Welcome to our Chernobyl project for 2017!! So glad to have you on board!

For the last three years we have been making warm, comforting Little Hugs for Belarusian teenagers and children visiting the UK for recuperative holidays during the summer with the fabulous charity the Chernobyl Children's Project and Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline. Photos from the Leeds group can be seen here.. and our finished blankets from last year here…

Each year these marvellous charities bring children who live in the most contaminated area near the Chernobyl reactor over to the UK. In summer, when the dust causes radiation levels to rise, it becomes even more important for as many children as possible to leave their contaminated homeland for a few weeks of fresh air and clean food. The rates of childhood cancer are very high, the most common cancers being thyroid and leukemia. Coming to the UK for a four week break increases their immunity against the awful disease by up to 3 years when they return home. Often these children are in remission. Sadly though there is a high chance of these children falling ill again. They all suffer living in such difficult conditions and with very little.

Last year 36 children, teens and their interpreters went home with a beautiful Woolly Hug. This year we are keen to help even more groups, so Liverpool, Gloucester/Leeds (same Leeds group but this year spending 2 weeks at each location) Portsmouth and Helpston,Northampton.

That is about 70+ blankets!! Shock Wine

With your help we know we can do this

Wine

Please do join us, here’s how..

Crafting Information

  • We would like 12" squares in bright and cheery Stylecraft Special DK colours.
  • PLEASE AVOID USING black, bright green, bright pink, browns, greys, citron, sunshine, fiesta, jaffa and any pale pastels, white or cream for practical reasons. This will help squares fit together more easily.
  • Make squares in a neutral colour theme, or more specifically for a boy or girl. As much as we don’t like to think of colour as being gender specific, these children may.
  • We will be happy to accept 6" squares if making a 12" one feels too much.
  • Crochet or knitted, 4mm hook or needles. Single colour, mixed colour, simple, complex. No blocking and please sew in pesky ends.
  • If needed, we can supply yarn. Let us know if we can send to you.
  • Posting of squares please to the South Coast address, PM if you need it. Star

If you think you’d like to make a whole blanket that is WONDERFUL, but please contact us first. We will be asking for gender neutral blankets which are 48 inches by 60m, but would just like to chat to you first, thank you!

Supporting with funds
If anyone would like to donate funds to support this, we would be so grateful. Please PM us for the donation info. Thank you xx

Can anyone help with extras?
There are a few extras which we will be collecting too alongside squares, items which really help, if you would like to add in any of these we would love to receive them for the children, thank you, bless you.

Underwear aged 10 plus. New only

  • Adult size socks (one size fits all) new
  • Toothbrushes, single packed please
  • Hairbrushes
  • Toiletries, toothpaste, shower gel, shampoo etc, but not bars of soap please.
  • Sanitary Towels
  • Plasters
  • Vitamins, please check suitable for 10 years+
  • Any little luxuries that teens might love, eg hair clips, make up bits, stickers etc.

If you would like to add 50p in when you post squares for ice creams that would be so kind, we will split any money we receive between the groups.

Last posting of squares (plus whole blankets) and any extras is Saturday 8th April

No later please as we have to get on and sort at the end of that following week. Thank you. The rush will be on as the first group, Portsmouth arrive in May.

What a big ask! Good grief!

But the fabulous Woolly Hug crew never fail to amaze, last year was an astonishing team effort, as the photo shows, we know that together we can do this.

On behalf of these children and their families, a huge THANK YOU.
Actually, thank you doesn't really come close.

Us xxx

Evening!
Malcolm - 5 DC's - no wonder your toy cupboard needs a tidy Grin. I have 1 DGS, and his toys take up half of my living room - I could swear he has more than my two DD's had when they were little... :)
my stash is mostly Sirdar snuggly - (particularly baby bamboo ) . Up until recently , baby/toddler stuff is what I mostly have been knitting :)

DropZoneOne · 17/03/2017 23:22

Wow Mhw02 that is a mountain of crochet!

TheWoollybacksWife · 17/03/2017 23:22

I sewed in all my peskies so far last night and I picked up my parcel from the sorting office this morning. Despite having a free day I have so far done precisely 3 and a half rows. My cro-jo just isn't happening today Sad

bookbook · 17/03/2017 23:32

Wow Mhw02 - thats an impressive pile.
I am managing to keep my promise of sewing in peskies when I finish the square - I don't think I could bear a pile to do .
Woolly - no point in forcing it , if you are like me, you will only go wrong.
I have managed 1 full granny square in turquoise and denim , and started a simplish one out of the Jan Eaton book in saffron/claret and sage - still learning to read a pattern, not watch :)

Mhw 😳 Wow. Just, wow 🍾🎉💐. K&P will be super thrilled to see that photo! 2 completed bkankets (or is that 3?!) and what looks to be about enough squares for another blanket! That'll ease a bit if the stress at C2017HQ.

Malcolm. Wouldn't it be fun 😊
My 'other' stash has finally been whittled down. I was pretty good about not buying wool until I used up most of the DB CM we used to use. My resolve was helped by the fact I hate choosing new wool online and I can't get the wool we use now locally . 🤣 I only have a small stash of non WH wool if we don't include wool in storage overseas, let's not go there

Drop. Aster isn't any good for CH's, so if you want a blue that's good for both, personally, I'd go for Empire, but if you're not bothered then the Aster is lovely. Well done with persisting with the 12" CTC. I had good intentions but I was bored witless by 6" so stopped Blush. Though I've done 6 of them so far...lol. I will probably hook 4 of them together to make it a little less work for the construction crew.

Mhw02 · 18/03/2017 08:59

Chipping There are two completed blankets, all the squares for the third ready to be joined and half the squares done for a fourth.

Didn't plan properly so keep going into the local wool shop and buying one ball at a time!

Spindelina · 18/03/2017 10:06

Star Mhw Star

Chipping is your overseas stash anywhere we might want to go for the woolly retreat? Just to check it out, y'know?!

DropZoneOne · 18/03/2017 10:18

Chipping I have Empire, Turquoise and sherbert already, the first two were my first balls along with Fuchsia and magenta so there are a lot of squares with those colours!

Finished the 12" C2C - just peskies to sew in - and almost finished the granny. I think my tension is getting tighter though as this is 12 rounds but only 10"

For those of you on pinterest and looking for colour matching inspiration, if you search 'kinship' it comes up with loads of palettes from the kinship project - the yarn all matched up on little pegs (I found it by accident looking for decorating ideas!) Be warned though, it will probably make you need more yarn! They are seriously beautiful.

MadisonAvenue · 18/03/2017 11:56

Still waiting for my delivery of Chernobyl yarn so I'm working on Candy squares

You're a star Mhw

bookbook · 18/03/2017 13:33

you and me both Madison -, I ordered it yesterday afternoon....it should be here by now......Grin
I am using up bits of colours,I am not loving the combination, so will be off to Candys too shortly

NormansNipple · 18/03/2017 18:01

ChippingIn it's my birthday next month and I've put 2 cosy stripe packs on my wish list. I suppose if it gets too onerous I can always pass it to Woolly, she will probably have it done over a weekend Grin

Mhw that's a wonderful pile! I feel for you and all those peskies FlowersCake

DropZone I love your c2c Smile What colours did you use? I'm just learning how to do them. I started my second one yesterday.

I wonder if MNHQ would give us a peskie emoji....

TheoriginalLEM · 18/03/2017 18:55

another c2c. been working today so just catching up on thread

MrsDilligaf · 18/03/2017 19:14

I've been bitten by the crochet bug. I can only do Granny squares at the minute but have done 2 6" squares and have just about finished a 12" square. K & P kindly sent me some wool and I've nearly run out so I've just ordered a stash Blush

I am going to sit and learn a new technique once I've finished the big square!

AmethystRaven · 18/03/2017 19:22

I am now in possession of a crochet hook and lots of new colours. I sense I may be about to fall down a rabbit hole... Grin

TheWoollybacksWife · 18/03/2017 20:07

My ears were burning Blush Norman. All the best people have April birthdays Wink

Welcome to the dark side MrsD and Amethyst.

I appear to have accidentally consumed a very large glass of wine. I had a bit of a grumpy moment with DH this afternoon and as a result felt the need for Wine and Chocolate. Any crochet fine from this point on may need frogging tomorrow. Blush

TheWoollybacksWife · 18/03/2017 20:10

Lovely colours LEM. I am pants at colour choices and I am in awe of you clever folk who can mix and match.

bookbook · 18/03/2017 20:31

Gosh LEM - would you mind if I steal that idea?
I have just finished a 12".in saffron and claret , with a little bit of sage . Here is yesterdays, and todays .
I am fast running out of wool -with any sort of matching colours , so will chop to Candys whilst I await delivery .
They are up to 11 blankets on fb !

Welcome to our Chernobyl project for 2017
NormansNipple · 18/03/2017 20:39

LEM that's lovely. I love the blues.

MrsD I can highly recommend the Bella Coco corner to corner tutorial. It's really easy to follow and pick up.

Amethyst yes. Your life will now revolve around crochet!

Woolly don't worry about the wine. I'm not such a big drinker but I have eaten a whole box of mini battenburgs this evening Blush It's good though, all the sugar is making me crochet faster. I've nearly finished my second square. I'm using up my odds of pinks and purples and then I have planned a rainbow square Smile

DropZoneOne · 18/03/2017 21:05

Norman thank you, it's saffron, spice and tomato, a popular combination.

Amethyst I did find a load of colours on pinterest and had to be very restrained!

LEM and book they look great

MrsD welcome! I only started crochet about a month ago, it's so easy to pick up. If you can do trebles, try a solid granny for a different look or corner to corner - Bella Coco videos for both are great. The "honey and roses" on Little Tin Bird was another early pattern for me - it's pictures rather than video but step by step and introduces written terms so you can start to learn to follow a pattern.

Finally finished this one, double crochet on a 12" takes a LONG time. I won't be making that mistake again!
