Her legacy of Candy's Hugs will be one of love and strength, of coming together to show compassion, support and give and receive comfort.

Seven blankets already with women on the rocky road of cancer treatment in Candy's name. Love in every stitch we say and it really is true. Together we go on, Candy is with us every step. Star

For anyone joining us, and please do, this is an ongoing project, just jump right in, this explains what we are doing and all crafting info. Thank you EVERYONE! x

Just before Christmas, Zombie donated funds to Woolly Hugs and together we hatched a plan to develop an ongoing project with her, which she loved, to make comforting cosy blankets with love in every stitch for women going through treatment for breast and other cancers, and at times these may form part of palliative care.

So glad we could establish Candy's Hugs with her and thanks to you wonderful people achieve her ambition of seeing it all well underway before her death. Her legacy of Candy's Hugs will be one of love and strength, of friendship, learning and developing crafting skills, of creativity, of coming together to show compassion, support and give and receive comfort, Such a beautiful inspirational woman. How lucky we were to know her. Wine

Anyone seeing this project for the first time, wondering about joining in, make this the day you do! This project is ongoing, and a friendlier more supportive bunch of folk you couldn’t wish to meet. We would love to have you on board, from someone who is keen to learn crochet or knitting to the more experienced, ALL are welcome here. And a lack of funds is no barrier, we have wonderful donors who want to take part and need a crafter, so we can send you yarn, needles and hooks if necessary. It is all about being inclusive and team work.

Our previous threads are the first one here and the second one here.. and third here

We are keeping a photo album on our Facebook page.]] All welcome to join us over there too. Thanks

Zombie was a bright and beautiful woman so we chose a palette to reflect this which we call Vibrant Riot; it is inspired too by a blanket that was made for her to give hugs and comfort as she went through treatment. She had it with her at the end, we were so glad to know it still gave her love, big woolly hugs and comfort.

If you would like to be involved in any way, we’d love to have you on board. Please post on this thread and PM with your offers: crafting, donating, need wool, etc, we can help you with all of it.

The yarn is Stylecraft Special DK. Just this please for consistency, and in these colours...

Vibrant Riot Palette
Boysenberry
Claret
Empire
Fuchsia
Grass
Kelly green
Lavender
Lime
Lipstick
Magenta
Meadow
Petrol
Plum
Pomegranate
Saffron
Sherbet
Shrimp
Spice
Turquoise
Tomato
Violet

Squares to be 12 inch or 6 inch, crochet or knitted equally welcome, please use 4mm hook or needles. No blocking necessary and please sew in ends, and make sure any colour changes are firmly knotted.

All crafting abilities genuinely welcome, squares made by beginner or expert will be equally cherished. Simple, complex, single colour, mixed colour. It really is the love and thought that counts.

If you would like to learn how to knit or crochet in 2017, let's do it! We have help for the complete beginner here…. And all on this thread are on hand to help talk you through as well. YouTube has lots of tutorials, you WILL find one that suits! :)

If you feel ambitious and would like to make a whole blanket, then that is wonderful, we are aiming for blankets approx 48 inches by 60 inches, certainly no smaller.

Candy’s Hugs will be an ongoing project, our next collection date is March 11th, then April 22nd. Do message for posting info when ready.

We are on Facebook - Woolly Hugs and Twitter too @Woolly_Hugs both are good ways to keep in touch. ALL welcome over there.

Thank you so much Thanks

This is massively OT, but DH's rather underwhelming response left much to be desired, so will bring my smugness to the like-minded: Today I learned how to do a Russian join! A smidge faffy and as yet imperfect, but I feel like a proper crocheter now!

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 04/03/2017 23:34

Bearfrills. I'm glad to hear BB has taken to her harness ok & is gaining weight 😊

bookbook. I'm very taken with both the speed of crochet & the fact it's something new, lots of things to learn & I love that you can do so much more pattern & colour wise. However, I miss the softness of knitting & I'm going to knit the squares for the ZombieKids & the Little Hugs blankets. I'm going for yang/yang rather than total darkside 🤣

Axolotyl. Thank you. I love your squares, I must look them up on Ravelry. It's amazing though, quite often when I do that, the original square is one I've bypassed, yet looks fab on here in different colours!

MrsH. I'd love to know your alternative CTC if you can explain it or have a link?

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 04/03/2017 23:36

flutterwoc 💐🎉🍸. Well done!!

Sod DH, he clearly & officially has 'No Clue'. You need an 11 yo, I joined 4 squares together with slip stitch on the back of them, she thinks I'm a genius 😂

Marcipex · 05/03/2017 07:36

Morning all Brew and bacon butties all round?

And milk for baby Bear

bookbook · 05/03/2017 08:55

[proud mum emoticom] Grin
I know what you mean Chipping - its a bit too easy .......! and I have joined 4 squares with slip stitch too :) - (I have sent you a pm re wool) ]
Marcipex - yes please ! ( but I musn't let DH know - he makes me a bacon butty every Sunday for lunch after I come back from the allotment)

BigApple11 · 05/03/2017 09:18

Hello everyone Grin

IAmNotAUserNumber · 05/03/2017 09:48

Morning BigApple
Today I shall be mainly sewing in peskies and tracking down a couple of 6 inch squares that I noticed weren't where they should be last night.
And planning and hopefully starting my next Chernobyl. I'm alternating a 12 inch Chernobyl with a 6 inch Candy until the beginning of April, when I think I'll start a combination of Candys, refugee items and twiddle muffs (although the latter aren't a WH project).
Yesterday I saw a sign on a shop window - DKNY - and my first thought was it was advertising a type of wool Grin

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 05/03/2017 10:30

Marcipex. I'm a bit late for the first round, but I've brought some VeggieBacon over with me so I can join in with the second round 😊 I'd like to say I've been yomping through the woods or working on the allotment, but actually I've been watching YouTube crochet videos 😂 I've chosen which square to do next and some very cute booties

bookbook. Thanks for the PM, I'll go & read it now 😊

BigApple. Hello 😊

IAmNot. I have loads on the go, it just depends what mood I'm in as to which I do. Crochet is much easier for that, with knitting I run out of needles. I'm not sure it's a GOOD thing mind 🤣

Bearfrills · 05/03/2017 10:39

ImNotaUserNumber, the one with the hat? It's on their website, going to order one. I have some patterns from the internet too. I've found an owl one that I'm trying to adapt into a fox but I can't get the ears quite right.

catmaz love the embellishments!

Marcipex · 05/03/2017 11:18

ChippingIn, please recommend a brand of veggie bacon!

Kuriusoranj · 05/03/2017 11:31

So after the lovely inspiration and (direct and indirect) encouragement, today I crocheted my first ever granny square. There were a lot of false starts, but one actually made it to the right size! It's a poor misshapen thing, but I'm ever so proud and as soon as it has some friends to give it confidence it will be on its way to find a home in a hug.

My children know that it's going to be added to a blanket by some lovely kind ladies and they think I'm the dog's whiskers quite frankly. Thank you all for the lovely projects, I'm watching with awe and affection on the facebook group.

MrsHathaway · 05/03/2017 13:20

I'd love to know your alternative CTC if you can explain it or have a link?

It was a paper pattern and copying a person in real life, but I'll do my best ... For all I know this is the usual pattern, but it isn't the one in my book and I've actually created something dead square first time for everything and with relatively little concentration.

It's just made of (ch3 3trc) blocks held together with slip stitches in the corners, and extra ch3 at the edges to get the height when you're increasing into empty space.

(1) Ch6; trc into 4th ch from hook and 5th and 6th (one block created). TURN.

(2) Ch6; trc into 4th ch from hook and 5th and sixth. Sl into corner of previous block (block created). Ch3. 3 trc into ch3 space of previous block (another block created). TURN.

(3 onwards) Ch6. Trc into 4th 5th 6th chains then slip into corner of adjacent block from previous row. Ch3, 3 trc into ch3 of block from previous row. TURN. Repeat until your last block is level with the edge.

(Decrease) Sl along the top of the 3 trc of the previous block. Then ch3, 3 trc, slip as before. Don't forget to turn your work every row.

You can put a colour change in very easily whenever you change a row (or, if you don't hate peskies, after any ch3 3trc sl block).

I guess this is just pixelling?

Respectively, sl into the ch3 space of the block of the previous row, and trc into the ch3 space of the previous row.

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 05/03/2017 13:40

Thank you MrsH but that is the one I've been using, it's the only one I've found online. What does your book say differently?

Well done Kuri. Fun isn't it! Added bonus when the kids think it's cool 😊

Marcipex. Sorry, it's just the Quorn one. I very, very rarely buy it now as quorn was upsetting my tummy, along with many other peoples, and when I really looked into it I decided it wasn't an 'everyday' product. Annoyingly. If I buy sausages etc now I buy the Cauldron ones. Sadly they don't do Bacon!

Marcipex · 05/03/2017 13:54

Thanks anyway Chipping, (I do wish veggie products were nicer.)

I intended this ruffled square for Candys Hugs, then realised I'd gone off piste with the pink. I'm not undoing it as it took ages, so I guess it can go to a Chernobyl blanket.

MrsHathaway · 05/03/2017 14:23

My book one is just rows of trc with a "corner" at the edges to increase and shape. I end up with diamonds Hmm

MrsHathaway · 05/03/2017 14:24

That's fun, Marci. I bet it's lovely to fiddle with and stroke.

Marcipex · 05/03/2017 15:38

MrsH Thank you, that square is certainly fiddly to do!
Your C2C is the only one I know.

nerrsnerr that pattern is lovely.

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 05/03/2017 19:33

Marcipex Me too. But having lived overseas, I'm pretty grateful to be able to buy any veggie products and loads of veggie cheese! Also for our wonderful labelling system!

Your square is pretty, some wee girl will LOVE it! What other colours have you used? On my screen none of them look like Candy colours. I'm not sure if it's all the different devices or whether I have my iPad settings a bit screwed up.

MrsH. That sounds very boring & a thus a recipe for disaster as far as I'm concerned, best avoided I think 🤣

I'm shattered from following a new pattern to make baby booties 😂 I've had to stop because the lighting isn't good enough in here. I need to get a new daylight bulb. I'm off to start a Marigold square for C2017, the colours are so bright I can see the stitches from the other room 😊

Marcipex · 05/03/2017 19:45

ChippingIn, it's Turquoise with frills in Clematis and Sherbet.

VintageTeacup · 05/03/2017 20:39

Hello lovlies, just popping in, loving the squares posted. I've got a little bunch of 6 inchers done this week and was just settling down to do peskies but I've misplaced my darning needle so have ordered one off ebay, oh well I suppose another couple of days won't hurt.

Jux · 05/03/2017 20:44

Aargh! I haven't been able to get on the site since Wed except for maybe a minute or so, I think. I've missed you guys so much! I couldn't even look at the lovely photos!

Well done to WH for winning - hoorah, 3 cheers and gin!

Marcipex · 05/03/2017 20:55

Hello there Jux

FurryLittleTwerp · 05/03/2017 21:15

Ooh thanks for the C2C details!

I had a go the other day, but found it really difficult & ended up pulling it out.

bookbook · 05/03/2017 21:28

Having a quick break from 12" Chernobyl, and came to have a peek . I am going to do a Candys hug tomorrow , (trying to do both at the moment ) and now I have a Little Hug calling me too .....
Jux - thats dreadful - since Wednesday Shock - you must have been having withdrawal symptoms!
I love the frills Marcipex - and I can see why you wanted to use the pink - it lifts it!
