There will need to be a quick turnaround on this but we know hope we can do it!

We have been approached and asked if we can make Little Hugs for a group of teenagers coming over to Leeds for a recuperative holiday in the summer with the fabulous charity the Chernobyl Children's Project.

Each year these marvellous folk bring children over from Belarus who live in the most contaminated area near the Chernobyl reactor. It is in the summer, when the dust causes radiation levels to rise, that it becomes even more important for as many children as possible to leave their contaminated homeland for a few weeks of fresh air and clean food. The rates of childhood cancer are at 75%, the most common cancers being thyroid and leukaemia. Coming to the UK for a four week break increases their immunity against the awful disease by up to 3 years when they return home.

This year the group in Leeds (organised by an amazing Mumsnetter) are bringing twelve children who have had cancer and are now in remission. Sadly though there is a high chance of these children falling ill again. This summer there are four boys and eight girls coming, aged between 11 and 14. They all suffer living in such difficult conditions and with very little. How perfect it would be to make them each a Little Hug.

Here's how to help with this project.....

  • We would like 12” squares in bright and cheery Stylecraft Special DK colours, but please AVOID bright green, bright pink, browns, greys, citron, fiesta and jaffa. This will help squares fit together more easily. Make for a boy, girl or in a non specific colour theme. We will be happy to accept 6” squares if making a 12” one feels too much.

  • Crochet or knitted, 4mm hook or needles. No blocking and please sew in pesky ends.

  • We can supply all yarn for this. Let us know if we can send to you.

  • Our last posting is Saturday 14th June, so we have a fighting chance of getting the blankets ready to go to the children on their arrival in the UK.

  • If anyone would like to donated funds to support this, we would be so grateful. Our paypal is [email protected], cheques and cash are very welcome too, just PM for the address to send.

ThanksThanksThanksThanks

We know together we can do this in time! On behalf of these children, a huge THANK YOU.

Pistey and Knotty X

Thanks

Wow. You going to manage on the train???

i have a meeting with my local ASDA superstore on Friday at 1230 to see whether they will support/sponsor the residential food and drink...very, very nervous!!!

RatherBeOnThePiste · 16/07/2014 19:45

Oh ilove, huge luck with Asda!

Tis certainly a hooooge bag, but am coming with DD who is very strong and plan to split them into two big wheelie suitcase/bag things. It wil be absolutely fine, and I'm so thrilled to be bringing them that on the day that the bags will feel like they weigh nothing. :)

Really hope Friday goes well. Thanks

We are absolutely delighted to be able to show this glorious collection of twelve beautiful blankets for our Children of Chernobyl project all together!! The most heartfelt thanks to ALL crafters, donors and compilers, just awesome.

At the start this seemed such a huge, sometimes daunting undertaking due to the tight turnaround. We should have known better than to worry!

Woolly Huggers - you are AMAZING! xx

ilove · 18/07/2014 19:55

ilove · 18/07/2014 19:55

TheWoollybacksWife · 18/07/2014 20:00

You need one of them magic MN chickens ilove. You'll get leftovers too.

Seriously, you are doing a marvellous thing.

Dutchoma · 18/07/2014 20:14

Are you having a church hall with kitchen? How much help do you get?

ilove · 18/07/2014 20:16

We have a residential center that sleeps 36 for 2 nights/3 days. I'll have help on the Sunday from one person in the kitchen, and I won't be washing up....I'm the only one with a valid food health and hygiene cert...

KnottyLocks · 19/07/2014 19:04

Blimey, that is some undertaking. You total star.

ilove · 20/07/2014 00:08

Allalonenow · 20/07/2014 16:38

Gosh! That photo of all the blankets is amazing!!

I'm not on Facebook, so can't comment there, but just wanted to say what a joy it has been to be part of this project.

We have a fundraising event tonight, at which I need to stand up and speak in front of 60ish folk. Am out at another event tomorrow night, it is our final meeting on Wednesday at which the parent packs are handed out, I have a house viewing on Thursday night, and currently have 11 living here. Hospital appt for my foot on Thursday morning and on Friday night the children set off...

Mrilove is on nights all week . I have nearly finalised the itinerary and realised I end another coach on August tenth and to find somewhere in Bridlington to do fish and chips for 90 for tuppencehapenny. I am starting to stress and when I stress my alopecia comes back and I start to fall over (unrelated to each other). Argh....

Dutchoma · 21/07/2014 11:55

You have more to cope with than any other human being I know of. I don't know if you are into prayer, but I am and will pray for divine support at all the things you mention.

May God bless you in all you are doing.

ilove · 21/07/2014 12:12

Oma, thankyou so much

I have organised Pistey for her journey to the great North, and arranged for her to be collected at the station and brought here

(just don't tell her I have jobs for her to do...)

Dutchoma · 21/07/2014 12:29

Just heard from Pistey. Another one to pray for Grin

RatherBeOnThePiste · 21/07/2014 14:29
Grin

All booked to go! Just starting to sew our labels on, and check for rogue peskies (on the ones I attached I hasten to add!)

And washing them, always feel the need to, makes them feel absolutely ready to go.

ilove · 24/07/2014 07:05

Visas have been approved - here's hoping they issue them in time and then let the children through at Manchester on Saturday...
