Welcome to our Chernobyl project for 2016!! So glad to have you on board! Thanks

For the last two years we have been making warm, comforting Little Hugs for Belarusian teenagers visiting the Leeds area for recuperative holidays during the summer with the fabulous charity the Chernobyl Children's Project. Photos from previous projects are here...

Each year these marvellous folk bring children who live in the most contaminated area near the Chernobyl reactor over to the UK. In summer, when the dust causes radiation levels to rise, it becomes even more important for as many children as possible to leave their contaminated homeland for a few weeks of fresh air and clean food. The rates of childhood cancer are at 75%; the most common cancers being thyroid and leukaemia. Coming to the UK for a four week break increases their immunity against the awful disease by up to 3 years when they return home.

This year the group in Leeds (organised by an amazing MNer) are again bringing older children/teens over who have had cancer and are now in remission. Sadly though there is a high chance of these children falling ill again. They all suffer living in such difficult conditions and with very little.

But we always want to do more, and through fellow Mumsnetters we have been in contact with two further groups. These are based in Billericay and Portsmouth, and support slightly younger children, and run by the Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline. In essence they do the same wonderful work in bringing children over for respite from the shocking conditions.

How perfect it would be to make them each a Little Hug.
So that’s 36 blankets! Grin Star Star Wine

With your help we know we can do this

Please do join us, here’s how..

Crafting Information

  • We would like 12" squares in bright and cheery Stylecraft Special DK colours.
  • PLEASE AVOID bright green, bright pink, browns, greys, citron, sunshine, fiesta and jaffa. This will help squares fit together more easily.
  • Make in a non-specific colour theme, for a boy or girl.
  • We will be happy to accept 6" squares if making a 12" one feels too much.
  • Crochet or knitted, 4mm hook or needles. No blocking and please sew in pesky ends.
  • If needed, we can supply yarn. Let us know if we can send to you.
  • If you are thinking about making a whole blanket, please contact us first, thank you x
  • We are aiming for blankets which will be 48 inches by 60 inches.
  • We have started earlier than previously, as the first group (Portsmouth) arrive in May.

Last posting of squares is Monday 11th April.
No later please as we have to get on and sort at the end of that week. Thank you.

you know that amazing rainbow blanket that is at the top of one of your links? The one that is slightly zig zag?

Is that knit or crochet, and how do you do it?
And, for the sake of a blanket, how do you give it a square edge?

My knotting is a bit rusty, but I used to do quite a bit, so should be able to do it!

Chippednailvarnish · 05/03/2016 12:45

Probably a stupid question, but how many stitches should I cast on for a 12 inch square? I've seen one guide that said 66...

I'm in! I'll try and order wool today.

steppemum · 05/03/2016 14:12

that should say my knitting is rusty, hopefully it isn't knotty...

thanks polter, I've just had a look, but it is crochet. I could probably do it with a bit of help starting off, but I find knitting much easier.
Maybe next time to crochet!

PeaceLoveAndJaffaCakes · 05/03/2016 14:32

Whoops! I got a wee ball of Empire for this, and then spent £25 on other wool I don't need but absolutely needed.

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 05/03/2016 19:40

steppe

I've just posted a photo on Baby Rumer's thread of a square I've just made with Lucy's ripple stitch - it is crochet.
I've altered it a bit so two repeats makes the width almost 6".
The squareing off was a bit tricky.
If you want to do the same I can write out the pattern for you. Let me know ❤

steppemum · 05/03/2016 21:33

thanks zing, but I will stick to knitting for this time, I will save polter's link and come back to it though, because I love it.

Chippednailvarnish Our guide is 33 stitches for a 6 inch square, so yes, try 66, knit a few rows and measure

OH so excited - my yarn has arrived!!!

The colours are just lovely, but the balls are very large - gulp - when is the deadline???? Grin

Very pleased because I am off to Holland tomorrow for a few days, and it will be perfect to take a fiddle on the ferry etc.

Just rummaged through my knitting bag which hasn't seen the light of day in quite a while, and I seem to have lots and lots of single needles Hmm
I suspect there are quite a few unfinished teddy scarves floating round my girls bedrooms.

I have a solo 4mm and a solo number 8 of my Granny's which my little needle gadget thing says in the same size, so at least I can make a start!

Any diagonal square knitters? Do you increase a stitch on every row to get a right angle corner, or on every alternate row??

Ta muchly.

rubycon · 09/03/2016 11:24

I cast on 2sts and then increase into the first stitch of every row - up to 40sts for a 6in square and 70sts for a 12in and then to decrease K1 and K into the back of the next 2sts every row until last 3st - K1 K2tog nd then K the sts together and draw the yarn through to finish off!

KnottyAndPistey · 09/03/2016 11:26
