Welcome to our Chernobyl project for 2017!! So glad to have you on board!

For the last three years we have been making warm, comforting Little Hugs for Belarusian teenagers and children visiting the UK for recuperative holidays during the summer with the fabulous charity the Chernobyl Children's Project and Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline. Photos from the Leeds group can be seen here.. and our finished blankets from last year here…

Each year these marvellous charities bring children who live in the most contaminated area near the Chernobyl reactor over to the UK. In summer, when the dust causes radiation levels to rise, it becomes even more important for as many children as possible to leave their contaminated homeland for a few weeks of fresh air and clean food. The rates of childhood cancer are very high, the most common cancers being thyroid and leukemia. Coming to the UK for a four week break increases their immunity against the awful disease by up to 3 years when they return home. Often these children are in remission. Sadly though there is a high chance of these children falling ill again. They all suffer living in such difficult conditions and with very little.

Last year 36 children, teens and their interpreters went home with a beautiful Woolly Hug. This year we are keen to help even more groups, so Liverpool, Gloucester/Leeds (same Leeds group but this year spending 2 weeks at each location) Portsmouth and Helpston,Northampton.

That is about 70+ blankets!! Shock Wine

With your help we know we can do this

Please do join us, here’s how..

Crafting Information

  • We would like 12" squares in bright and cheery Stylecraft Special DK colours.
  • PLEASE AVOID USING black, bright green, bright pink, browns, greys, citron, sunshine, fiesta, jaffa and any pale pastels, white or cream for practical reasons. This will help squares fit together more easily.
  • Make squares in a neutral colour theme, or more specifically for a boy or girl. As much as we don’t like to think of colour as being gender specific, these children may.
  • We will be happy to accept 6" squares if making a 12" one feels too much.
  • Crochet or knitted, 4mm hook or needles. Single colour, mixed colour, simple, complex. No blocking and please sew in pesky ends.
  • If needed, we can supply yarn. Let us know if we can send to you.
  • Posting of squares please to the South Coast address, PM if you need it. Star

If you think you’d like to make a whole blanket that is WONDERFUL, but please contact us first. We will be asking for gender neutral blankets which are 48 inches by 60m, but would just like to chat to you first, thank you!

Supporting with funds
If anyone would like to donate funds to support this, we would be so grateful. Please PM us for the donation info. Thank you xx

Can anyone help with extras?
There are a few extras which we will be collecting too alongside squares, items which really help, if you would like to add in any of these we would love to receive them for the children, thank you, bless you.

Underwear aged 10 plus. New only

  • Adult size socks (one size fits all) new
  • Toothbrushes, single packed please
  • Hairbrushes
  • Toiletries, toothpaste, shower gel, shampoo etc, but not bars of soap please.
  • Sanitary Towels
  • Plasters
  • Vitamins, please check suitable for 10 years+
  • Any little luxuries that teens might love, eg hair clips, make up bits, stickers etc.

If you would like to add 50p in when you post squares for ice creams that would be so kind, we will split any money we receive between the groups.

Last posting of squares (plus whole blankets) and any extras is Saturday 8th April

No later please as we have to get on and sort at the end of that following week. Thank you. The rush will be on as the first group, Portsmouth arrive in May.

What a big ask! Good grief!

But the fabulous Woolly Hug crew never fail to amaze, last year was an astonishing team effort, as the photo shows, we know that together we can do this.

On behalf of these children and their families, a huge THANK YOU.
Actually, thank you doesn't really come close.

Us xxx

The number of blankets are in double figures now K&P!!

Good morning all! Long dog walk and now coffee and crochet. Husband's out cycling and the 'little one' (who is close to 6ft) is at the gym so the house is mine all mine (although I'm on the floor and the dog's stretched out on the sofa)...

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 19/03/2017 13:20

Mhw. Very, very impressive! Somethings not quite right though. You are going in for one ball at a time and have so much to send, I have yarn in every colour, in every corner of the house & my stack to send is pitiful. Maybe I should just get the yarn sent directly to you!! 🙃

Spindelina. The OS stash is in a very pretty country, maybe one day we can go for a Woolly Retreat 😊

Amethyst. That sounds lovely. I'll save that little treat for a reward after I force myself to do some nasty paperwork that's glaring at me! It's definitely a rabbit hole, but it's a very, very lovely rabbit hole!

Drop. Those squares look great!

Norman. I feel a little 'On Thread' party coming on! 😊 I hope the Birthday Fairy brings you the Packs. LOL @ commissioning WBW to make them. It's definitely the only way I'd get one!!

MrsDG. CTC is easy, once you get the hang of it, and quite rewarding as the second half 'makes up' quickly. But once you can do a Granny, The Crochet World is your oyster. Willow & Marigold are popular patterns.

LEM. Great square! I love blues.

WBW. Have you sorted Woollyback out? How are you feeling today? Can I offer more 🍫, but maybe just Brew for now! But there's plenty of 🍹🍾🥃🍷🥃🍺🍹 should you feel the need! 😊

K&P. Will definitely take a look at the Easter sale 😊

Blanket count is going well...😊

Madison 😳 The 'Little One' was out of the house early. Is there a girl on the scene? You can't blame the dog, it needs to recover in comfort after being dragged out for hours! 🤣

Spindelina · 19/03/2017 14:15

WWYD?

a) frog two 12" rows to release it
b) feed most of a ball of Kelly Green through the spike stitch
c) create two more peskies by cutting it
d) leave it as a feature

(I've gone for c, but d is very tempting!)

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 19/03/2017 14:20

C.

No question. But curse my stupidity. This, you will note, is not theoretical. I'm wearing the t shirt!

DoubleR · 19/03/2017 14:29

Aaah, I'm so frustrated! This is my third attempt at a 12 inch square, they keep being too big. So I started this one at 11.5 but it's grown, a lot and now it's over 13 inches so I'm going to have to undo the whole thing Sad .

TheWoollybacksWife · 19/03/2017 14:40

Chipping Im grateful for your concern and the virtual Chocolate. I think I'm grumpy because I'm not sleeping well. There is no excuse for the Woollyback however, he's just a grumpy bugger 😂

Mhw02 · 19/03/2017 14:45

Chipping I had loads of yarn, It's just on this fourth blanket I've been running out. You see, I was going to do a big order from Wool Warehouse, but for reasons related to people not being at home and the local Sorting Office moving to somewhere not remotely local, it wasn't convenient. So I thought, I'll buy one ball to tide me over until I can put the big order in, but the convenient time has yet to materialise, so I keep buying one ball at a time!

I actually have a reasonable stash of merino wool, but that's no use for this project!

Mhw02 · 19/03/2017 15:11

And, ok, I do have a stylecraft stash, just not enough of the colours I need for this particular blanket...

Welcome to our Chernobyl project for 2017
ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 19/03/2017 15:34

RR 🙁 How annoying. However. I'd just send it. I'm sure one of the Master Crafters wil be able to get it into a blanket! In this yarn I need 70 stitches for 12" plain knitting, but I knit tightly & adjust if I'm not just plain knitting. Hopefully now you have some idea how many you need? When you say 'started at' at what point was that? I really think you need a 2-3 inches before you can see what width it will be. Fingers crossed for the next one 💐

WBW. Hope you can find a way of getting back to sleeping well again. I never sleep well, but I can imagine that if you usually do, not getting that must be awful. As for the Grumpy Bugger - better the devil you know at least 🤣

Mwh all that & you didn't have a suitable colour 🤣 I totally understand re the 'large order/not good timing/one ball scenario. It's me to a T. Your stash is making me want to dive into it!

Spindelina · 19/03/2017 15:41

Grrrrr, RR.

When I'm doing something new, I aim for about 10-11", depending on how new. Then I can add a border as required.

TheWoollybacksWife · 19/03/2017 16:10

RR could you do a knitted corner to corner square? Start with 2 stitches and increase one stitch at the beginning of every row. Once it measures 11.5" - 12" across then decrease one stitch at the beginning of every row. It will then be a perfect square.

DoubleR · 19/03/2017 16:12

Thanks, I'm doing a 6 inch first to calm down. It's a crochet puff stitch Chipping so I mean the foundation chain was 11.5 inches, I'll take your advice Spindelina and start it at 10 inches, I think the puff stitch grows a lot because it's quite thick. Also I'd run out of the green wool so maybe there will be enough if it's slightly smaller.

DoubleR · 19/03/2017 16:16

I wish I could TheWoollybacksWife but I can't knit and I can only crochet two types of stitches. I'm planning to learn some more but because this project has a short deadline I thought I'd just get it done asap. Although it doesn't seem to be working out that way Confused

NormansNipple · 19/03/2017 16:49

My first c2c squares

I might try something else now...

Welcome to our Chernobyl project for 2017
NormansNipple · 19/03/2017 16:51

RR I would send that square in. The wonderful construction people can probably match it against a few smaller squares to balance it out. Don't despair! Flowers

TheWoollybacksWife · 19/03/2017 16:51

Sorry RR. I could have sworn that was knitted moss stitch Blush - good job I'm picking up my new varifiocals tomorrow Grin. Maybe try a C2C crochet square.

DoubleR · 19/03/2017 19:33

Ooo ok, if you think it might be alright then I'll carry on with it and try and tighten up the tension so it doesn't grow any more. That way I'll be able to knock out another one in time for the deadline too. So in that case I'm back to my original problem which is that I've run out of green wool to finish it, I only have violet. Should I use that or get some more green sent? I'll post a pic in a bit ( I'm currently on DS's floor waiting for him to go to sleep!)

MadisonAvenue · 19/03/2017 19:40

DoubleR I'm new to crochet and I'm finding it difficult to judge just how long a foundation chain should be when working rows. Often I aim well below 12" and end up frogging it as after a few rows it's closer to 13. Good thing it grows so quickly!

MadisonAvenue · 19/03/2017 19:45

Oh, and Chipping it's the dog who decides how far we'll walk - he leads, I follow - so he's only got himself to blame Grin He walked me for 4 miles before 9am....
No, there's no girl yet. Just football, football and football, hence why he was out early because he needed to be back as our team kicked off at noon.

Norman they're fantastic!

TheWoollybacksWife · 19/03/2017 19:47

Is it Grass Green? I can send you some of that. I bought a shed load to make a Minecraft blanket for my great-nephew last year and have loads left.

bookbook · 19/03/2017 19:56

Evening!
Just needed to pop in and look at everyones squares - wonderful.
Been rather busy today - allotment this morning, and the whole family for the afternoon and evening meal. Just waved bye to them all , so can get back to Woolly Hugs.
My fingers are drumming though - I am not hopeful my new load of wool will arrive tomorrow - I have had the email to say it has been dispatched. But I am not her on Tuesday at all , so what is the betting it comes Tuesday !
DoubleR - I am a looseish knitter, and use 60 stitches for a 12" . Lovely green combo, green would be good, but Violet may well look better - can you hold it against it? ( hope the floor is comfy...)
Norm - lovely stripes on there - isn't c2c so much easier?
Madison - not worked anything out much with crotchet - looking at wool, and thinking it will do another round, it never seeming to grow from last time I measured - all those things I take for granted with knitting :)

DoubleR · 19/03/2017 19:58

TheWoollybacksWife , that would be fab, thanks Grin. The second stripe in is grass green so it would work nicely. I'll pm you my address.

DoubleR · 19/03/2017 20:18

Here is the violet next to where it would be, I'm open to suggestions it might work but I'm leaning towards taking up TheWoollybacksWife s kind offer and make it all green.

So my.mum has just been around for dinner. She is a difficult woman who lives alone and not in best of health. Day to day does very little. She was fascinated by my chernobyl squares. I tried to give her a refresher - she used to be an amazing knitter and also taught me to crochet many moons ago. She is left handed and her vision is poor but she has taken a ball of wool and a crochet hook to give it a go.

Am praying she can manage to see and work out what to do as it will give her some purpose. She is 85.

So thank you once again K &P and the lovely Candy for getting me involved with this wonderful wonderful project. What a legacy

NorksAreMessy · 19/03/2017 21:05

I have just bought some wool and needles for my lovely pal who is all fired up to start knitting for chernobbsies.
Also spent a weekend with another pal who couldnt escape the nagging!

Many squares coming!
