancers, and at times these may form part of palliative care.

So glad we could establish Candy's Hugs with her and thanks to you wonderful people achieve her ambition of seeing it all well underway before her death. Her legacy of Candy's Hugs will be one of love and strength, of friendship, learning and developing crafting skills, of creativity, of coming together to show compassion, support and give and receive comfort, Such a beautiful inspirational woman. How lucky we were to know her. Wine

Anyone seeing this project for the first time, wondering about joining in, make this the day you do! This project is ongoing, and a friendlier more supportive bunch of folk you couldn’t wish to meet. We would love to have you on board, from someone who is keen to learn crochet or knitting to the more experienced, ALL are welcome here. And a lack of funds is no barrier, we have wonderful donors who want to take part and need a crafter, so we can send you yarn, needles and hooks if necessary. It is all about being inclusive and team work.

Our previous threads are the first one here and the second one here.. and third here

We are keeping a photo album on our Facebook page.]] All welcome to join us over there too. Thanks

Zombie was a bright and beautiful woman so we chose a palette to reflect this which we call Vibrant Riot; it is inspired too by a blanket that was made for her to give hugs and comfort as she went through treatment. She had it with her at the end, we were so glad to know it still gave her love, big woolly hugs and comfort.

If you would like to be involved in any way, we’d love to have you on board. Please post on this thread and PM with your offers: crafting, donating, need wool, etc, we can help you with all of it.

The yarn is Stylecraft Special DK. Just this please for consistency, and in these colours...

Vibrant Riot Palette
Boysenberry
Claret
Empire
Fuchsia
Grass
Kelly green
Lavender
Lime
Lipstick
Magenta
Meadow
Petrol
Plum
Pomegranate
Saffron
Sherbet
Shrimp
Spice
Turquoise
Tomato
Violet

Squares to be 12 inch or 6 inch, crochet or knitted equally welcome, please use 4mm hook or needles. No blocking necessary and please sew in ends, and make sure any colour changes are firmly knotted.

All crafting abilities genuinely welcome, squares made by beginner or expert will be equally cherished. Simple, complex, single colour, mixed colour. It really is the love and thought that counts.

If you would like to learn how to knit or crochet in 2017, let's do it! We have help for the complete beginner here…. And all on this thread are on hand to help talk you through as well. YouTube has lots of tutorials, you WILL find one that suits! :)

If you feel ambitious and would like to make a whole blanket, then that is wonderful, we are aiming for blankets approx 48 inches by 60 inches, certainly no smaller.

Candy’s Hugs will be an ongoing project, our next collection date is March 11th, then April 22nd. Do message for posting info when ready.

We are on Facebook - Woolly Hugs and Twitter too @Woolly_Hugs both are good ways to keep in touch. ALL welcome over there.

Thank you so much Thanks

I love seeing the photos of all your lovely squares. Here's my first squares, I hope they're acceptable (also hope the photo's there).

I merely run in at the last minute and take all the credit, but really it's you all making the squares that create such beautiful blankets.

Jux · 25/02/2017 00:18

Oh they're all so beautiful!

Yiayoula that is indeed Pterobore's square! Thanks Pterobore, I really enjoyed doing it!

Now, jiffy, large envelope or package/parcel for the squares? 1st or 2nd class, or should they go recorded delivery? How do you package yours?

ThursdayNextIsMyHero · 25/02/2017 06:52

Morning all, I didn't have any jiffy bags but sent some squares as a small parcel (wrapped in a plastic bag and covered in brown paper). Second class was £2.85 and that fitted about 12 12 inch and 8 6 inch squares (this was for Candy's and Chernobyl).
The ones I crochet in the round end up curlier than the c2cs, but they really do have corners.
LEM, that is beautiful.

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 25/02/2017 06:53

Jux. I normally just put them in a padded envelope & they go as a small parcel. But after the previous chattering about it I thought I'd try to post them as a letter - more 'the challenge' than being cost effective. However, they were 6" squares and so wouldn't stay spread out in the envelope, so I put a very thin card either side (two advertising things that had just come in the post) and then used my Pesky's needle to catch them in place. I've told K&P they're allowed to take the pee 😂 5x 6" squares for two First Class stamps.

Creative Posting might become a bit of a personal challenge I think! I've had a few other ideas. Insomniacs Rule 😂

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 25/02/2017 06:57

Mine were for Tunnocks blanket & I haven't done the Pesky's on C2017 or CH yet, so I only had 5 this time.

I used to debate sending them recorded delivery, but figured they really didn't need the additional hassle at the receiving end.

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 25/02/2017 06:58

Are we getting a photo Thursday? 😊

ThursdayNextIsMyHero · 25/02/2017 07:02

Morning Chipping. I just piled my squares all up, so the parcel had a base of 12 inches, the the 6 inches on top, if that makes sense?

I think I've already posted some pics (may be on the Chernobyl thread, or the earlier Candy's), but here are some more.

glenthebattleostrich · 25/02/2017 07:02

Morning everyone, not had time to do much this week but going to try to crack on today.

That blanket is beautiful.

pterobore · 25/02/2017 07:37

You can post up to 2kgs for £2.85. So that's loads of squares. I returned a refugee blanket of about 80 squares for that price.

jux I love you colourways with those crochet pattern! Look so good.

There are so many beautiful squares, in so many different colour combinations. It's amazing what can be done.

scalliondays · 25/02/2017 08:38

Vintageteacup your squares are lovely. I might try posting a photo of my first squares as well - just need to work out how to post an image!
Does anyone have advice on the best way of securing the peskies?

scalliondays · 25/02/2017 08:42

Also meant to say how lovely the blanket looks - there are so many beautiful squares. I'm pleased that plain colours are important as well though.

MyNameIsJane · 25/02/2017 09:08

Beautiful blanket!

FAO: any Woolly Huggers in East Kent

LEM and I are meeting up in Canterbury next Thursday morning. Other local yarn enthusiasts are most welcome - please PM for details if you want to join us for Brew and Cake and hooking. Smile

SpiralArchitect · 25/02/2017 11:13

Lovely squares, everyone - and pterobore that blanket is fab.

WitchDancer · 25/02/2017 11:29

Scallion I just get a darning needle and weave the ends in about 6-10 stitches. Snip them off & jobs a good one

RaptorInaPorkPieHat · 25/02/2017 11:40

Cracking squares everybody Smile and that finished blanket is fab!

I picked up my new wool warehouse order from the sorting office yesterday, DH walked in the house and simply said "more wool?" and said no more about it (he knows he can't really complain as the kitchen contains several boxes of Warhammer figures in various states of painted/unpaintedness).

This week I shall attempt C2C and continue to ignore the housework Grin

Jux · 25/02/2017 12:26

I've just looked at the fb page. Who made that green and purple snowflakey square???? I want that pattern!!!!! Grin

Jux · 25/02/2017 12:40

Oh so many talented people, so many beautiful squares. I could look at that page forever.

SaladDressing · 25/02/2017 12:43

Raptor I was convinced that C2C was beyond me but I followed the Bella Coco tutorial and have found it surprisingly easy once I'd fathomed out how the blocks build up. It also grows quickly!

Here is my 12" square - DS chose the colours!

SaladDressing · 25/02/2017 12:46

Jux I love that purple and green snowflake as well. If you find the pattern please let me know!

TheoriginalLEM · 25/02/2017 13:20

LOVE those colous salad!

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 25/02/2017 14:38

Thursday. Lovely colours 😊

Scallion I use a fat darning needle & weave them under at least fifteen stitches, usually more, in at least two directions - the blanket will wear out before my ends come undone 😁

Raptor. The CTC is easy enough once you get to grips with the way it grows & shrinks. My first one involved a LOT of frogging, because it kept twisting without me noticing, but once you know what you're looking forward it's hard to see how you could screw it up Hmm😂 It grows fast!

Jux it's a great square isn't it. Have you tried searching Ravelry? I think you really need to be able to pick the shapes out, it's deceptive how different patterns look in different colours.
