There will need to be a quick turnaround on this but we know hope we can do it!

We have been approached and asked if we can make Little Hugs for a group of teenagers coming over to Leeds for a recuperative holiday in the summer with the fabulous charity the Chernobyl Children's Project.

Each year these marvellous folk bring children over from Belarus who live in the most contaminated area near the Chernobyl reactor. It is in the summer, when the dust causes radiation levels to rise, that it becomes even more important for as many children as possible to leave their contaminated homeland for a few weeks of fresh air and clean food. The rates of childhood cancer are at 75%, the most common cancers being thyroid and leukaemia. Coming to the UK for a four week break increases their immunity against the awful disease by up to 3 years when they return home.

This year the group in Leeds (organised by an amazing Mumsnetter) are bringing twelve children who have had cancer and are now in remission. Sadly though there is a high chance of these children falling ill again. This summer there are four boys and eight girls coming, aged between 11 and 14. They all suffer living in such difficult conditions and with very little. How perfect it would be to make them each a Little Hug.

Here's how to help with this project.....

  • We would like 12” squares in bright and cheery Stylecraft Special DK colours, but please AVOID bright green, bright pink, browns, greys, citron, fiesta and jaffa. This will help squares fit together more easily. Make for a boy, girl or in a non specific colour theme. We will be happy to accept 6” squares if making a 12” one feels too much.

  • Crochet or knitted, 4mm hook or needles. No blocking and please sew in pesky ends.

  • We can supply all yarn for this. Let us know if we can send to you.

  • Our last posting is Saturday 14th June, so we have a fighting chance of getting the blankets ready to go to the children on their arrival in the UK.

  • If anyone would like to donated funds to support this, we would be so grateful. Our paypal is [email protected], cheques and cash are very welcome too, just PM for the address to send.

ThanksThanksThanksThanks

We know together we can do this in time! On behalf of these children, a huge THANK YOU.

Pistey and Knotty X

Thanks

pistey don't worry there will be plenty of blankets to come, I sent her an attic24 selection, so she's got 2kg of wool to work her way through Grin

I think she's knitting an order for someone at the moment but I'll call her tonight and see if she can rustle up a 48" hug (or bigger) for this one.

mejon · 09/05/2014 18:32

droitwichmummy · 09/05/2014 18:47

I have some time for this - are you looking for plain squares? Will need some wool though, I'm out of Stylecraft

Kazren25 · 09/05/2014 18:51

I'd be happy to help but would like some wool please. Have some blankets ready to send so could put square in with them xx

I'd like to try and help.

I've done 6' for the blankets in the past. I think I can get to 12' though.

I'll buy my own wool.

MNPinto2014 · 09/05/2014 18:53

Hooker reporting in, have wool and will add to the list, can squares be of different colours or just a solid colour?

fanjodisfunction · 09/05/2014 19:02

Oh we do knotty!

RiaOverTheRainbow · 09/05/2014 19:21

Signing in :)

Are babette style squares ok or would single squares be better?

Mhw02 · 09/05/2014 19:27

Should be able to manage this, am a bit too busy to make any this month, but starting in June still gives me a fortnight and I'm sure I can manage some in that time!

Tarlia · 09/05/2014 19:27

I'm in. What a lovely cause, one I've not heard of before. It'll be my first contribution to a MN hug, though we recently made one as a postnatal bus.
I'm not sure how many squares I can contribute yet, but put me down for two and any more will be a bonus, sound ok? Not totally sure how it all works! I've got some stylecraft..

Who do I message to get the sending address? :)

KnottyLocks · 09/05/2014 19:28

Babettes, single colours, stripes, motifs, joined set of four....

Fill yer boots, lovely people Smile

AnathemaDevice · 09/05/2014 19:29

I'll give it a go, I've got the Attic24 pack which seems to be never ending! I'll send it with my squares for cathpip.

Tarlia · 09/05/2014 19:38

I should also say, I'm a crocheter :)

KnottyLocks · 09/05/2014 19:40

Tarlia, PM Pistey (RatherBeOnThePiste) thank you

KnottyLocks · 09/05/2014 19:42

To us, you are a hooker!

GTbaby · 09/05/2014 19:54

I'd like to make a square. I can send this and cathpips at same time.

TheWoollybacksWife · 09/05/2014 20:00

I'm in. My (adopted) home town has hosted children from Chernobyl in the past. It is a fabulous cause.

I know I have Meadow and Emperor - I might have some Cloud Blue, Fondant and Matador BUT I could support my local yarn shop and get another ball or three Grin

pettyprudence · 09/05/2014 20:52

I'm going to try and join in on this one - I'm a hooker and will supply my own wool.

I went to Brest in Belarus twice as a teenager on a youth exchange project and visited some areas and met people affected by the Chernobyl disaster including a helicopter pilot who was one of the first on scene. The fall out from Chernobyl just gets worse and worse for each generation. The treatment in Belarus of children and adults affected by Chernobyl is shockingly poor :(

pettyprudence · 09/05/2014 21:04

also what does "no blocking mean"?
