Welcome to our second thread, may it be as vibrantly riotous as the first!

Anyone reading this thinking Shall I? Can I? Yes you can! :) We would love to have you on board, from someone who is keen to learn crochet or knitting to the more experienced, ALL are welcome here. And a lack of funds is no barrier, we have wonderful donors who want to take part and need a crafter, so we can send you yarn, needles and hooks if necessary. It is all about being inclusive and team work.

So let's crack on!

This then a C&P of the crafting info from thread one.

Our lovely Zombie (who has said she doesn’t mind being outed as Candy) has long been a supporter of Woolly Hugs, bless her for it! Recently she made a very kind donation to us, and we would love to start an Ongoing project to honour this remarkable woman, who we have both had the privilege of meeting, dancing and drinking with. wine wine She is utterly fab-u-lous. :)

After a chat with Zombie we have made a plan which she loves. We would like to make comforting cosy blankets with love in every stitch for women going through treatment for breast and other cancers, and at times these may form part of palliative care. They will be called Candy’s Hugs.

Zombie is a bright and beautiful woman so we have chosen a palette to reflect this which we call Vibrant Riot; it is inspired too by a blanket that was made for her to give big hugs as she goes through treatments.

Will you join with us? If you would like to be involved in any way, we’d love to have you on board. Please post on this thread and PM with your offers: crafting, donating, need wool, etc, we can help you with all of it.

The yarn is Stylecraft Special DK. Just this please for consistency, and in these colours...

Vibrant Riot Palette
Boysenberry
Claret
Empire
Fuchsia
Grass
Kelly green
Lavender
Lime
Lipstick
Magenta
Meadow
Petrol
Plum
Pomegranate
Saffron
Sherbet
Shrimp
Spice
Turquoise
Tomato
Violet

Squares to be 12 inch or 6 inch, crochet or knitted equally welcome, please use 4mm hook or needles. No blocking necessary and please sew in ends, and make sure any colour changes are firmly knotted.

All crafting abilities genuinely welcome, squares made by beginner or expert will be equally cherished. Simple, complex, single colour, mixed colour. It really is the love and thought that counts.

If you would like to learn how to knit or crochet in 2017, let's do it! We have help for the complete beginner here…. And are on hand to help talk you through as well. YouTube has lots of tutorials, you WILL find one that suits! smile

If you feel ambitious and would like to make a whole blanket, then that is wonderful, we are aiming for blankets approx 48 inches by 60 inches, certainly no smaller.

Candy’s Hugs will be an ongoing project, our first posting date is to be January 28th. Do message for posting info when ready.

We are on Facebook - Woolly Hugs and Twitter too @Woolly_Hugs both are good ways to keep in touch.

Thank you so much xx

Thanks

I'm late 40s. Crocheted as a child then completely stopped, re-learned about 5 years ago. Don't know many other people IRL who knit or crochet.

glenthebattleostrich · 15/01/2017 15:42

I'm 38, my friend who I'm starting a stitch n bitch group with is 34.

I've been weighlaid by decorating and making a sock monkey but will finish off my very first granny square tonight then I have some bits to post on monday, didn't make it to the post office on Friday.

ExitPursuedBySpartacus · 15/01/2017 16:29

Oh I don't knit or anything. I just like to hang around making a nuisance of myself.

I am old enough to know better. 57

Pengling · 15/01/2017 16:34

I'm 31, been crocheting a couple of years now. I know a few people my age that crochet/knit, and I've got at least one friend hooked pun intended in the last couple of months Grin

AmaDablam · 15/01/2017 16:39

I'm 39. Learnt to crochet as a child then took it up again about 10 years ago when my friends started having babies and I wanted to do some handmade gifts. I belonged to a stitch and bitch group for a couple of years in my early 30s and though there were a variety of ages, by far the majority were under 45. These days I don't know anyone my sort of age irl who knits or crochets but generally if I mention it I get "oh that's so cool, I wish I could do that" rather than "ugh that's a bit old fashioned".

Marcipex · 15/01/2017 16:39

I'm 56 but only learnt a few years ago, from tutorials on the web.
One of the things I love about Woolly Hugs is that my experimental squares now actually have a real purpose.

kelper · 15/01/2017 16:46

I've just found a massive grannie square I was making with the aim of turning it into a shrug thing, its a zillion different types of yarn though, I don't think any of it was Stylecraft either!
It looks really shonky though, back from when I first started grannie squares!
DS wants me to make him a bag out of some gold stylecraft he chose at the shop the other day, it has to be a rucksack 🙄
It looks like it might be coming up a bit small though, the pattern says use a 9mm hook, I only had an 8mm, and in the end I've started it with a 4.5mm, so god knows what it will look like, Ill post a pic if I ever finish it ;)

bookbook · 15/01/2017 16:49

Exit - you were very useful, picking up all the little ends of wool on the end of the last thread ! Worst bit of it all Grin

kelper · 15/01/2017 16:50

Sorry, missed the age question must read thread before posting I'm 37 (how did I get to be 37?! Thought I was only about 20something)
and have been crocheting for a couple of years, can't get the hang of knitting at all, despite many attempts, and having a 97 year old grannie who is still knitting arran jumpers 😳

VittysCardigan · 15/01/2017 16:55

All my stuff was looking untidy so I bought this in Wilkos today. It's the perfect size & only £4! I also bought the book because I love his work & it's just so nice

PopGoesTheFuckingWeasel · 15/01/2017 16:58

PopGoesTheFuckingWeasel · 15/01/2017 17:02

Vitty all,my Zombie yarn is in a Primark carrier bag! 😁😁😁

Yddraigoldragon · 15/01/2017 17:02

55 here. Been a hooker since the summer, after admiring my 20 something DD's work, I borrowed a hook and yarn and picked it up from you tube.

VittysCardigan · 15/01/2017 17:04

Pop - brown paper - environmentally friendly + neat

flutterworc · 15/01/2017 17:21

Hello - I'm home. Irritatingly DS's actual social life got in the way of crocheting. I'm booky jr. I'm theoretically 35, but as Mr Bookbook has told everyone since the beginning of time, I was born 40, so am significantly older than my own Mum. Am only a toddler for crochet though - this is my 3rd month since learning!

PopGoesTheFuckingWeasel · 15/01/2017 17:23

Flutter I like the idea of going by crochet-age...I was four yesterday! 😁😁😁

bookbook · 15/01/2017 17:24

Two
I'm not really using a proper pattern at all. I knitted a tension square with the wool, at what I thought would be right size, then refined how many stitches and rows made a 6" square, then got going.
I have adapted patterns by putting a texture on with just knit and purl , adding moss stitch at the edges to make up the size if it needs it. Have you knitted much, or a beginner?
here is a basic one
garter stitch square
as an example , that says to use 33 stitches, but I actually use 30 for the same size :)
I added a link to knitting stitches up thread, but have also seen this , which has a video tutorial as well, which I didn't click on !

ExitPursuedBySpartacus · 15/01/2017 17:48

46 here, my friend taught me a simple granny square last year. My mum actually bought be a book for my birthday. I couldn't follow the instructions but with some coaching from you guys and a bella coco tutorial ive managed a few different squares, will post a pic later.

bookbook · 15/01/2017 17:53

oh, they look painful Exit - I'm not sure? My dear long dead Mum knitted all her life with RA , but her fingers never were as bad as that. In fact her Dr always thought that the knitting kept them from getting worse, with the movement
