Welcome to our Chernobyl project for 2016!! So glad to have you on board! Thanks

For the last two years we have been making warm, comforting Little Hugs for Belarusian teenagers visiting the Leeds area for recuperative holidays during the summer with the fabulous charity the Chernobyl Children's Project. Photos from previous projects are here...

Each year these marvellous folk bring children who live in the most contaminated area near the Chernobyl reactor over to the UK. In summer, when the dust causes radiation levels to rise, it becomes even more important for as many children as possible to leave their contaminated homeland for a few weeks of fresh air and clean food. The rates of childhood cancer are at 75%; the most common cancers being thyroid and leukaemia. Coming to the UK for a four week break increases their immunity against the awful disease by up to 3 years when they return home.

This year the group in Leeds (organised by an amazing MNer) are again bringing older children/teens over who have had cancer and are now in remission. Sadly though there is a high chance of these children falling ill again. They all suffer living in such difficult conditions and with very little.

But we always want to do more, and through fellow Mumsnetters we have been in contact with two further groups. These are based in Billericay and Portsmouth, and support slightly younger children, and run by the Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline. In essence they do the same wonderful work in bringing children over for respite from the shocking conditions.

How perfect it would be to make them each a Little Hug.
So that’s 36 blankets! Grin Star Star Wine

With your help we know we can do this

Please do join us, here’s how..

Crafting Information

  • We would like 12" squares in bright and cheery Stylecraft Special DK colours.
  • PLEASE AVOID bright green, bright pink, browns, greys, citron, sunshine, fiesta and jaffa. This will help squares fit together more easily.
  • Make in a non-specific colour theme, for a boy or girl.
  • We will be happy to accept 6" squares if making a 12" one feels too much.
  • Crochet or knitted, 4mm hook or needles. No blocking and please sew in pesky ends.
  • If needed, we can supply yarn. Let us know if we can send to you.
  • If you are thinking about making a whole blanket, please contact us first, thank you x
  • We are aiming for blankets which will be 48 inches by 60 inches.
  • We have started earlier than previously, as the first group (Portsmouth) arrive in May.

Last posting of squares is Monday 11th April.
No later please as we have to get on and sort at the end of that week. Thank you.

Confession time Sad

I have just finished another square and noticed about 4 rows down... I had dropped the end stitch.

I have sewn it in, but will it still be ok?

KnottyAndPistey · 17/03/2016 16:19

If you've hooked the wayward loop and secured it, it will be fine, no worries. xxxx

It's sewn in and secure.
Glad it's still good!

Have finished five 12 inch squares. Can send them tomorrow or wait till April and see if I can get any more done?

MrsHathaway · 18/03/2016 18:39

Today I did a few more inches.

A lady at knitting club very kindly unpicked a wrong for me and explained in detail how I can reduce my tension without losing consistency and therefore speed up by probably 50% Blush

MrsHathaway · 18/03/2016 18:40

... a wrong *row

KnottyAndPistey · 19/03/2016 10:57

Up to you lovely Mhw thank you so much!

She may well be right - until she retired she had a knitting shop - but I can't start trying her method seven inches into a 12" square. She says she's going to get me to do tension squares before I start anything else.

Marcipex · 19/03/2016 17:12

Thats three squares finished.

RattieOfCatan · 20/03/2016 13:24

I have a handful of hats and squares intended for the refugee project that I made before Christmas and forgot to send. Would they be okay to send along with some squares for the Chernobyl project in April?

& What items are more needed on the list? I plan to buy some bits to send too. I keep seeing socks and toothbrushes on the WH FB page so I'm avoiding those but is there anything particularly that's needed? Dried food bits?

inlectorecumbit · 21/03/2016 11:43

Yarn arrived so time to get knitting Grin

KnottyAndPistey · 21/03/2016 12:40

Send it all together, thank you so much xxx

KnottyAndPistey · 21/03/2016 12:41

Dried food bits would be great, vitamins, plasters, sanitary pads, toothpaste all very helpful. Socks and toothbrushes all still very helpful though, thank you xxxx

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 21/03/2016 18:55

I got carried away and started 6 different squares. Then I realised they are to be 12" not 6"...eek! I think one will be ready on time. Grin Sorry about that

I have found an excellent way of using up scrap yarn so I ended making 8 squares instead of 6 Grin

Here they are.
In case anyone feels like making matching squares (plain or otherwise) the colours used are Lipstick, Pomegranate, Copper, Grass Green, Kelly Green, Sage, Sherbert, Lobelia, Plum, Boysenberry, Grape, Clematis & Midnight (sorry, looks black)

Okay, am 99% certain I'll have two completed blankets by the April date, can certainly have them done by the May date. Will aim to have them done for the April date so you can decide if they're appropriate, or would be better suited to another project.

One is the Look At What I Made 2014 CAL blanket - started in August, finished crocheting it about October-ish I think, and now in March I'm finally making headway with sewing in the approximately 1,000 ends! Am just worried it's a wee bit big! The other is a giant granny stripe in a, ahem, rather eclectic combination of colours!
