Her legacy of Candy's Hugs will be one of love and strength, of coming together to show compassion, support and give and receive comfort.

Seven blankets already with women on the rocky road of cancer treatment in Candy's name. Love in every stitch we say and it really is true. Together we go on, Candy is with us every step. Star

For anyone joining us, and please do, this is an ongoing project, just jump right in, this explains what we are doing and all crafting info. Thank you EVERYONE! x

Just before Christmas, Zombie donated funds to Woolly Hugs and together we hatched a plan to develop an ongoing project with her, which she loved, to make comforting cosy blankets with love in every stitch for women going through treatment for breast and other cancers, and at times these may form part of palliative care.

So glad we could establish Candy's Hugs with her and thanks to you wonderful people achieve her ambition of seeing it all well underway before her death. Her legacy of Candy's Hugs will be one of love and strength, of friendship, learning and developing crafting skills, of creativity, of coming together to show compassion, support and give and receive comfort, Such a beautiful inspirational woman. How lucky we were to know her. Wine

Anyone seeing this project for the first time, wondering about joining in, make this the day you do! This project is ongoing, and a friendlier more supportive bunch of folk you couldn’t wish to meet. We would love to have you on board, from someone who is keen to learn crochet or knitting to the more experienced, ALL are welcome here. And a lack of funds is no barrier, we have wonderful donors who want to take part and need a crafter, so we can send you yarn, needles and hooks if necessary. It is all about being inclusive and team work.

Our previous threads are the first one here and the second one here.. and third here

We are keeping a photo album on our Facebook page.]] All welcome to join us over there too. Thanks

Zombie was a bright and beautiful woman so we chose a palette to reflect this which we call Vibrant Riot; it is inspired too by a blanket that was made for her to give hugs and comfort as she went through treatment. She had it with her at the end, we were so glad to know it still gave her love, big woolly hugs and comfort.

If you would like to be involved in any way, we’d love to have you on board. Please post on this thread and PM with your offers: crafting, donating, need wool, etc, we can help you with all of it.

The yarn is Stylecraft Special DK. Just this please for consistency, and in these colours...

Vibrant Riot Palette
Boysenberry
Claret
Empire
Fuchsia
Grass
Kelly green
Lavender
Lime
Lipstick
Magenta
Meadow
Petrol
Plum
Pomegranate
Saffron
Sherbet
Shrimp
Spice
Turquoise
Tomato
Violet

Squares to be 12 inch or 6 inch, crochet or knitted equally welcome, please use 4mm hook or needles. No blocking necessary and please sew in ends, and make sure any colour changes are firmly knotted.

All crafting abilities genuinely welcome, squares made by beginner or expert will be equally cherished. Simple, complex, single colour, mixed colour. It really is the love and thought that counts.

If you would like to learn how to knit or crochet in 2017, let's do it! We have help for the complete beginner here…. And all on this thread are on hand to help talk you through as well. YouTube has lots of tutorials, you WILL find one that suits! :)

If you feel ambitious and would like to make a whole blanket, then that is wonderful, we are aiming for blankets approx 48 inches by 60 inches, certainly no smaller.

Candy’s Hugs will be an ongoing project, our next collection date is March 11th, then April 22nd. Do message for posting info when ready.

We are on Facebook - Woolly Hugs and Twitter too @Woolly_Hugs both are good ways to keep in touch. ALL welcome over there.

Thank you so much Thanks

RaptorInaPorkPieHat · 10/03/2017 15:19

Sorry for your loss Ghost The Attic24 blog has a good idea for re-purposing jumpers as backs of cushions along with buttons and a crochet front (it's on my list of things to make)

Well Done Vitty Smile you'll be motoring about in no time!

I did a square last night made up of 4 mini squares and a border, I must've been thinking about cake because when I finished it looked just like a slice of battenberg Grin

Jux · 10/03/2017 15:41

Ghost I am so sorry. I have a friend whose ex hanged himself and was found (engineered it, tbh) by their 8yo son on a contact w/e. If it's any comfort, the lad had some very troubled years, but now, at 17yo, is out the other side a very likable chap, doing well in College and will go on to an engineering apprenticeship. There is light at the end of the tunnel - it may seem very far away and faint atm, but it's there.

Vitty, congratulations! Was it awful?

Sending these off shortly - the variations in size are not as bad as it they appear in this photo - honest!

Durham forgot to put all their boats on the trailer??!! For Women's Head? You know what they all say about Durham! DD has a couple of very good friends who row fro Durham, this snippet could be comedy gold!

I was really pleased but totally surprised to see Debbie Bliss liked the Gin. Maybe her favorite tipple...

I seem to be having lots of ideas of knitting pictures in my squares am currently working out two more.

KnottyAndPistey · 11/03/2017 09:45

Lovely Ghost That was Leo, his mum was Edgar on here at that time, she is a friend of ours now through WH, see her updates on FB, their anniversary is coming up on March 17th, will be 6 years this year, unbelievable. Her DC are so beautiful, always seem to be busy and gorgeously doing things, but I can only imagine how much pain they are in and always will be. Remember that thread so vividly, they thought he had an ear infection, I posted as DD was one for ear infections, then Leo was dead, so shocking. Thank you for thinking of them, she would be so touched, she is an absolutely wonderful woman. xxx

There is no etiquette here, we are just a bunch of people who want to help others in the way that we can, and Knots and I are thinking what we can do to help you - will be in touch soon, will message. The most enormous hugs to you Ghost xxxxx

Re Durham - as far as I can tell, one of the colleges got left off (two VIII). Now resolved!

Reminded me of a race years ago where our very promising double packed absolutely everything apart from their seats ...!

IAmNotAUserNumber · 11/03/2017 17:12

Bookkbook - Suffragettes, yes, although that hadn't occurred to me until you said it.

Costacoffeeplease · 11/03/2017 18:37

21 squares ready for posting. 30 years since I've knitted, 40 since I've crocheted - I hope they're usable Blush

They look great to me Costa! You've obviously not lost the knack

KnittingNell · 11/03/2017 21:43

I'm so sorry to hear about your loss Ghost, the cushion covers sound like a lovely idea.

I've just registered an account with Wool Warehouse, I think this could be the start of a slippery slope! I've ordered some chunky wool to make a simple scarf for DD and some Empire to make my first Candy square.

bookbook · 11/03/2017 22:30

Cosat - lovely squares. its like riding a bike really :)
It truly is a slippery slope Knitting - I have wool everywhere !

Costacoffeeplease · 12/03/2017 00:01

Thank you

My inspiration to join in was due to my lovely sister in law being diagnosed with oesophageal cancer in December - I had ordered my own wool to knit her a blanket, sadly she died about an hour ago Sad

AmethystRaven · 12/03/2017 07:26

Oh Costa what sad news Flowers

Your squares are lovely, I find knitting and crocheting hugely comforting, I hope it's helping you too. Love to you and your family.

Spindelina · 12/03/2017 07:31

Costa Flowers so sorry for your loss. Oesophageal cancer is a nasty one.

Costacoffeeplease · 12/03/2017 07:49

Thank you. We knew it was terminal, just thought we'd have a bit more time, she was a truly lovely person
