Her legacy of Candy's Hugs will be one of love and strength, of coming together to show compassion, support and give and receive comfort.

Seven blankets already with women on the rocky road of cancer treatment in Candy's name. Love in every stitch we say and it really is true. Together we go on, Candy is with us every step. Star

For anyone joining us, and please do, this is an ongoing project, just jump right in, this explains what we are doing and all crafting info. Thank you EVERYONE! x

Just before Christmas, Zombie donated funds to Woolly Hugs and together we hatched a plan to develop an ongoing project with her, which she loved, to make comforting cosy blankets with love in every stitch for women going through treatment for breast and other cancers, and at times these may form part of palliative care.

So glad we could establish Candy's Hugs with her and thanks to you wonderful people achieve her ambition of seeing it all well underway before her death. Her legacy of Candy's Hugs will be one of love and strength, of friendship, learning and developing crafting skills, of creativity, of coming together to show compassion, support and give and receive comfort, Such a beautiful inspirational woman. How lucky we were to know her. Wine

Anyone seeing this project for the first time, wondering about joining in, make this the day you do! This project is ongoing, and a friendlier more supportive bunch of folk you couldn’t wish to meet. We would love to have you on board, from someone who is keen to learn crochet or knitting to the more experienced, ALL are welcome here. And a lack of funds is no barrier, we have wonderful donors who want to take part and need a crafter, so we can send you yarn, needles and hooks if necessary. It is all about being inclusive and team work.

Our previous threads are the first one here and the second one here.. and third here

We are keeping a photo album on our Facebook page.]] All welcome to join us over there too. Thanks

Zombie was a bright and beautiful woman so we chose a palette to reflect this which we call Vibrant Riot; it is inspired too by a blanket that was made for her to give hugs and comfort as she went through treatment. She had it with her at the end, we were so glad to know it still gave her love, big woolly hugs and comfort.

If you would like to be involved in any way, we’d love to have you on board. Please post on this thread and PM with your offers: crafting, donating, need wool, etc, we can help you with all of it.

The yarn is Stylecraft Special DK. Just this please for consistency, and in these colours...

Vibrant Riot Palette
Boysenberry
Claret
Empire
Fuchsia
Grass
Kelly green
Lavender
Lime
Lipstick
Magenta
Meadow
Petrol
Plum
Pomegranate
Saffron
Sherbet
Shrimp
Spice
Turquoise
Tomato
Violet

Squares to be 12 inch or 6 inch, crochet or knitted equally welcome, please use 4mm hook or needles. No blocking necessary and please sew in ends, and make sure any colour changes are firmly knotted.

All crafting abilities genuinely welcome, squares made by beginner or expert will be equally cherished. Simple, complex, single colour, mixed colour. It really is the love and thought that counts.

If you would like to learn how to knit or crochet in 2017, let's do it! We have help for the complete beginner here…. And all on this thread are on hand to help talk you through as well. YouTube has lots of tutorials, you WILL find one that suits! :)

If you feel ambitious and would like to make a whole blanket, then that is wonderful, we are aiming for blankets approx 48 inches by 60 inches, certainly no smaller.

Candy’s Hugs will be an ongoing project, our next collection date is March 11th, then April 22nd. Do message for posting info when ready.

We are on Facebook - Woolly Hugs and Twitter too @Woolly_Hugs both are good ways to keep in touch. ALL welcome over there.

Thank you so much Thanks

So happy to hear there are plans for a Woolly Hug blanket for Zombielad and Zombielass.
In my mind it will be so enormous that it will be more like a Woolly Tent!
I am sure loads of us will want to contribute.

FurryLittleTwerp · 03/03/2017 10:41

Oh help, my elderly mum wants to join in making squares!

She's a demon with needles & a hook - you'll be overwhelmed in no time Grin

SpiralArchitect · 03/03/2017 11:02

So glad that there will be a blanket for ZLad and Zlass Flowers

I imagine there will be a lot of red in honour of That Dress...

Yiayoula · 03/03/2017 11:59

Ooooh they are gorgeous Happy !!
Have had fun and games with MN this morning, installed the app last night as apparently some issues with the mobile site : posted message earlier today via the app but then went back to logging in via browser and couldn't find this thread.....
After much persistence ( and some "language") have at last found my people again.
Count me in for the ZLad and ZLass blanket, please : agree with you Spiral that the squares will have many creative embellishments in her honour!

Tamsworth17 · 03/03/2017 12:04

book that´s gorgeous. Have you got a pattern for that? what`s it called?

I can`t crochet and so am on the look out for interesting stitches with texture :-)

bookbook · 03/03/2017 12:26

I used a knitting texture pattern, and fitted it into a square Tamworth - give me some time, and I will write it out for you and see if I can make it understandable legible - Its actually very easy!

UnbornMortificado · 03/03/2017 12:26

All these photos are brilliant.

Knotty that's a wonderful idea. I'm so pleased the Zkids would like one. Count me in.

Spindelina · 03/03/2017 13:13

Tamsworth, I'm working my way through the patterns in this. They're all variations on cables. The squares as written come out at about 10" for me, but relatively easy to do less or more to get 6" or 12".

And I think you'll find that you don't crochet yet...

MrsHathaway · 03/03/2017 13:16

You know I said I'd totally given up on C2C?

Lovely Margaret at knitting club has taught me to C2C. Different technique which is harder for me to cock up the tension.

Watch this space ...

Spindelina · 03/03/2017 13:25

Oh, I see I've already posted that link on this thread. Sorry! It's good, though.

bookbook · 03/03/2017 14:01

Right, done ! looking at that link too Spindelina
Now being very old, ! and having knitted and sewn for a long time , I have THIS BOOK There are loads and loads of knitting texture patterns ( and crotchet ones too!) which I am trawling through to try for these squares. I picked another one up for DD in a charity shop for £3 a couple of weeks ago, so may be worth a look :)
Knitted Bead Pattern
I knit relatively loosely , so 30 stitches and 44 rows makes almost bang on 6" for me. So to this pattern I added 6 stitches ( 20 stitches + 4 + 6 =30 ) , so I could knit a garter stitch border of 3 stitches on each end and did 2 rows of garter stitch at top and bottom . Hope that makes sense to you knitters :)
If you can't read it on the photo I have popped on, I can easily cut and paste into a post for anyone !

bookbook · 03/03/2017 14:02

cor, that is small Grin

Spindelina · 03/03/2017 14:20

Small, but going on my ever-growing to-do list!

RaptorInaPorkPieHat · 03/03/2017 15:26

Hurrah for winning! Smile brill news.

I stumbled across this blog today Yarnutopia lots of squares to choose from, one for each day of the year Smile

and attempted this sunflower tutorial off it

Came up OK, although beware she uses US terminology (the video is nicely detailed though, so I found it easy to follow) and a 5mm hook so it came up pretty small, I think I had to add 3 rows to get it up to size. (no photo because my phones out of charge Wink )

RaptorInaPorkPieHat · 03/03/2017 15:28

Oh, and obviously my colours are different. Brown isn't on the list, so I used plum instead, with Saffron and Lime Smile

Spindelina · 03/03/2017 15:38

Raptor that blog doesn't help the size of my to-do list either.

RaptorInaPorkPieHat · 03/03/2017 15:48

Sorry Grin

Spindelina · 03/03/2017 15:52

I'm going on maternity leave in July. I won't have anything else to do for six months, right?!
