Welcome to our Chernobyl project for 2016!! So glad to have you on board! Thanks

For the last two years we have been making warm, comforting Little Hugs for Belarusian teenagers visiting the Leeds area for recuperative holidays during the summer with the fabulous charity the Chernobyl Children's Project. Photos from previous projects are here...

Each year these marvellous folk bring children who live in the most contaminated area near the Chernobyl reactor over to the UK. In summer, when the dust causes radiation levels to rise, it becomes even more important for as many children as possible to leave their contaminated homeland for a few weeks of fresh air and clean food. The rates of childhood cancer are at 75%; the most common cancers being thyroid and leukaemia. Coming to the UK for a four week break increases their immunity against the awful disease by up to 3 years when they return home.

This year the group in Leeds (organised by an amazing MNer) are again bringing older children/teens over who have had cancer and are now in remission. Sadly though there is a high chance of these children falling ill again. They all suffer living in such difficult conditions and with very little.

But we always want to do more, and through fellow Mumsnetters we have been in contact with two further groups. These are based in Billericay and Portsmouth, and support slightly younger children, and run by the Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline. In essence they do the same wonderful work in bringing children over for respite from the shocking conditions.

How perfect it would be to make them each a Little Hug.
So that’s 36 blankets! Grin Star Star Wine

With your help we know we can do this

Please do join us, here’s how..

Crafting Information

  • We would like 12" squares in bright and cheery Stylecraft Special DK colours.
  • PLEASE AVOID bright green, bright pink, browns, greys, citron, sunshine, fiesta and jaffa. This will help squares fit together more easily.
  • Make in a non-specific colour theme, for a boy or girl.
  • We will be happy to accept 6" squares if making a 12" one feels too much.
  • Crochet or knitted, 4mm hook or needles. No blocking and please sew in pesky ends.
  • If needed, we can supply yarn. Let us know if we can send to you.
  • If you are thinking about making a whole blanket, please contact us first, thank you x
  • We are aiming for blankets which will be 48 inches by 60 inches.
  • We have started earlier than previously, as the first group (Portsmouth) arrive in May.

Last posting of squares is Monday 11th April.
No later please as we have to get on and sort at the end of that week. Thank you.

Thanks Thanks Thanks Thanks Thanks

But the fabulous Woolly Hug crew never fail to amaze, last year was an astonishing team effort, as the photo shows, we know that together we can do this.

If it helps anybody, that was 66 stitches and 84 rows.

I cast on 93 for k3p3 rib and it's resting on the needles at about 8" Hmm I know rib bunches but that's so different!!

Halfway ish. About forty rows I think, ::counts stripes:: so that must be similar.

WhyCantIuseTheNameIWant · 13/03/2016 09:17

The ribs can be pulled out a bit to fit, as the squares a sewn together.

Rows should be the same!

steppemum · 13/03/2016 22:37

good evening,
I knitted all the way to Holland and all the way back. Dh is giving me the rolled eye treatment Grin

but I have a little question. I knitted on the diagonal, so should be an easy accurate measure right? So got to the half way point, the sides measured 12".

Now it is finished it only measures 11" maybe 11.5" Hmm Is it usable?

It is very nice Smile

second square started, not diagonal this time, I cast on 66 and I've knitted about 3" and it seems to be the right size.

KnottyAndPistey · 14/03/2016 09:14

As long as it gently stretches to 12, and it will steppe it is all good, we'd much rather they were a bit under than over, so perfect, thank you xxx

Whycant - that's lovely, thank you

Morning all Brew :)

I've bought some wool in Shrimp and turquoise and knitted 1 square so far. I'm not the world's best knitter though so there are a couple of extra stitches picked up by mistake etc. I'm not sure how many I can get done as I'm quite slow, but will send on what I have by April 11th. I also saw a lady knitting what looked like a 12" square while waiting for swimming lessons yesterday and wondered whether she was a secret woolly hug knitter!

PurpleFrog · 15/03/2016 13:57

I've done 4 squares so far. (Well, when I say done, I mean crocheted. The peskies will be dealt with at a later date, probably the day after before the deadline!)

I have a number of bars of soap that are surplus to requirements. (Decent soap like Imperial Leather etc..) Would that be OK to send? Or are you looking more for shower gel, toothpaste, deodorant etc.?

WhyCantIuseTheNameIWant · 15/03/2016 22:25

Could we have an updated list of extras please?

Do you have enough of one thing? A deficit of anything specific yet?

Or are all the items still needed?

Marcipex · 15/03/2016 22:34

Ive got Tomato, it's not actually like a tomato, it's like tomato soup.
Hope you like it...
Or I've got grass green ( I think) if that's okay. It's not like grass, it's like lemon/lime jellybelly beans. If that's any good.
