We knew her time left with us was short, but the news of Zombie’s death on January 30th was still a sad shock, we send so much love to her family and her many, many friends who love and will miss her greatly, we hold our happy memories of her very dear. Bless her.

Just before Christmas, Zombie donated funds to Woolly Hugs and together we hatched a plan to develop an ongoing project with her, which she loved, to make comforting cosy blankets with love in every stitch for women going through treatment for breast and other cancers, and at times these may form part of palliative care.

So glad we could establish Candy's Hugs with her and thanks to you wonderful people achieve her ambition of seeing it all well underway before her death. Her legacy of Candy's Hugs will be one of love and strength, of friendship, learning and developing crafting skills, of creativity, of coming together to show compassion, support and give and receive comfort, Such a beautiful inspirational woman. How lucky we were to know her. X

Raising a glass or two to the fabulous Zombie, we go on together Wine

Anyone seeing this project for the first time, wondering about joining in, make this the day you do! This project is ongoing, and a friendlier more supportive bunch of folk you couldn’t wish to meet. We would love to have you on board, from someone who is keen to learn crochet or knitting to the more experienced, ALL are welcome here. And a lack of funds is no barrier, we have wonderful donors who want to take part and need a crafter, so we can send you yarn, needles and hooks if necessary. It is all about being inclusive and team work.

Our previous threads are the first one here and the second one here..

We are keeping a photo album on our Facebook page.]] All welcome to join us over there too. Thanks

Zombie was a bright and beautiful woman so we chose a palette to reflect this which we call Vibrant Riot; it is inspired too by a blanket that was made for her as she went through treatment. She had it with her at the end, we were so glad to know it still gave her love, big woolly hugs and comfort.

If you would like to be involved in any way, we’d love to have you on board. Please post on this thread and PM with your offers: crafting, donating, need wool, etc, we can help you with all of it.

The yarn is Stylecraft Special DK. Just this please for consistency, and in these colours...

Vibrant Riot Palette
Boysenberry
Claret
Empire
Fuchsia
Grass
Kelly green
Lavender
Lime
Lipstick
Magenta
Meadow
Petrol
Plum
Pomegranate
Saffron
Sherbet
Shrimp
Spice
Turquoise
Tomato
Violet

Squares to be 12 inch or 6 inch, crochet or knitted equally welcome, please use 4mm hook or needles. No blocking necessary and please sew in ends, and make sure any colour changes are firmly knotted.

All crafting abilities genuinely welcome, squares made by beginner or expert will be equally cherished. Simple, complex, single colour, mixed colour. It really is the love and thought that counts.

If you would like to learn how to knit or crochet in 2017, let's do it! We have help for the complete beginner here…. And all on this thread are on hand to help talk you through as well. YouTube has lots of tutorials, you WILL find one that suits! :)

If you feel ambitious and would like to make a whole blanket, then that is wonderful, we are aiming for blankets approx 48 inches by 60 inches, certainly no smaller.

Candy’s Hugs will be an ongoing project, our next collection date is March 11th, then April 22nd. Do message for posting info when ready.

We are on Facebook - Woolly Hugs and Twitter too @Woolly_Hugs both are good ways to keep in touch. All welcome over there.

Thank you so much xx

Ooh...speaking of hooking...is anyone a member of Crochet Gate on facebook? There was a bunfight on there that any mumsnetter would have been proud of! 😂😂

yaela123 · 12/02/2017 10:57

Hello - I've just discovered this.

I want to help. I can knit.

I have a bit of time but not too much money

What can I do?

Thank you Smile I've done that

DropZoneOne · 12/02/2017 12:03

Malcolm and Polter I undid the whole lot and started over, chalking it up to experience. I'm happier with my second attempt - changing colours was a bit painful but made it easier for me to see where I was up to.

Chipping It's one of DH fave programmes so is on a LOT in our house, he's a bit of a game show geek 😁

Malcom I love your patterned ones, they are pretty

Armi I'll be doing simple ones for a while I think. If you look at the constructed blankets, there's single coloured squares to break up all the patterns

That's lovely Drop

Chipping I overdosed on cake! Fab place and we'll definitely be going back but the slices of homemade cake they serve are enormous! I had cherry and white chocolate and it was amazing, loaded with cream too. Then we called in to see my parents on the way home and I had two chocolate eclair forced on me. Would've been rude to say no...wouldn't it?!

NormansNipple · 12/02/2017 12:14

Ta-da!

It's my second attempt. The first one had a huge hole in the middle so I had to reduce the starting ring and the chains the petals are built on. I might use a smaller hook for the flowers in future.

Thanks Raptor and ChippingIn for the pep talks Grin

That's beautiful Norman

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 12/02/2017 12:24

Vitty. OMG. I'm clearly in need of help. I didn't even see the small penis your finger, I saw the background & thought you were measuring a piece of knitting/crochet 🤣 Your poor small Tpenis finger. Could you try some very thin latex PMSL gloves in a smaller size they'd need to be so they're snug and the yarn glides over your penis finger?

That, or knit.

I'm working on my flower...

PMSL - that's SO thoughtful of you Norman

RaptorInaPorkPieHat · 12/02/2017 12:28

Thanks so much Malcolm Smile

I now know exactly where I went wrong (the 5 chain on round 4 should make a loop!). I'm not frogging back on this one, as I'd carried on regardless (it looks OK, it's just not a Willow) but I'll know for next time Smile

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 12/02/2017 12:46

POP. I'm pleased to hear your friend & her baby are both ok 💐 I'm glad you're arm is feeling ok, 'crochet - the healer' 🤣 I hope you and DH have a lovely afternoon with The Hug. It's so cool he's involved. CTC pixel crochet - dear god, you're up for a challenge aren't you 🤣 I don't do Facebook, so please feel free to tell us about the bun fight😬

Drop. That square looks great! I like TP too. Half my squares are done with that on in the background!

Madison. Yes, it would have been incredibly rude to refuse. That cake sounds DEVINE. I don't suppose the Tea Shop is within driving distance of a GU post code is it?

VittysCardigan · 12/02/2017 13:26

Chipping - Grin at latex & tiny penis I have had another look at the pic and it's even worse than I thought GrinGrinGrin

Note to self: check pics and edit posts!

VittysCardigan · 12/02/2017 13:28

Yes Pop - please feel free to tell us about the bunfight

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 12/02/2017 13:47

Just catching up.
I've found the Bella Coco videos great. I am alternating between CandyHugs and squares for a home blanket following a request from the DC. I practice on the home blanket Wink
Here is my CandyHug c2c courtesy of BellaCoco (2nd c2c as I did a single colour practice square for the home blanket)
The photo is wonky not the squareGrin

Annie I'd like to state in my defence that my grin at Vitty's penis finger and my flower comment were completely unrelated!

VittysCardigan · 12/02/2017 14:37

Just finished my c2c little hug, I would like to add a border but am struggling- anyone have any suggestions? I wondered about changing to a plain colour?

NormansNipple · 12/02/2017 14:43

That's lovely Vitty.

I'd probably make a scalloped border in white, I like white and pink together.

OrangeIsTheNewPop · 12/02/2017 14:43

Vitty maybe a shell border in white?

NormansNipple · 12/02/2017 14:45

Random question. What type of hook is everyone using? I have plain metal ones but I'm wondering if the hooks with thicker handles are more comfortable to use. I hold my hook like a knife rather than a pen, in case that makes a difference.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 12/02/2017 14:59

I use one with a thicker handle as I have hyper mobile finger joints which get stiff and sore if I have to grip something too small.

WhoKn0wsWhereTheTimeG0es · 12/02/2017 15:06

I use Pony Easy Grip hooks held like a pen because my little fingers get stiff gripping narrow ones. They are round and I prefer them to the shaped ones such as the Addi swing hook as I twist and turn the hook a lot as I work. The hook part was too short on the Addi for me as well.

VittysCardigan · 12/02/2017 15:16

Thanks - will go with a white shell/scalloped border. Going to do something else first though, either a 12" square for Chernobyl or Willow square for Candy. So many projects Smile
