We knew her time left with us was short, but the news of Zombie’s death on January 30th was still a sad shock, we send so much love to her family and her many, many friends who love and will miss her greatly, we hold our happy memories of her very dear. Bless her.

Just before Christmas, Zombie donated funds to Woolly Hugs and together we hatched a plan to develop an ongoing project with her, which she loved, to make comforting cosy blankets with love in every stitch for women going through treatment for breast and other cancers, and at times these may form part of palliative care.

So glad we could establish Candy's Hugs with her and thanks to you wonderful people achieve her ambition of seeing it all well underway before her death. Her legacy of Candy's Hugs will be one of love and strength, of friendship, learning and developing crafting skills, of creativity, of coming together to show compassion, support and give and receive comfort, Such a beautiful inspirational woman. How lucky we were to know her. X

Raising a glass or two to the fabulous Zombie, we go on together Wine

Anyone seeing this project for the first time, wondering about joining in, make this the day you do! This project is ongoing, and a friendlier more supportive bunch of folk you couldn’t wish to meet. We would love to have you on board, from someone who is keen to learn crochet or knitting to the more experienced, ALL are welcome here. And a lack of funds is no barrier, we have wonderful donors who want to take part and need a crafter, so we can send you yarn, needles and hooks if necessary. It is all about being inclusive and team work.

Our previous threads are the first one here and the second one here..

We are keeping a photo album on our Facebook page.]] All welcome to join us over there too. Thanks

Zombie was a bright and beautiful woman so we chose a palette to reflect this which we call Vibrant Riot; it is inspired too by a blanket that was made for her as she went through treatment. She had it with her at the end, we were so glad to know it still gave her love, big woolly hugs and comfort.

If you would like to be involved in any way, we’d love to have you on board. Please post on this thread and PM with your offers: crafting, donating, need wool, etc, we can help you with all of it.

The yarn is Stylecraft Special DK. Just this please for consistency, and in these colours...

Vibrant Riot Palette
Boysenberry
Claret
Empire
Fuchsia
Grass
Kelly green
Lavender
Lime
Lipstick
Magenta
Meadow
Petrol
Plum
Pomegranate
Saffron
Sherbet
Shrimp
Spice
Turquoise
Tomato
Violet

Squares to be 12 inch or 6 inch, crochet or knitted equally welcome, please use 4mm hook or needles. No blocking necessary and please sew in ends, and make sure any colour changes are firmly knotted.

All crafting abilities genuinely welcome, squares made by beginner or expert will be equally cherished. Simple, complex, single colour, mixed colour. It really is the love and thought that counts.

If you would like to learn how to knit or crochet in 2017, let's do it! We have help for the complete beginner here…. And all on this thread are on hand to help talk you through as well. YouTube has lots of tutorials, you WILL find one that suits! :)

If you feel ambitious and would like to make a whole blanket, then that is wonderful, we are aiming for blankets approx 48 inches by 60 inches, certainly no smaller.

Candy’s Hugs will be an ongoing project, our next collection date is March 11th, then April 22nd. Do message for posting info when ready.

We are on Facebook - Woolly Hugs and Twitter too @Woolly_Hugs both are good ways to keep in touch. All welcome over there.

Thank you so much xx

Norman I bought myself a Clover Amour hook last week and I'm finding that it's so much better than a normal metal hook. It's nicer to hold and I find it doesn't split the yarn so much.

Chipping unfortunately not, we could've sat there eating cake and crocheting too!

Thanks I'll look for one with a grip I think as the end keeps rubbing on my palm near my wrist. I keep letting go of the hook too. I'll make sure the hook part is fairly long. I've never crocheted this much before so I'm noticing little things I think maybe can be improved.

NormansNipple · 12/02/2017 16:48

I'm going to go for a clover amour Smile they have the best reviews.

Good evening! I've 8 completed squares (however some of the. Probably won't past muster!! Knitting novice...well a recycled knitting novice!).
I am using the app but I can't seem to pm (am I doing something wrong??)

Anyway I was wondering if someone could pm me the address to send my squares to please? I will pop them in the post tomorrow

Many thanks 😊

NormansNipple · 12/02/2017 20:25

Wow coffee when I get my new hooks I'm going to be brandishing them all over public transport! Grin

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 12/02/2017 21:42

Norman That's a fab square, well done! Is it meadow & fusia? The colours look so different on the screen. A smaller hook could work really well For the flower.

I was using the basic Pony hook which I already had, but when I was in the wool shop buying a couple 13 balls of wool, a Clover Amour hook jumped into my bag, then when I went back for the Fusia they had ordered in for me, one of his mates jumped in too, so I have one for home & one for 'out & about'. I think they're really nice to use, but I don't have much to compare it to. It seemed odd at first as the metal bit is so short, but it's plenty big enough actually.

Raptorina. It's quite satisfying when you finally work out where it was going wrong isn't it.

Vitty. I was on my iPad mini earlier, it looks even funnier on my phone.

K&P. Is it Canada Day? 🤣 I have voted, but might vote on behalf of a few dozen friends 😬 (Thanks to *Fairy's message!.). All's fair in love & wool!

Madison. That is a shame, it would have been great to have been able to meet you there.

CoffeeAndCrochet. Hmmm...might to try again, it usually just gets me pitying looks though 🤣

MalcolmTuckersOmniShambles · 12/02/2017 22:18

Evening, everyone!

I managed to get my Peony square done today. Thank you to whoever said they'd managed it once they worked out the petals bit - that made me persevere when it was looking a bit dodgy as I started out and I am very pleased with the result!

Colours are lime, fuchsia and saffron.

Might try some plain textured squares next!

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 12/02/2017 22:26

Malcolm. That looks great. I'm not letting The Child see that or she'll want to do it for the school blanket & given that doing a chain is proving difficult enough, I'm thinking not 🤣

Jux · 12/02/2017 22:30

Ha! I did 6mrather wonky squares and then reread the op and saw I should use a size 4mm hook!!! Aaargh! All squares done with 5mm hook!

I am onto 3rd square with correct sized hook now. Phew, all well. So glad I saw it before I packed them up though. I know you'd have done something with them regardless, but I'd've been so embarrassed.

You lot are so clever and adventurous! All those squares look brilliant. Not wonky like mine, and I haven't even tried to have colour changes yet, let alone prettinesses added.

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 13/02/2017 01:38

Jux. I've no idea if would have made much difference as long as the square was about be right size?! Given they're a mixture of knitting & crochet, loads of different patterns & tensions, I can't honestly see it making that much difference!?

Colour changing is easy, just cut the yarn (leaving a chunk for weaving in the pesky), bind off & start with the next colour. I pull through a loop so it's double thickness for the first stitch, then drop the short tail. Nothing to it & it actually makes it easier to see what you're doing.

This tutorial. Is easy to follow.

OrangeIsTheNewPop · 13/02/2017 10:09

Good morning!

I've just been on my first C25K crawl run! Now time for a few pll episodes and a little hooking.

bookbook · 13/02/2017 11:02

Good Morning!
Home from hols - its cold......Grin
it has been lovely looking at all the pics. I am fairly confident with the basic crotchet now, but am truly a knitter at heart, but I think I may do a bit of both from now on . Have to start with some fancier stuff, and colour changes.
Vitty - I crotcheted on the way home on the plane, so definitely no problem! I was pleased with myself , and thought to do a 12" for the refugees, as its odd wool from abroad - slight problem. I haven't enough wool to do it , I didn't remember I had already done a couple of 6" already from the ball Blush so the decision is whether to frog it back to a 6" or take it up the the middle ( I have another couple of rows yet to do) and change wool for the second half. Just not sure if I can find something similar weight of wool . Pic to show... what colour would be best?

Sorry I've not been on for a little while. Been ridiculously busy with work bit have found time to make squares for Candy's Hugs, which I shall post on Friday when I get paid. I was so sorry to hear poor Zombie lost her battle and my thoughts, prayers and love go to her family and friends xx

SevenTillFour · 13/02/2017 15:10

Afternoon, all Brew.
ChippingIn Haven't yet tried the bamboos, I'm afraid. Went to my sister for the weekend and took a Little Hug to finish, but ran out of wool. Then darling niece (4) decided she wanted to "learn" so much chanting of "needle in, wool round, new stitch up and old stitch off" using some 10mm needles and DK! It was hilarious, but she got bored after 20 nano-seconds Smile. Will start another Candy square on the bamboos tonight and enjoy the peace!
Madison's tea shop does sound nice, shame it's nowhere near GU after all Sad...

minisoksmakehardwork · 13/02/2017 17:34

I have purchased crochet hooks today. And wool. I am hoping I can master crochet as I love working with wool, even if dh rolls his eyes and asks me how old I am.

I can kind of knit, when I find my needles. But I have a book full of crochet patterns amongst others which are just begging to be brought to life.

Spindelina · 13/02/2017 17:37

Malcolm I can blame you, right? I've just ordered more yarn. I couldn't decide what to get, so I got them all. Except Meadow, which was out of stock. At £1.36 a ball, it'd be daft not to. right? Right?
