Welcome to our Chernobyl project for 2017!! So glad to have you on board!

For the last three years we have been making warm, comforting Little Hugs for Belarusian teenagers and children visiting the UK for recuperative holidays during the summer with the fabulous charity the Chernobyl Children's Project and Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline. Photos from the Leeds group can be seen here.. and our finished blankets from last year here…

Each year these marvellous charities bring children who live in the most contaminated area near the Chernobyl reactor over to the UK. In summer, when the dust causes radiation levels to rise, it becomes even more important for as many children as possible to leave their contaminated homeland for a few weeks of fresh air and clean food. The rates of childhood cancer are very high, the most common cancers being thyroid and leukemia. Coming to the UK for a four week break increases their immunity against the awful disease by up to 3 years when they return home. Often these children are in remission. Sadly though there is a high chance of these children falling ill again. They all suffer living in such difficult conditions and with very little.

Last year 36 children, teens and their interpreters went home with a beautiful Woolly Hug. This year we are keen to help even more groups, so Liverpool, Gloucester/Leeds (same Leeds group but this year spending 2 weeks at each location) Portsmouth and Helpston,Northampton.

That is about 70+ blankets!! Shock Wine

With your help we know we can do this

Please do join us, here’s how..

Crafting Information

  • We would like 12" squares in bright and cheery Stylecraft Special DK colours.
  • PLEASE AVOID USING black, bright green, bright pink, browns, greys, citron, sunshine, fiesta, jaffa and any pale pastels, white or cream for practical reasons. This will help squares fit together more easily.
  • Make squares in a neutral colour theme, or more specifically for a boy or girl. As much as we don’t like to think of colour as being gender specific, these children may.
  • We will be happy to accept 6" squares if making a 12" one feels too much.
  • Crochet or knitted, 4mm hook or needles. Single colour, mixed colour, simple, complex. No blocking and please sew in pesky ends.
  • If needed, we can supply yarn. Let us know if we can send to you.
  • Posting of squares please to the South Coast address, PM if you need it. Star

If you think you’d like to make a whole blanket that is WONDERFUL, but please contact us first. We will be asking for gender neutral blankets which are 48 inches by 60m, but would just like to chat to you first, thank you!

Supporting with funds
If anyone would like to donate funds to support this, we would be so grateful. Please PM us for the donation info. Thank you xx

Can anyone help with extras?
There are a few extras which we will be collecting too alongside squares, items which really help, if you would like to add in any of these we would love to receive them for the children, thank you, bless you.

Underwear aged 10 plus. New only

  • Adult size socks (one size fits all) new
  • Toothbrushes, single packed please
  • Hairbrushes
  • Toiletries, toothpaste, shower gel, shampoo etc, but not bars of soap please.
  • Sanitary Towels
  • Plasters
  • Vitamins, please check suitable for 10 years+
  • Any little luxuries that teens might love, eg hair clips, make up bits, stickers etc.

If you would like to add 50p in when you post squares for ice creams that would be so kind, we will split any money we receive between the groups.

Last posting of squares (plus whole blankets) and any extras is Saturday 8th April

No later please as we have to get on and sort at the end of that following week. Thank you. The rush will be on as the first group, Portsmouth arrive in May.

What a big ask! Good grief!

But the fabulous Woolly Hug crew never fail to amaze, last year was an astonishing team effort, as the photo shows, we know that together we can do this.

On behalf of these children and their families, a huge THANK YOU.
Actually, thank you doesn't really come close.

Us xxx

LEM, my husband would call that a short bike ride too.
It'll be 10 years in August since I last rode my bike. I remember that exactly because I fell off and banged my knee up and was in agony limping the following day when I went to visit my friend and her newborn daughter.

TheoriginalLEM · 16/03/2017 21:34

ahh Madisson my dp is now feeling sorry for himself in the bath and definitely not thinking it was a shirt ride any more.

can't even manage to crochet this evening so loving keeping up with everyone's squares. Need my wooly hug fix Grin

TheoriginalLEM · 16/03/2017 21:37

Malcom i am struggling to say which one of your fabulous squares is my favourite. I just love your colour combinations , that is something I really struggle with

NormansNipple · 16/03/2017 21:54

Spindelina I get the warm and fuzzies too. I was going through a really rough time in January and February and reviving my rusty crochet skills and learning new techniques has given me a positive focus. Plus, it's great to chat on here and share photos of what we're doing.

NormansNipple · 16/03/2017 21:57

Woolly your blanket has been posted on FB. It looks lovely!

Evening! well, I managed another plain c2c in claret today, but once again, its come up small - will do a border in saffron round the outside I suppose. The random bits of colour square I needed to finish this morning is done too.
did I read that aright? 37 miles Shock you fit soul! Grin
This is a truly lovely thing we are all doing together- I too had not done crochet for years and years, and never anything like this . I am in awe of all the gorgeous ones , while I plod on with simple stuff .
Thanks by the way - cough not too bad .

TheWoollybacksWife · 16/03/2017 23:15

How much smaller book? The construction crew are excellent at wrangling reluctant squares into submission. Plain and simple squares are essential to all Woolly Hugs projects - the magic is how it all fits together in the final product.

bookbook · 16/03/2017 23:24

Its a tweak bigger than 11" - if i smooth it, its nearly 11.5. I am cross with myself, as it happened last time

I did think to do some plain - I have decided to do at least one square in each colour I still have enough of - saffron and turquoise, and then I will mix and match after that . ( The Jan Eaton book turned up for me at the library at last!)
I'm most disappointed with the grape - everything I have put it with turns into plasticine grey/purple

TheWoollybacksWife · 16/03/2017 23:29

I'm using Grape. It looks lovely near Lime and Pale Rose. I'll add a picture but it may not be brilliant because of artificial light.

The next one is between Violet and Plum.

That is where I am going wrong then - my colour choice has been a bit iffy! I will see if I can get some more colours next time I am out :)

Joolly2 · 17/03/2017 00:11

I am going to have to take a break for a while and let my poor stiff fingers recover. I will try and post my offerings off tomorrow.

Spindelina · 17/03/2017 07:09

Wow, Joolly! How many squares is that?

I'm aiming for a total of ten 12" by the deadline (so far five sent, two in progress, and three in planning). I think that's half a blanket's worth.

SoupDragon · 17/03/2017 07:17

bookbook try pretend blocking your square - pin it out on the carpet and see if it stretches out to 12". Don't actually block it though :)

When I get squares in a construction kit, I steam block them and most stretch nicely to size. From past experience, I reckon an 11" one would be fine.

DropZoneOne · 17/03/2017 07:47

Joolly wow, that's a lot of squares! Are they all 12"?

I'm finding the 12" hard going. Ive completed one, almost finished another one and have two that are half way. Marathon session this weekend coming up!

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 17/03/2017 07:59

Spindelina 😊🎉💐

DropZone. Depends what you have already...but you can't go wrong with Red & Yellow & Pink & Green, Purple & Orange & Blue...😁 I find having plenty on hand helps enormously to chose great colour combinations and you have a way to go to fill the equivalent of the garage let alone any other space...I am chippingIn, I am an Enabler 😂 But if your'e being all sensible then Saffron & Spice & Tomato go well for a firey square, midnight looks great (but no good for Candy squares, only C2017). Most of the blues look good with it.

bookbook. As I got a bit neater the number of squares I needed for a CTT went from 9 to 11, the last one was 12 (the yarn felt a bit thinner). But I have found the measurement at the half way point is quite accurate. Both of your squares look great! My Grape arrived last night, I mostly wanted it for the Kinship Hugs, but I'll have a look and see what else more vibrant it goes with, although the Vintage 'Set' would be nice on a calmer C2017 blanket.

LEM. How are you both feeling this morning?

Joolly. OMG haven't you been busy! They all look so uniform too, great stuff! 🍾🥂 (bookbook I'm guessing 31)

KnottyAndPistey · 17/03/2017 08:03

How's yer arse LEM?

Morning all!!

Joolly2 · 17/03/2017 08:25

My squares are only 6" I'm afraid. I don't have the attention span to do 12". They are also plain colours as I only know how to do one stitch!

bookbook · 17/03/2017 08:49

Morning!
Thanks Woolly and Soup - I was trying to make it easy for the construction crew! I will try not to fret :)
LEM - hope you are not too stiff today - thats always when I regret doing too much....usually involving careful rolling out of bed due to locked up back...
Chipping mmmm 28 I think!- definitely round the 30 mark
The 12" onea are odd, now I am doing crotchet - with knitting, I know exactly how long it will take. With granny squares each row takes longer , then with c2c it suddenly gets quicker, once you are half way , and for me, anything with a pattern takes forever as I pore over the instructions Grin

MadisonAvenue · 17/03/2017 08:54

Good morning! Just back from a long dog walk, bit of shopping to do next and then I'll be back to pick up where I left off with a square at stupid o'clock last night. Teenager in bed as no college today so I'm bound to come home to the Red Card Of Doom.

Joolly - you've been very busy! They look great Grin

MalcolmTuckersOmniShambles · 17/03/2017 09:11

Ooh Norman, I LOVE the Moorland blanket! It's exactly my sort of colours. I am so tempted to crochet one for myself once I've finished all my other squares and projects in about a million years!

Today I am sorting out my yarn pegs, having got out my stash yesterday from various nooks and crannies - I had no idea I had so much Blush. I've got a fair few duplicates of the colours I use a lot, so I figured yarn pegs will help me to keep it organised.

I may open Malcolm's Yarn Support Group For The Seriously Addicted...

MadisonAvenue · 17/03/2017 09:15

Where do I sign up Malc?

bookbook · 17/03/2017 09:22

I can see this is why I am not good at colour choosing. I haven't been buying every colour! The 3 places I go to buy it all have limited, overlapping colours.

Marcipex · 17/03/2017 09:28

Sign me up Malc

Also can we have a junior branch for DGD age 4, who has cherished her ball of Pomegranate for two years now, poking it with a crochet hook and very occassionally snipping a little bit off.

Spindelina · 17/03/2017 09:41

Grin We need branches for the whole family. I'm in; my DD will join the junior branch - she has a ball of pomegranate (chunky) and some 6mm needles. I cast on 12 stitches (there are now 13 - no idea where that came from) and she's done about eight rows of garter stitch while sitting in my lap with me guiding the needles a bit and trying not to drop the lot. She's ever so proud of her scarf-to-be.

And I'm sure there's scope for a support group for the DPs. They can sigh and shake their heads in bemusement and get confused about knitting vs. crochet together.
