Welcome to our second thread, may it be as vibrantly riotous as the first!

Anyone reading this thinking Shall I? Can I? Yes you can! :) We would love to have you on board, from someone who is keen to learn crochet or knitting to the more experienced, ALL are welcome here. And a lack of funds is no barrier, we have wonderful donors who want to take part and need a crafter, so we can send you yarn, needles and hooks if necessary. It is all about being inclusive and team work.

So let's crack on!

This then a C&P of the crafting info from thread one.

Our lovely Zombie (who has said she doesn’t mind being outed as Candy) has long been a supporter of Woolly Hugs, bless her for it! Recently she made a very kind donation to us, and we would love to start an Ongoing project to honour this remarkable woman, who we have both had the privilege of meeting, dancing and drinking with. wine wine She is utterly fab-u-lous. :)

After a chat with Zombie we have made a plan which she loves. We would like to make comforting cosy blankets with love in every stitch for women going through treatment for breast and other cancers, and at times these may form part of palliative care. They will be called Candy’s Hugs.

Zombie is a bright and beautiful woman so we have chosen a palette to reflect this which we call Vibrant Riot; it is inspired too by a blanket that was made for her to give big hugs as she goes through treatments.

Will you join with us? If you would like to be involved in any way, we’d love to have you on board. Please post on this thread and PM with your offers: crafting, donating, need wool, etc, we can help you with all of it.

The yarn is Stylecraft Special DK. Just this please for consistency, and in these colours...

Vibrant Riot Palette
Boysenberry
Claret
Empire
Fuchsia
Grass
Kelly green
Lavender
Lime
Lipstick
Magenta
Meadow
Petrol
Plum
Pomegranate
Saffron
Sherbet
Shrimp
Spice
Turquoise
Tomato
Violet

Squares to be 12 inch or 6 inch, crochet or knitted equally welcome, please use 4mm hook or needles. No blocking necessary and please sew in ends, and make sure any colour changes are firmly knotted.

All crafting abilities genuinely welcome, squares made by beginner or expert will be equally cherished. Simple, complex, single colour, mixed colour. It really is the love and thought that counts.

If you would like to learn how to knit or crochet in 2017, let's do it! We have help for the complete beginner here…. And are on hand to help talk you through as well. YouTube has lots of tutorials, you WILL find one that suits! smile

If you feel ambitious and would like to make a whole blanket, then that is wonderful, we are aiming for blankets approx 48 inches by 60 inches, certainly no smaller.

Candy’s Hugs will be an ongoing project, our first posting date is to be January 28th. Do message for posting info when ready.

We are on Facebook - Woolly Hugs and Twitter too @Woolly_Hugs both are good ways to keep in touch.

Thank you so much xx

Thanks

48 years old, knitting since I was about 5, taught myself to crochet at 30. I didn't really get going with the crochet until a couple of years ago when I realised that Woolly Huggers that hooked got more squares done more quickly!

I am terribly slow though - if I go too fast, I become the slackest hooker in the world Blush

Spindelina · 15/01/2017 20:03

Pop do you need to hold that in place with a frame or wotnot? Or do you work around the edge and it magically turns into a square? I know nothing about crochet?

CaptainBraandPants · 15/01/2017 20:07

Right, did this work?

K&P I have PM'd you.

MrsHathaway · 15/01/2017 20:09

Yes!

But I could see them last time

FireflyGirl · 15/01/2017 20:16

I am 32, been crocheting about 3 years since seeing a Wooly Hugs thread. I learned using YouTube tutorials so I'm not great!

Can any hookers help me - I'm doing the victoriana lace square, but have lost the start of my round, so I've moved from 6 into 7 but I don't know how to get it back so I can't finish the square, iyswim - it wI'll be wonky. Pics attached to try to explain better!

About 60".

Spindelina not at all. The first few rounds after the "circle" part sort of pull it into the square shape, and I'm building up the corners with longer stitches iyswim.

Loving everyone's photos of all, things orange their squares!

PopGoesTheFuckingWeasel · 15/01/2017 20:18

Captain that third square ROCKS! You've just finalized it...my hair WILL be that color in February. May I please steal the pic?

FireflyGirl · 15/01/2017 20:21

This is where I think I have lost it. The left hand side is fine, 4 holes after the big one to the corner, but then by the time I get to the right hand side, I've started into round 7 but haven't completed round 6 and moved into it, I've just suddenly appeared there!

PopGoesTheFuckingWeasel · 15/01/2017 20:27

Firefly did you turn when you shouldn't have?

PopGoesTheFuckingWeasel · 15/01/2017 20:29

Personally, if you can bear it, I would frog back to round 5. A bobby pin or a paperclip is useful in the absence of a stitch marker (I use my hair😁) so you don't lose your place

PopGoesTheFuckingWeasel · 15/01/2017 20:49

My BF painted this for me- she knows mw so well! And...DH has agreed to a feature wall in these colors!

Not crochet related...but had to share!

CaptainBraandPants · 15/01/2017 20:52

Yay! I finally managed to post my photos. MrsH - I assume you are on the app? I think my first failure wasn't my fault but an app failure. The rest were all down to me though.

Pop you are welcome to steal my photo, on the condition we get to see your hair after it's been done. Deal?
Firefly I agree with Pop (again). I would frog back to round 5 and redo. It'll look lovely when it is less, er, wonky. Are we allowed to use that word now?

MadisonAvenue · 15/01/2017 20:55

First chance I've had to check in properly today I think. I have managed to knit a square while watching the football this afternoon though, not sure if I should send it as there wasn't love in every stitch - there was ranting and swearing going into every one until my team equalised. Husband said that my needles were a blur.

Just to answer the age question. 47 here, I was taught to knit by my mother when I was very young but had no patience so very quickly gave up. A few years ago I bought needles, yarn and a beginner's book with all good intentions of teaching myself a bit more than the basics but it all sat in a cupboard until I saw on here about Woolly Hugs just a year ago.

DramaAlpaca · 15/01/2017 20:57

Wow, you crafty ladies are amazing!

I might have to see if I can locate a crochet hook. I said on the last thread I can't knit or crochet and I can't - but I did learn a bit as a child so it'll be just like riding a bike won't it? Grin

CaptainBraandPants · 15/01/2017 21:00

Drama yes, just like riding a bike, but with less chance of injury. Unless you poke yourself in the eye with the crochet hook. no, no, I've never done that

FireflyGirl · 15/01/2017 21:03

I honestly don't know what I've done, Pop

Ugh, much as it pains me, I think you two are right. This hole in round 5 is too big, so might well be the problem! Ribbit, ribbit...

I would love to take part in this! It would be an honour and a privilege to do something in appreciation of the lovely Zombie! Her posts here have been inspirational, heartwarming and heartbreaking in equal measure.

PopGoesTheFuckingWeasel · 15/01/2017 21:06

Firefly I feel your pain- just had to frog over 50 v stitches! Hang on in there!

Sittingunderafrostysky · 15/01/2017 21:09

Aha, a new thread.

I'm 45, and was taught to knit by my mum. She used to make all our school uniform, and knitted all my jumpers. I'm very out of practise, but it's flooding back.

Laniakea · 15/01/2017 21:25

finally got around to posting mine today!

I did three 6 inch squares which look fine & a 12 inch which I'm a bit worried won't block very well. Feel free not to use it! Grin

BaggyCheeks · 15/01/2017 21:46

Found you all!

I'm just turned 27, I learned to crochet and knit when I was pregnant with DD 3 years ago. My mum taught me the knitting, my internet taught me the crocheting. I'm definitely better at crochet, working with two needles makes me go cross eyed and confuses my fingers.

I'm working on what's turned into a 12" square, the pineapple square ended up 9" so rather than scrap it I've been adding rounds of treble crochet to bump it up. I'll have to order more yarn though, I've run out of the Petrol, Claret and Violet I had left over from when I made my Sophie blanket (loving yours Pop Grin ), and getting low on Meadow. I have a yellow but I don't think it's one of the approved shades.

I'm turning into quite the crochet machine between this, a baby blanket and my temperature blanket Grin

PopGoesTheFuckingWeasel · 15/01/2017 21:49

Baggy pics!!!! I'm on the Tulip round atm...past the "round which is very involved" thank Derek! 😁😁😁

BaggyCheeks · 15/01/2017 22:04

This was mine when it was finished but before I blocked it Pop, I loved making it and was quite sad to give it away when Christmas happened!
