Welcome to our second thread, may it be as vibrantly riotous as the first!

Anyone reading this thinking Shall I? Can I? Yes you can! :) We would love to have you on board, from someone who is keen to learn crochet or knitting to the more experienced, ALL are welcome here. And a lack of funds is no barrier, we have wonderful donors who want to take part and need a crafter, so we can send you yarn, needles and hooks if necessary. It is all about being inclusive and team work.

So let's crack on!

This then a C&P of the crafting info from thread one.

Our lovely Zombie (who has said she doesn’t mind being outed as Candy) has long been a supporter of Woolly Hugs, bless her for it! Recently she made a very kind donation to us, and we would love to start an Ongoing project to honour this remarkable woman, who we have both had the privilege of meeting, dancing and drinking with. wine wine She is utterly fab-u-lous. :)

After a chat with Zombie we have made a plan which she loves. We would like to make comforting cosy blankets with love in every stitch for women going through treatment for breast and other cancers, and at times these may form part of palliative care. They will be called Candy’s Hugs.

Zombie is a bright and beautiful woman so we have chosen a palette to reflect this which we call Vibrant Riot; it is inspired too by a blanket that was made for her to give big hugs as she goes through treatments.

Will you join with us? If you would like to be involved in any way, we’d love to have you on board. Please post on this thread and PM with your offers: crafting, donating, need wool, etc, we can help you with all of it.

The yarn is Stylecraft Special DK. Just this please for consistency, and in these colours...

Vibrant Riot Palette
Boysenberry
Claret
Empire
Fuchsia
Grass
Kelly green
Lavender
Lime
Lipstick
Magenta
Meadow
Petrol
Plum
Pomegranate
Saffron
Sherbet
Shrimp
Spice
Turquoise
Tomato
Violet

Squares to be 12 inch or 6 inch, crochet or knitted equally welcome, please use 4mm hook or needles. No blocking necessary and please sew in ends, and make sure any colour changes are firmly knotted.

All crafting abilities genuinely welcome, squares made by beginner or expert will be equally cherished. Simple, complex, single colour, mixed colour. It really is the love and thought that counts.

If you would like to learn how to knit or crochet in 2017, let's do it! We have help for the complete beginner here…. And are on hand to help talk you through as well. YouTube has lots of tutorials, you WILL find one that suits! smile

If you feel ambitious and would like to make a whole blanket, then that is wonderful, we are aiming for blankets approx 48 inches by 60 inches, certainly no smaller.

Candy’s Hugs will be an ongoing project, our first posting date is to be January 28th. Do message for posting info when ready.

We are on Facebook - Woolly Hugs and Twitter too @Woolly_Hugs both are good ways to keep in touch.

Thank you so much xx

Thanks

Evening!
the witching hour of 10 o clock has arrived. I was trying to get 4 squares done today, ( so I could start on a rainbow) but only half way up #4 .They need a bit of a flatten :)
Just catching up on the thread now
ikiboo - don't be daft - they say in the OP All crafting abilities genuinely welcome, squares made by beginner or expert will be equally cherished. Simple, complex, single colour, mixed colour. It really is the love and thought that counts
Captain - they are lovely, especially that diagonal stripe
All the squares are so lovely.
Baggy and Pop - they are stunning, no other words

Baggy wow!!! Did you use DK? Mind me asking how big it was when you finished it? I'm using the SSDK and a 4.5 hook...

BaggyCheeks · 15/01/2017 22:23

Pop I did! It's why I had the yarn for the Candy's Hugs lying around. It was over 1 meter square, I didn't get an exact measurement of it though, other than "fecking huge". Longer than 4yo DS.

UnbornMortificado · 15/01/2017 22:25

Checking in, I love seeing all the photos.

SaladDressing · 15/01/2017 22:29

Finally finished a 12" square. It's a bit wibbly wobbly but given that this time last week I hadn't crocheted in 30yrs it's a half decent attempt.

So yes, all of you that are debating getting started please come and join in. Just don't plan on getting anything done around the house ever again. Smile

Hi all 😊

Some lovely offerings!

Baggy that's lovely, I hope it's appreciated in its new home!

POP is yours for you or a gift? You'll have to PM me your address, I have to see your house, especially after you've painted your feature wall 😬

I'm 27.

plus a score

Exit we love having you here cleaning up after us knitting, crocheting or not! But I agree with the others, that crocheting would be easier on your hands than knitting. But if you fling it across the room & decide to try knitting, then buy bamboo needles, they're really light and lovely to use.

bookbook · 15/01/2017 22:32

you see, maybe I should take up crotchet again - everyones squares are so tidy and flat < wails quietly >

VittysCardigan · 15/01/2017 22:45

3 granny squares & I sewed all the ends in on all my others

That's great Salad! I love the reds and oranges together.

Exit I agree that crocheting is easier on the hands than knitting. My right hand does all the work.

@DramaAlpaca Just like riding a bike! Practise and more practise and it'll be great Grin

CaptainBraandPants · 15/01/2017 22:55

More beautiful squares.
Baggy I love your Sophie, I don't knew how you could bear to give her away. I have a half finished Sophie in a bag somewhere. I decided I didn't like the colours, so intended to start again with different colours, but I've never got round to it.
Managed one more square tonight, let's see if I manage to post a pic of it.

Chipping it's to be sent off for the TeamZombie drive!

Baggy that just reassured me- with a border, I'll easily get it up to 60". Thank you!

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 16/01/2017 01:22

Laniakea. That's a lovely square, great colour combo!

POP Oh really? I must have misunderstood something previously, I thought you were doing it alongside things for Candy's Hugs. Wow. How are you feeling now? Still sore?

TwoAndTwoEqualsChaos · 16/01/2017 01:56

Thanks Pop and Book (the middle links were broken, Pop, but plenty of ideas with the other ones).

My Grandmother taught me to knit as a Child, Book, though I have done very little in recent years. I can follow a basic pattern and I know that my tension is usually a bit tight ... I have Four Children and a muppet of a STBEXH, I just thought it would be nice to look beyond myself and that such compact projects were more achievable than many and (might) help with relaxation, a major problem I have.

PopGoesTheFuckingWeasel · 16/01/2017 02:06

Chipping I started crocheting squares for my own blanket to "join in" while I waited for my TeamZombie yarn to arrive.

I really wanted to complete a whole blanket for the project as, when I first started to crochet, I started a blanket for a dear friend who sadly passed from cancer before I could finish it. I never completed it Sad. This is the main reason that this project is so close to my heart. That and, with every stitch, I feel like I'm saying a big "screw you" to the big C.

And when this one is finished, I'll start on another one! 😁😁

MrsHathaway · 16/01/2017 08:01

you see, maybe I should take up crotchet again - everyones squares are so tidy and flat < wails quietly >

My most recent "square" is indeed tidy, but it's a tube. Blush

bookbook · 16/01/2017 08:05

MrsH - the wool is so soft, virtually every edge curls in. When uncurled, they are square - I have been flattening them under a heavy book, which works. I know they don't want us to block them , but it goes against the grain to leave them alone ! :)

Fiderer · 16/01/2017 08:08

Grin My wool just arrived.

I haven't got my German head on yet & was in the middle of rowing with my son about not taking the later train to school so he could skive 30 mins off English (agree it's pointless as his E is better than the teacher's but still - reports are being written this week)

So I answered the door in a tizz and said to the postman in English "Blimey you're early" and he answered "Always early for you". He's about 12 & v sweet.

What a nice way to start the day. Kicked lazy boy out on time, friendly postman, wool.

bookbook · 16/01/2017 08:29

yay wool ! :)

chur · 16/01/2017 08:51

I've just ordered my wool! Very excited, although worried my novice attempt will look a bit crap next to everyone else's efforts.

I managed to knit a scarf four years ago but that's about my sum total of experience, thank goodness it's the thought that counts rather than the skill!

Chur any square with love & Hugs and swearing is a good square 😊

Fid (post row) definitely a good start to the week! 😁

Two maybe try the links again, some of them you need to be signed up to the website (free) to see them.

BookBook. We will have none of that sort of talk old knitting buddy! You and MrsH need to know that edge curling/tubing is totally normal! I just uncurl them of the sofa so they're nice and flat, take a photo if I remember, then put them in the bag. Where they curl up again until they're all flattened out for posting. I'm sure as soon as the package is opened again they curl back up! They're fine once the hookers do their bit!

POP. Oh I see, it doesn't take much to confuse me! 😁 I read what you'd written about your friend 💐 I hope doing this helps. Maybe one day you'll finish your friends blanket & think of the good times when it's keeping you warm x

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 16/01/2017 09:32

K&P. Yes please! A couple of those monsters should help! 😊

BaggyCheeks · 16/01/2017 09:39

K&P I'll have two if that's ok.

Hoping to get to the haberdashers in town while DS is at nursery this afternoon, and post off the squares I've finished. Thinking some new colours to work with would be nice. Something from the brighter end perhaps.
