Welcome to our Chernobyl project for 2016!! So glad to have you on board! Thanks

For the last two years we have been making warm, comforting Little Hugs for Belarusian teenagers visiting the Leeds area for recuperative holidays during the summer with the fabulous charity the Chernobyl Children's Project. Photos from previous projects are here...

Each year these marvellous folk bring children who live in the most contaminated area near the Chernobyl reactor over to the UK. In summer, when the dust causes radiation levels to rise, it becomes even more important for as many children as possible to leave their contaminated homeland for a few weeks of fresh air and clean food. The rates of childhood cancer are at 75%; the most common cancers being thyroid and leukaemia. Coming to the UK for a four week break increases their immunity against the awful disease by up to 3 years when they return home.

This year the group in Leeds (organised by an amazing MNer) are again bringing older children/teens over who have had cancer and are now in remission. Sadly though there is a high chance of these children falling ill again. They all suffer living in such difficult conditions and with very little.

But we always want to do more, and through fellow Mumsnetters we have been in contact with two further groups. These are based in Billericay and Portsmouth, and support slightly younger children, and run by the Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline. In essence they do the same wonderful work in bringing children over for respite from the shocking conditions.

How perfect it would be to make them each a Little Hug.
So that’s 36 blankets! Grin Star Star Wine

With your help we know we can do this

Please do join us, here’s how..

Crafting Information

  • We would like 12" squares in bright and cheery Stylecraft Special DK colours.
  • PLEASE AVOID bright green, bright pink, browns, greys, citron, sunshine, fiesta and jaffa. This will help squares fit together more easily.
  • Make in a non-specific colour theme, for a boy or girl.
  • We will be happy to accept 6" squares if making a 12" one feels too much.
  • Crochet or knitted, 4mm hook or needles. No blocking and please sew in pesky ends.
  • If needed, we can supply yarn. Let us know if we can send to you.
  • If you are thinking about making a whole blanket, please contact us first, thank you x
  • We are aiming for blankets which will be 48 inches by 60 inches.
  • We have started earlier than previously, as the first group (Portsmouth) arrive in May.

Last posting of squares is Monday 11th April.
No later please as we have to get on and sort at the end of that week. Thank you.

Can anyone help with extras?
There are a few extras which we will be collecting too alongside squares, items which really help, if you would like to add in any of these we would love to receive them for the children, thank you, bless you.

What a big ask! Good grief!

But the fabulous Woolly Hug crew never fail to amaze, last year was an astonishing team effort, as the photo shows, we know that together we can do this.

Do you still need young teen boy clothing? I've cleared out DS2's wardrobe...

KnottyAndPistey · 07/06/2016 15:24

Thank you so much for your message Outtogetyou and Soupy we are very happy to take them for you, if they come in time they can go to the Billericay group, but that would be arriving before next weekend to be sure, or we can hang on to them for next year? Already confirmed with Portsmouth for 2017! Grin

Is Hermes the best option for posting a big bag of clothes?

PurpleFrog · 07/06/2016 19:00

It depends how big. I have found Hermes good for the 2-5kg range. Not sure about bigger...

KnottyAndPistey · 08/06/2016 17:14

Afternoon Brew

Soupy - Hermes is good, the bags we sent of 15kg of Chernobyl extras only cost just over a tenner each ( we paid a whole 35p each bag for collection) base price was just under a tenner. They are certainly very good value, and you can track parcels so they feel secure too.

The blankets are just amazing, the children were overwhelmed, and I was as well. Thankyou all so much x

MyUsernameDoesntHaveNumbers · 26/07/2016 13:40

I realise that I am terribly late to this but are you still accepting donations? I wasn't in a position to give previously but am able to now and would like to do something to help.

ilove · 26/07/2016 13:46

The children are here until August 20th, and we have such a list of stuff that they need to have bought for them - one of the girls her toes are over the end of her shoes, and they've arrived with tiny backpacks of stuff for 4 weeks.

It's so kind of you to offer - I believe the lovely Knotty and Pistey are still happy to be go between, and they have my details, if you mark that it's for me...

Thankyou Flowers

MyUsernameDoesntHaveNumbers · 26/07/2016 14:08

Oh you people. SUCH lovely things and thoughts. Now I've just seen this for the first time and I'm crying.

It must make a difference and I'm so glad.

ilove · 26/07/2016 14:18

Thankyou so much, they do eat us out of everything, yes, haha

Violet, it makes a MASSIVE difference to them, 4 week here increases their immunity against cancer by up to 3 years when they go home

KnottyAndPistey · 01/08/2016 18:54

Ice cream ahoy!

Enjoying a treat on us, thank you again for all the 50ps with squares and donations, the children visiting Leeds are having a wonderful time. Xx

"Such a lovely day today. The faces of the children who have never seen the sea before will stay with me forever. Watching them play, run, splash, just fantastic.

Fish and chips have never been eaten so quickly, and the fab old fashioned ice-cream parlour who closed to the public until we were ready to leave - without us even having to ask.

The risk assessments for a day like today are not easy, but thanks to tetleys coaches amd the garforth lions, and to my amazing host families, it's been wonderful. And of course to the fantastic woolly hugs crew, who donated the much needed ice-cream funds. They thoroughly enjoyed every last bit.

Thank you. All of you."
