Welcome to our Chernobyl project for 2017!! So glad to have you on board!

For the last three years we have been making warm, comforting Little Hugs for Belarusian teenagers and children visiting the UK for recuperative holidays during the summer with the fabulous charity the Chernobyl Children's Project and Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline. Photos from the Leeds group can be seen here.. and our finished blankets from last year here…

Each year these marvellous charities bring children who live in the most contaminated area near the Chernobyl reactor over to the UK. In summer, when the dust causes radiation levels to rise, it becomes even more important for as many children as possible to leave their contaminated homeland for a few weeks of fresh air and clean food. The rates of childhood cancer are very high, the most common cancers being thyroid and leukemia. Coming to the UK for a four week break increases their immunity against the awful disease by up to 3 years when they return home. Often these children are in remission. Sadly though there is a high chance of these children falling ill again. They all suffer living in such difficult conditions and with very little.

Last year 36 children, teens and their interpreters went home with a beautiful Woolly Hug. This year we are keen to help even more groups, so Liverpool, Gloucester/Leeds (same Leeds group but this year spending 2 weeks at each location) Portsmouth and Helpston,Northampton.

That is about 70+ blankets!! Shock Wine

With your help we know we can do this

Please do join us, here’s how..

Crafting Information

  • We would like 12" squares in bright and cheery Stylecraft Special DK colours.
  • PLEASE AVOID USING black, bright green, bright pink, browns, greys, citron, sunshine, fiesta, jaffa and any pale pastels, white or cream for practical reasons. This will help squares fit together more easily.
  • Make squares in a neutral colour theme, or more specifically for a boy or girl. As much as we don’t like to think of colour as being gender specific, these children may.
  • We will be happy to accept 6" squares if making a 12" one feels too much.
  • Crochet or knitted, 4mm hook or needles. Single colour, mixed colour, simple, complex. No blocking and please sew in pesky ends.
  • If needed, we can supply yarn. Let us know if we can send to you.
  • Posting of squares please to the South Coast address, PM if you need it. Star

If you think you’d like to make a whole blanket that is WONDERFUL, but please contact us first. We will be asking for gender neutral blankets which are 48 inches by 60m, but would just like to chat to you first, thank you!

Supporting with funds
If anyone would like to donate funds to support this, we would be so grateful. Please PM us for the donation info. Thank you xx

Can anyone help with extras?
There are a few extras which we will be collecting too alongside squares, items which really help, if you would like to add in any of these we would love to receive them for the children, thank you, bless you.

Underwear aged 10 plus. New only

  • Adult size socks (one size fits all) new
  • Toothbrushes, single packed please
  • Hairbrushes
  • Toiletries, toothpaste, shower gel, shampoo etc, but not bars of soap please.
  • Sanitary Towels
  • Plasters
  • Vitamins, please check suitable for 10 years+
  • Any little luxuries that teens might love, eg hair clips, make up bits, stickers etc.

If you would like to add 50p in when you post squares for ice creams that would be so kind, we will split any money we receive between the groups.

Last posting of squares (plus whole blankets) and any extras is Saturday 8th April

No later please as we have to get on and sort at the end of that following week. Thank you. The rush will be on as the first group, Portsmouth arrive in May.

What a big ask! Good grief!

But the fabulous Woolly Hug crew never fail to amaze, last year was an astonishing team effort, as the photo shows, we know that together we can do this.

On behalf of these children and their families, a huge THANK YOU.
Actually, thank you doesn't really come close.

Us xxx

Excellent! Yarn support for all.

And I realise that this is enabling, rather than supporting, but book yes, you DO need every colour!

Plus, did you know there are three new colours coming out soon?!

A group for DP's sounds like an excellent idea, Spind. Mine saw the photo and just shook his head. Then later on, looked at me in utter bemusement whilst I was writing colours on yarn pegs and then promptly fell to the floor and pretended to have gone to sleep when I tried to explain what I was doing!!! Grin

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 17/03/2017 10:11

Joolly. My attention for 12" knitting or crochet, isn't great either. Plain coloured and plain squares are fabulous. If there aren't any plain squares the blankets would be far too hard on the eyes! However, if you are bored of doing the same thing, we could help you learn some new stitches.

bookbook. I think for me it feels so damn slow as I hate doing repetitive things, so apart from the fact it's slower as it grows, it's also slower to complete as I'm not so keen to actually pick it up and do it. But I do have to remind myself it's FOUR 6" squares.

Madison you should leave a note in the door 'Busy at the back of the house, please hammer on the door as if the house is on fire' 😂

Malcolm. Fabulous photo!! Thank you for sharing 😊 How do you intend to use your yarn pegs to keep you organised? I feel like I'm missing a trick there? I get that they're good for keeping a bit of each colour and choosing which colours to use, but not how they'll help with knowing what you actually have 'in stock'. I'm still undecided about what I'm going to do, but I'm thinking lolly sticks now - I had been thinking about knitting a square in each, but it's seeming like too much faff now. When I was in Costco yesterday they had a cheap plastic set of drawers thing which I could see being great for putting the matching colours in (blues in the blue drawer etc) but I don't have a cupboard it would fit in and I don't want it 'out'. I'd LOVE to just have the wool on open white shelves, but this house is the dustiest house I've ever lived in & its dark too (so from the road I think), so it's a non starter. I think I'll try to find nice clear plastic boxes (Perspex) and then find the shelving they fit. But I need to finish renovating before buying more furniture - which would get done more quickly if I was painting instead of chatting or crocheting Blush

Semaphorically · 17/03/2017 10:15

I think I have a yarn stash issue too, so I'm very keen to find out how to best organise it! I've limited myself to only DK yarn in the hope of reducing the variety (which maybe futile), and I've started yarn cards (I'm using those cards with holes in that are designed for embroidery thread) but I can see it all getting out of control quickly! How do you store yarn pegs?

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 17/03/2017 10:24

bookbook. Yes, you definitely need the range to help you choose colours. How flexible is the credit card feeling 😂 I love ordering through Woolwarehouse, they package their wool/yarn in organza bags, it's nice. Wisebadger are lovely to deal with (but no organza bags). I occasionally order from others. Demores have a postage free deal on until Sunday, but given how much the price of Stylecraft varies across the shops, postage free isn't always the cheapest overall option. What usually determines where I place my order is what other wool I need and who has it in stock. The other option is the Easter Auction, Zing has kindly donated a full Lollipop Set of Stylecraft colours. Isn't she lovely!

Malc. 😂

MalcolmTuckersOmniShambles · 17/03/2017 10:28

I'm going to store my yarn pegs in a clear Tupperware box which I can keep on my desk.

Chipping, I feel I may have misled you slightly! They won't show me what I've got in stock, but what I was doing previously was keeping yarn for different projects in separate bags, so I didn't actually know how much of each I had. Now I've got the pegs I'll a) be able to see what colours I've already got and b) have reorganised my bags into colours so blues in one, yellows in another, purples/pinks in yet another and so on. On the back of the pegs, I've written what colour pallets that colour belongs to (or left it blank if it doesn't!) so that I'll be able to see more easily whether I can use something for Candy's Hugs, Chernobyl, Kinship etc.

I'm hoping it'll work...

AmethystRaven · 17/03/2017 10:56

Wow Malcolm that is amazing. Can we all come to play at yours? Grin

Marcipex how sweet, I have an image of her wandering around holding her pomegranate ball like a baby!

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 17/03/2017 10:59

Malcolm. I'm sure it will (mostly). My issue with it (for me) was that it's just shows what I've had at one stage or another, not what colours I have right now. I was going to keep a spreadsheet, but decided it was too much work for very little gain. I also contemplated keeping a running tally on a little tag in the pegs grip. But likewise, too much hassle. Woolwarehouse delivers overnight usually and there's a shop in the next village over which usually has most colours in stock 😂

bookbook. Something else I use to choose colours is my Bag of Bits. I have a bag for Candy's Hugs & a bag for C2017. In each there are bits of all the permitted colours (that I have, I don't have all the C2017 permitted colours) and I love the colour combinations that just jump out at me. Things I might not have otherwise put together and colours that don't always look together when you have the whole balls next to each other.

SpiralArchitect · 17/03/2017 11:22

Blimey Malc, I thought my SSDK stash was big... Grin

LEM How are you feeling this morning??? I hope they don't make you do sitting-down stuff at work today!

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 17/03/2017 12:59

Malcolm. Actually, I think you might just be holding back on us Hmm

There's a surprising lack of part used balls Hmm.

Fess up! Where's the rest of the stash 😂

KnottyAndPistey · 17/03/2017 14:28

Chernobyl blanket number 8/70!

Thank you again for all these wonderful squares and to lovely KG for her marvellous construction skills. It's glorious! xxx

Afternoon all !
DH took me for lunch/ the day - and only just got in
Lovely blanket!
Malcolm - what a stash!
While out, went to look at wool :) - the colours were everything I already had, but did buy some nice Stylecraft Malabar cotton/silk mix to make another Little Hug - it was in the sale.....Blush (DH - "what is that for - you have loads?")
I then came home and ordered off Deramores ( did Amethyst come on here to say its free delivery until Sunday....) I have ordered 7 - Mustard/Spice/Cypress/Plum/Raspberry/Magenta and some more Aster , as I had run out of that...

bookbook · 17/03/2017 16:55

btw Chipping - which thread I am not sure ( we seem to be on 3 Woolly Hugs, don't we!) - you were asking about lights I think. Well I read, sew, cross stitch, embroider (as well as knit and now crotchet taking front seat at the mo) and I have a daylight reading lamp, which arches over the back of my chair. The head is frankly a tweak ugly , but it is a fabulous light for working Like This

WitchDancer · 17/03/2017 17:00

I'm seriously impressed with that stash Malcolm! DH looked and told me not to get ideas! Grin

K&P I posted my blanket today. Second class, so it should reach you early next week.

Malcolm can I come and play at your house please? Grin You should definitely make the moorland blanket for yourself. You deserve it! I was thinking of doing a double width cosy stripe for my bed, it will take ages though.

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 17/03/2017 19:58

K&P. Another lovely blanket 😊 💐 KG 🌸🍾🥂🍫 if you're not on MN (you should be 😁) I'm sure the vibes will reach you somewhere. Thank you.

bookbook. Hope you had a nice lunch 😊 Show DH Malcolm's stash! Good online ordering, we'll soon enable you into having the full range 😂

Thank you for the lamp link, I've saved it. I was hoping to find something a little more 'lamp' and a little less 'craft light' The trouble is this house is so damn small you can't 'lose' anything in the background, it's all 'A Piece'. At the old place a less than attractive lamp would have just been swallowed up by the overall look, no such luck here. I guess I could crochet A Big Cover for it 😂

Norman. Until it arrives at HQ I'll keep my fingers well crossed.

💐🍫 for putting it in the post. Well done!

I can't believe you're contemplating a double one for your bed. It'll be AMAZING, but blimey....

While we wait for the lottery funds to be sorted for the Woolly Retreat, maybe we could just have long weekends at Malcolm's, I'm sure her & her DH wouldn't mind...

MalcolmTuckersOmniShambles · 17/03/2017 20:08

The more the merrier, Chipping! I have 5 DC's so I'm used to a full house, a few extra bodies will hardly be noticed!

Let the hooking and knitting commence! Yarn for all!!! 🍾🥂🍸🎉🎊

DropZoneOne · 17/03/2017 21:04

Malcom wow, is that all the colours?! They're all new balls though, aren't they? So is there a secret WIP stash too ;-)

Chipping I did try to go for a rainbow, but was being guided by Candy's colours and may have missed a few good ones. I think Aster may be needed along with Lipstick. I could really do with a decent yarn shop locally, but the only one doing SSDK has mainly pastel colours and no Candy's colours at all. They look so different in real life compared to online.

I'm doing a 12" C2C in saffron, spice and tomato - those looked so good together. Currently at about 9" and getting bored but will soldier on knowing that it will reduce after that really quickly!

K&P lovely blanket! It's so amazing to see them come together.

MalcolmTuckersOmniShambles · 17/03/2017 21:35

Not quite ALL the colours, Drop, no. I haven't got the verboten Bright Pink or Bright Green, or Dark Brown, Royal, Lemon...I think that's it! Oh and the multi-coloured ones. Part of me does want to make it up to the full collection though, just so I've got it, even if I don't use those particular colours!

I promise you all, there is no secret WIP stash, I've just wound the balls up really neatly and put the paper band back on. There are several balls nearly at the end!

I do, however, have a secret Debbie Bliss/Sublime/Jenny Watson/Drops stash though...Blush!

Mhw02 · 17/03/2017 23:13

My work thus far... Note the mountain of peskies still to be sewn in! (I always resolve to see them in as I go along, bit I never actually do.)

Welcome to our Chernobyl project for 2017
Mhw02 · 17/03/2017 23:14

Sew and but. Not see and bit.
